Funny but the UFA signings are not killing the team.
Ehrhoff has not hurt the team when he has played.
He was playing well before he got hurt.

There is no doubt about it, the Crosby thing was luck, it was a lottery. But the other two examples are not luck. They are quality GM's making quality moves. That identified highly skilled players with compete levels. They made aggressive plays to get them and the results were good.

I agree that during the actual Cup run, there is always luck involved, namely keeping your key guys healthy. However there are good GM's and bad GM's, the Sabres just happened to have a bad guy in charge for 14 years running.

Not saying that he is the only or biggest factor in our recent plunge down the sh!t slide, but he is a difference maker.

Who would pick up his $6.25 million cap hit? He's pretty much untradable based on his play and contract IMO.

So I guess that applies to Chicago as well, Edmonton too? Fact is, more times than not, there is quality player waiting there and not an Alexandre Daigle. Will the player be as good as a Crosby or Malkin, probably not but that doesn't mean they wont be a long term franchise impact player.

The Sabres like the Bills decided for a long time to not actively pursue winning to the best of their abilities, unfortunately they did not actively pursue losing either. What you have is incredible mediocrity that is stuck in time. You have to do one or the other, but you can't sit in the middle and wish upon a lucky star.
