I am not sure, but I believe there are only certain points in the year you can buy out a player (or under specific conditions). If the Habs wanted to buy out Gomez, they would have to wait for that window. I do not believe you can buy out players whenever you want.

I wonder if there will be an amnesty on buying out contracts this time around. Will be interesting to see... good point.

Buyouts can only happen within a couple days (48 hours I think) of the team's final RFA qualifying offer during the summer. They have a small buyout window.
