And how does that help with the 50 contract issue?

Bartulis I though had some potential but its obvious he has declined over the past few years (injuries). I just thought he could of been a good number 6 defenseman.
- stveshdy

he looked great in the Olympics, if only he could have that drive in playing an nhl game

Thought that was LA?
- vejim

Nope. It's Florida.

They have LA's 2nd rounder this year. Tampa Bay has the Flyers' 2nd rounder from the Meszaros trade.

Yea, the 2nd in the Versteeg deal is conditional.

I agree... if he were to sign a 2 year extension the 2nd wouldnt be as terrible... but at the end of the day he is a UFA in 6 months.. 3rd or bust.. Id potentially wouldnt mind a phantom player who is a 4th line grinder type.. we have a serious surplus of those it seems..
- jak521

Not sending a 2nd or 3rd for a 36 year old Gill. The Flyers need to get younger on defense not older imo. I would be willing to deal a 2nd for a 28 yr old Gleason though.

I posted yesterday that Gill might be a solid addition. He makes a slug look fast but he does provide nastiness that is useful to let Bryz see the puck/ not allow tip shots all over the joint.

I think the drop off in skill from 2nd to 3rd is considerable enough to justify sending that pick for a guy like Gill. Yes he is 36, but he is as steady a defensive d-man vet as you are gonna find. He is nasty, plays solid defense and is a tremendous leader. Fills the Pronger void (obviously not the same caliber players) pretty well.

EDIT: I like Gleason a lot, but dont think a 2nd would be near enough for him.. especially since a bunch of teams will likely be in on him..

They have 49 contracts. 50 Counting Noebbels, who is currently a slide contract.

In fact, Johna Backlund has been loaned to a European team, so they might have 2 contract slots available.

He's getting a 2nd and a 3rd. They'll either have 2 seconds in 2012 or 2013.

Yep, it's Florida's choice whether it's 2012 or 13.

I understand all of that. I dont want to get older on the blueline. If I trade for Gleason im getting younger (than adding Gill). I would be willing to resign a player of his age rather than signing Gill for one or two more years at age 37-38. I dont think its worth a 2nd or 3rd for Gill, thats just my opinion.

Bartulis looked like he was going to be a solid 3rd pairing player. Then he got that injury I believe to his shoulder and hes never been the same. He just looked timid when he was out on the ice.
- stveshdy

Yep. Like Lindros said on Missanelli's show last month, you get injured and you can come back scared. Granted, 88 was talking about concussions, but it holds true with any injury. The next hit to the same area could be the last you take.

Considering the reported price for Gleason is a 2nd and Harry Z now, I doubt it goes down between now and the deadline. Another rumor floating around is that Carolina wants to move Ruuttu and Gleason as a package...not sure how valid that is.

Correct, they lost Nodl which gave them an open slot. But Backlund still counts.

They're not going to get rid of Lilja. And how are they going to trade Shelley?
- MJL

Even tho I am Leight..THey just ask the team they are trading with to take on one of the contracts in the minors I'd say..

I said about 2 weeks ago that is the move I would look to make. Ruuttu was born to be a Flyer.
