Maybe to a percentage of the hockey population, but I would guess not to most. At least he could have mixed some of the Oilers into the blog....no?
- LeftCoaster

Just google 'Tim Thomas' and see what comes up.

He made this into a huge story.

Ya. I don't think actual hockey fans actually give a crap about it. The NHL is hockey, not federal politics. If the media didn't mention it, we wouldn't have even known probably. Silly to dwell on it.

Actually, I'm old. The fact I understand respect for those who lead demonstrates that. I work with teens and young adults daily in my "real" work, and they have absolutely no sense of loyalty or understanding of the value of tradition. Our society, while I won't say it's crumbling, is moving into a very dark place where loyalty to anyone other than yourself is looked down on. As one of my friends says all the time, "if you don't believe in something, you don't stand for anything."
- Maxbone

I agree bigtime, except that loyalty is reserved for the people I love and people that earn it.Poloticians are looking for a free ride on the working class peoples backs. They do nothing to earn nothing, especially my respect or loyalty

Well you've got a player making a pretty significant political statement... Maybe he should just focus on hockey and his team.

For people who are arguing for him saying that hockey and politics should be kept separate, linking the two is exactly what he did with this stunt. The very reason he did this is for the attention, and know his supporters are pleading to lay off him because the general response didn't go their way?

In life, a person can't just think about themselves all the time. Sometimes, you have to think about the people around you, occasionally tolerating and enduring moments silently. If you show no respect to others, even the people you don't like or appreciate, no one will respect you back.

Words to live by Richard. More people in this world need to realize that we are a part of a bigger picture and sometimes the needs/wants of others have to come before our own. That being said I think Thomas blew a chance to actually say something that would be heard and considered at the White House lunch. He was MVP right? He should have stood up and said something whilst there. Now that would have been news worthy.

Those who want to downplay this are kidding themselves and trying to save their hockey hero from bad press. What he did was larger than hockey. Homerism fans should not confuse "home of the brave" with hockey.

This was a huge mistake.

why the hell would anyone "respect" a hockey player in the first place
on the surface they are collectively a bunch of overpaid knucle dragging dufuses

i save my respect for the individuals that break away from the knuckle dragging mould (see Gretz, A Ference R Regehr G Laraque et al else).

To me the biggest thing about Thomasgate is how his teammates view his actions. Obama, the Republicans and Democrats probably don't give a crap about Tims personal views, but this seems like a snub to the team as much as to the government. If his team truly doesn't care than no one else should either. He is free to make his own choices, even if they make him look like a self centered douche.

I dont care about his beleifs, he can make poltical statements all he wants.

Unfortunately he chose to put himself above his team on this one. Thats the part I dont like about it. Theres a time and place, and this certainly wasnt it. It was a day about the Boston Bruins... now its about Tim Thomas and his views.

The Bruins are the one that dropped the ball. They knew weeks ago Tim wasn't going to go, they could've dealt with this then and it would've been a non-issue. Either that or lied and said his wife wasn't feeling well.

thomas should have gone to show support for his team and organization. period.

all star weekend sucks balls. boring, no one cares, players would rather be suspended without pay, then go play in the all star game...

3 thangs

1st, Timmy can do what every he wants... i think its funny cause he was the only americann on the team, what a badass. He's a super badass for that either that or racist

2nd, IMO Ovy Know's that he's not good enough for the allstar game this year. Look at his stats, then look at RNH or Eberle's!!! Either that or he's pissed that he got suspended

3rd, the trades will pick up. They always start out slow like this
