It's definitely a waste of contracts, and not a wise way to use resources, but it's not like the money is coming out of Snider's pockets. Flyers salaries are covered by team revenues. Snider is making money hand over fist. The Flyers made enough money over the WC weekend to pay for Shelley, Walker, Leighton etc. 10x over.
- PLindbergh31

It is.

In some cases, such as Walker, it's the cost of doing business. In other cases, like Leighton, it's poor asset management. Also, it's possible he knows that Snider is willing to write off the bad deal here and there if it allows the good deals to work out.

Like anyone, Holmgren has his strengths and weaknesses as a manager. In terms of wins and losses, he's done a good job, though.

And so far, Shelley's contract has not prevented them from keeping a player they otherwise would have. When it does, that argument becomes valid.
- Jsaquella

Ill leave the signing alone, as I am going positive. Like I said nothing against Shelley more against why the Flyers need to carry an enforcer for a high price, imo.

Howard is a beast of a goalie, If Bryz played like that the Flyers would be a hell of a dangerouse team. Heres hoping Bryz gets into form
- bigmookalookie

Howard was swimming outside of his net there for a few seconds. I'd say Howard has a pretty good defense in front of him to protect the net.

That's where I am. I dislike having an enforcer. I'll positively hate it if it becomes an obstacle to making the team better.

Yup. Holmgren has done a very good job. Like you said he's made mistakes, but every GM does. People forget the mess Holmgren inherited, and how quickly he fixed it. Not easy to do in a Cap era.

And it's going around and around in circles. And it's back to being under the Cap for next Season. In which as stated earlier, the Flyers can waive Shelley and if he clears or is claimed, remove him from the Cap to be Cap compliant. We've now gone through this Season, into the off season, and into next Season.

We could make an arguement for every important position of our team up and down.

Snider
Holmgren
Laviolette
Giroux
Pronger/Timonen

Maybe not goaltending at the moment but the potential is there.

That's a big factor, too. Homer got a huge mess and made it better in short time.

Not really cause he was taking a big hit owning the Sixers who probably cost him big time money. Im sure he is glad to have sold them however.
- stveshdy

I'm sure he took a bath with the Sixers, but the Flyers have been a cash cow for Snider forever.

Also Howard has kept the score 2-1. Nothing is getting by him. He is playing excellent hockey, 3rd perios was all blackhawks, Howard made alot of huge saves to keep the score at 1
also 11-0 shots in the 3rd when it was 13:00, not all D

Exactly. Despite the bonus overage creating dead space from last year and not having a bonus cushion so guys like Couturier, Schenn and Bobrovsky have inflated hits, the Flyers have had cap room to make moves when needed.

Be it by hook or crook, they have managed to work the cap. If they need to cut ties with Shelley to make it work, they will.

Holmgren isn't one to not fix mistakes, even when they are his.

The #Hurricanes are looking to move forward Tuomo Ruutu and defenseman Tim Gleason as a package deal right now

Take is for what it's worth.

My buddy use to work for the Phantoms before they moved. He told me that Snider was losing like $2M a year. Now that doesnt seem like alot but when you add that up over 5 years its a decent amount of money. Then you add in the Sixers, thats a significant hit imo but then again I dont have the pockets Snider does.

I agree. I will also take into account that almost every team in the league has a player(s) that they missed on.
- stveshdy

that's 4 misses though.

I have no clue but does any team have 3 NHL contracts in the minors and maybe a 4th if they need cap space?

I know the Rangers have 2 for sure

$6.55mm of cap space-in full year hits.

That's about $2mm north of what the Flyers can take on.

The Rangers have paid 13M to Redden to play in the AHL for the last two years. And they still owe him 10M more. The Flyers total is a drop in the bucket.

Why? To bring in a big name that has no desire to play in the playoffs? It makes no sense to move them together if it betters the Canes and if a team wants both but the Canes shouldn't have a preference.
