Talk about selective reading. I guess you missed multiple posts on how people are angry nobody stepped up?

And how most people didn't have a problem with him playing, just that he didn't do any enforcing.

He's paid to play Hockey for the Philadelphia Flyers, why wouldn't he play in case of injury?
- Schenn2shine

When your "enforcer" isnt being an enforcer, whats the point of holding a roster spot for him?

I had no problem with Shelley dressing last night, but I do have a problem if he doesnt do what he is suppose to do. You can argue either way about last night but I think it was the perfect opportunity to do what he was paid to do (which isnt scoring or assisting on goals).

Richards was the shut down center... Carter was always the 2nd line center.

Always.

The Flyers have signed, drafted and traded for the majority of tough players. Cote retires, we sign another guy just like him. When and why are the Flyers expected to change? They'll be the last team to change.
- Schenn2shine

I understand that. What does that have to do with anything?

The Flyers employ enforcers. They probably will be the 30th team in the NHL to stop carrying a heavyweight enforcer. I get that, and accept it, even if I disagree with it.

The point is, the reason that a team employs a guy like Shelley is Two fold. The first part is to prevent opposing teams from taking runs at your skilled players, or hitting them late, or to even provide space so they can do their thing. The second part is if or when the skilled players get run, or hit late or roughed up, the guy who does it has to answer for it with his fists.

So if Cal Clutterbuck, or Patrick Kaleta or Matt Cooke is out there taking runs at skilled guys, or hitting guys late or any other shenanigans, when Shelley or whomever the enforcer is, is supposed to go and seek retribution from the guy who delivered the hit.

Shelley has dressed for at least two games now, where an opposing player delivered at least or or two questionable hits, and Shelley didn't prevent it, or seek retribution for it. In terms of his play, he did a solid job, but he failed to fill his primary role.

i know you're joking, but he had no other replacement options...none that i'm aware of anyway - unless he's able to just take guys off the phantoms roster at will?

Cutterbuck has to agree to the fight is what I'm saying. What's Shelley suppose to do, tackle him? Matt Carkner in Ottawa tried to drag Wayne Simmonds into a fight a week and half ago and what happened when Wayne Simmonds refused?

That's my issue with how Shelley played last night. He turned in a good workmanlike performance. Had a hit or two(that I saw), was solid in his own end, and didn't hurt the team at all.

But he also didn't seek retribution from any of the Wild players that took runs or delivered late hits.

The difference.. Carkner tried to do what he is there for (besided being the 6th dman).. he actually tried to drag Simmonds into a fight.

Did shelley do that?

He doesnt have to fight Clutterbuck but you make it know to him or any other player out on the ice, when your shift comes around.

Do we, or do we not know whether or not Laviolette suggested against this?

I have to agree. If I wanted someone who did what Shelley did last night, why have him on this team (and at that price $1.1M).

Shelley broke into the league with Columbus.. and was often a healthy scratch during his 7 years there. Playing 80+ games one...

Here's his career... mind you how BAD columbus is.. and he still couldn't stay in the lineup there...

2000-2001 - 1 game
2001-2002 - 52 games 3 goals 3 assists +1 206 PIM
2002-2003 - 68 games 1 goal 4 assists -5 249 PIM
2003-2004 - 76 games 3 goals 3 assists -10 228PIM
2005-2006 - 80 games 3 goals 7 assists -4 163 PIM
2006-2007 - 72 games 1 goal 1 assist -6 125 PIM
2007-2008 - 62 games 1 goal 7 assists -2 135 PIM (Year he went to SJ)
2008-2009 - 70 games 2 goals 2 assists -6 116 PIM
2009-2010 - 57 games 2 goals 7 assists +5 115 PIM
2010-2011 - 58 games 2 goals 2 assists +0 127 PIM

These are not the stats of an NHL player. These are the stats of a guy who only fights. He plays against other teams 4th lines, and plays poorly against them.

He's an enforcer. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nope, skate up to him, get into his face and goad him into fighting. Deliver a shove, taunt him and tell him if he doesn't fight, then his star player is going to get to meet your shoulder pad, face to face.

He may not be willing to fight-happens a lot nowadays, which is why I think goons will be extinct in another few years or so-but at least make the effort.

I heard Lava told Shelley that if he didnt go to the aid of his teammates and try to prevent a guy known for big hits from running around, he would take him to olive garden.. guess where they were just spotted...

Actually they are the stats of an NHL player, just not a very good one.
