Goalie and shootouts. I totally understand. Goalies are reactionary - no thought required. Goalies teach them selves to be in the right spot at the right time - whether it's body position, glove, etc... Kick saves are timing, etc... Deflections screw up the muscle memory, and generally go in. Shots that are faster than normal (or sometimes slower) tend to go in as well. Goalies protect with the muscle memory ~XX% of the net - Shots that are "upstairs" are out of the protected zone, and generally go in... Goalie practice these saves in real-time. There is something unnatural about a shootout. It throws the timing off and there is too much time to think.

It's similar to... Have you ever wadded up a piece of paper and without thinking - throw it into the trashcan... Then tried it again with aiming and thought - and the paper completely misses the trashcan.

it is disappointing, and really unacceptable given the SO is a reality of today's game no matter how much purists despise and protest it. knowing the flyers have the worst record in nhl history in this category makes it even worse. i love read and simmonds, but i found lava's choices yesterday suspect. with briere and jvr out (jagr doesn't go early) they had less skill to choose from, but still other options were available. and for the love of god, bryz, make a (frank)ing save.

Read and Simmonds has been playing well. And, Lavy was giving them a chance - I respect that. But, both are not known for their stick handling or wicked shots.

My choices...
Giroux - no need to explain why
Cooter - if you're going to have a straight shooter... Cooter had some pretty wirsters into the top corner during his scoring streak. Hard than Simmonds or Read.
Voracek - He's got some moves, but with 5-5 play he can't find the back of the net. Maybe he'd excel without any defenders?
or Schenn, If you're going to try some one new... Schenn played a hell of a game (from what I saw). He should have been rewarded with the chance.

Why not Couturier? He has been hot lately and has good hands. Lava should have gone with Schenn, Cooter, and Giroux. I said it game day and I still fell that way, but it is what it is. Also I can see why they don't practice it. It is a relatively rare occurrence in the season (this season they have gone to the SO in 6.4% of their games...3 times in 47 games) and it doesn't, despite a certain beat writer's misconception, happen at all in the playoffs. Why not focus on PP, PK, breakout drills, board battles, and on ice conditioning, all of which are needed eery game.

Sorry, I was watching the Nova special on the universe... And, thinking about the hugeness of space.

if you look closely, tim, you'll see that the sens have played four more games than the flyers and have six fewer regulation/ot wins. don't expect them to be anywhere near the flyers in the standings by year's end.

also, not sure how any could say putting read out there in the shootout was a suspect decision given who was available to shoot.

Kind of surprised me Bob was not out there for the shootout. He might roof one past Timmy Thomas.

Bryzgalov said this may benefit the shooter more than the goalie because the goalie has to be careful in moving across the crease, side to side, so as to not slip and go “flying” to one side or the other.

He said he doesn’t like the fact he can’t dig his skates into the ice and get some traction going.

This doesn't even make sense. They don't flood the ice when they get ready for the shootout. It is just a dry scrape. How is the ice "too wet"??

what also doesn't make sense is that if the ice is wet, the puck does not slide.

probably a language/panaccio being retarded thing. i get what bryz is saying. the fresher the ice, the less traction the goalies can get (hence why they make shavings in the crease at the start of every period, obviously). even still, every goalie deals with it. make some saves, ilya.

Read's SO attempt went awry but he's got some moves and good hands. He's also scored on a penalty shot this season. Personally, I'd have gone with Couturier as the third shooter.

I was thinking that, with his wrister being "on" of late, that Couturier would be the perfect shooter to start for the Flyers.

watch Devan Dubnyk in last night's shootout against the Sharks. Look at his aggression. That's how I want our goalies to play the shootout. Bryz was a cone.

I found it disturbing that a team's strategy would be to try to take advantage of a players concussion history and target him. And even worse, it sounds like it worked.

hmm....well, NHL teams are slowly moving away from the UBI label to actually identify concussions in an effort to raise awareness, etc. Could (and probably will) in unintended consequences.

And these 1 and 2 game suspensions aren't much of a deterrent either.

Start with 8 games. Imagine if the Caps lost Ovechkin for 1/10 of the season for that head shot the other night...
