Gotta say it does bug me a little. Why make it about politics? It's about sports and your team; what statement does not going make, other than alienating all your Democrat fans? At least Massachusetts isn't a Democrat hotbed or anything. Oh, wait... |

I would love to hear Thomas' Glenn Beck-inspired, teabagger rantings about why he decided to make a "statement" against Obama by not going to the event.
Nothing wrong with expressing an opinion, but I seriously doubt that Thomas' opinion is well-thought out and coherent.

Thomas not going is a douche bag move, he should really get over it. It would be funny to see Thomas with a chalkboard connecting hockey pucks to communism |

#1 You sound just like most "stupid Americans" making an idiotic statement like that. So much for Canadians being smarter and more respectful.
#2 Thomas has the right to his opinion and good for him for standing up for his. - glove_was_stuck
Yeah, he has the right, but it makes him look pretty selfish in my opinion.
It's not like Obama was going to personally honor him as the greatest goalie in the league or whatever ... in which case he'd have every right to boycott it if he so desired. But this was to honor the team for their accomplishment. By not going Thomas simply made it all about himself.
Btw, I'm far from an Obama supporter ... but it just seems pretty selfish of Thomas to make a personal political statement out what was supposed to be a ceremony to honor the SC champions. |

Doesn't help promote the league either. A blemish for sure. This day shouldn't of been about politics. |

Agreed. The bottom line is that politics and sports do NOT mix. This reminds me of a few years back when the Flyers had Sarah Palin drop the puck at their home opener vs. the Rangers. It caused SO much division among Flyers fans who suddenly found themselves taking political sides rather than rooting for their own team. It ruined the game and a lot of good will. Thomas is doing the same here by injecting his own personal politics into a situation that was designed to honor a sport and a TEAM. |

Exactly. I highly doubt every other player on the team is a staunch liberal/democrat. They just realize it's an honour and a photo op nothing more, nothing less.
I wonder what Jon Stewart will have to say about it... |

Exactly. Now instead of a honor its becoming a national debate. No one is talking hockey. |

In which case, if Thomas is a firm believer in his political stance, why should he be forced to be a prop in a promotional opportunity for a political party he (apparently) happens to strongly disagree with?

It should not be about the party but about promoting the national hockey league. He just made it a political event by not showing up. Can't wait to see the daily show on this one. |

Maybe he had something more important to do, maybe he was visiting a kid in a hospital or something, or was shopping for moustache grooming equipment. The man sure can grow a stash. |

It's not a promotional opportunity for a political party, though. As I said, I sincerely doubt that every member of every other championship team that visits the White House is a liberal and yet they are all able to swallow their political fervour and be a team member first. |

He's not the first to refuse the opportunity either. US Women's Olympic Soccer Coach refused to meet Bush several years ago, Matt Chmura refused to meet Clinton (for different reasons). You're entitled to your opinion and I respect that but so am I and so is Thomas, he's choosing to exercise that right on a bigger stage and I respect him for having the conviction of his beliefs. |

Presumptuous, yes. Baseless, no.
Several news reports have said that Thomas is a big fan of Glenn Beck and financially supports FreedomWorks, a really stupid Tea Party-affiliated organization.
So if Thomas' political beliefs are anything like Beck or FreedomWorks, then Thomas' views are not well-thought out or coherent. Anybody who takes Beck seriously is a complete idiot. And anybody who donates money to FreedomWorks is buying into that right-wing Kool-Aid too much.
Now, I can think of many reasons for choosing to "snub" Obama, among them his atrocious record on civil liberties which, is worse than Bush in many ways.
However, Glenn Beck and Tea Party groups are not really known to call him out on that. They prefer to call him a socialist and other nonsense. My guess is Thomas buys into that. And if that's why he chose not to visit the White House, it's a good thing he knows how to stop a puck because the man's intellectual gifts are not very many. |
