I like Gionta. He has heart and he's one of 3 players who are actually still trying. But I don't like him for 5M for the next 3 years. - habsteen26

Deserving of being the top paid goalie in the league or not 7 mil per does the team no favours. If he wants that money the term should be shorter. |

They can't go over 60-62 millions for 10 years. |

Why wouldn't the cap hit be the same each year? |

this is it for me too. Most teams with big money goalies do poorly. $5.5M-6M should be the max. Just ask Buffalo. They regret the Miller deal. |

has to do with the cap savings in the earlier years of the deal. It's too complex for me to grasp but you're penalized in a buyout for front loading the deal. I guess it was supposed to prevent people giving the long term, front loaded retirement contracts we see anyways |

Agreed. And if there's really a 7/49 on the table, I'm disapointed he hasn't signed it yet. |

Hard to say.
I think 7M is too much if you want to have a balanced team.
10 years is way too long.. 7 ? also long.
I don't see why the Habs would do it now at that price. He's still an RFA and IMO would cost less for 1 year ( if it goes to Arb)...but do you want to go there...?
On the other hand, he's a franchise player. Franchise players and goalies are paid in the vicinity of 7M a year...locking him up seems like the smart thing to do... as long as you can trade the contract down the road... IF.. it doesnt work out. |

It would be better to use re-entry waiver. Would cost 3.65M per year for two years. |

I agree, but I think the only option is to front load the deal. I don't think Price will hear reason over this. And Habs don't have Halak anymore as a plan B. |

$10M for the first couple of years and a 6M average over 10 years. If he factors interest, it works out to more... |

They regret it mostly because they have a younger, cheaper option now who is playing better. I still think Miller is the guy you'd want to go to war with but Sabres fans disagree. |

10 yrs is waaaayyy too long for a goalie. 7 years tops. As far as the per I love price but he hasn't proven his worth in the playoffs. How can you give him top money?? 5.5 mil tops in a 6 year deal. |

you're giving top money based upon the idea that you assume he will be worth it by the third year of the deal and you get a few years at a discount. If you want to give him $5M per he will only sign for 3 years id bet. He's worth $5M NOW so why would he sign for that long term? |

And if he does not want to sign, what do you do? They have nobody in the AHL or anywhere near the NHL to take his place. |
