They did a serious swan dive in the second half. That and they had a healthy Pronger going into the playoffs, last year his health wasn't certain and the team looked a whole lot different with him out. - JoeRussomanno
All true. But Holmgren's mindset was that he was trying to position his team for the playoffs. Not to do a favor for another GM.

The year before they reached the playoff on the last day, via a shootout and went to the Final. I think Holmgren was thinking they could pull a similar run. |

I don't think they have soured on JvR at all. I think that Burke loves him, and is actively trying to get him. Even if you love a player, if another GM comes in and makes a pitch, you hear him out.
It sure seemed that Burke wanted to bring in one of his old Duck players, but apparently, he's shifted to JvR. - Jsaquella
Murray prob told him to duck off. |

yeah, but hard to believe that they soured on JVR this quickly, to be in all these rumors - puckhead17
Personally I don't see why he's not out of the lineup getting why whatever is wrong with him fixed. I think it's the team letting him play while offers are being conversed. If they take him out of the lineup to get surgery or heal you can't move him. By me explaining that he could be on the trade table doesn't imply I want him gone either, I'm perfectly fine with waiting for him to work his way out of this funk or get healthy, but the team does have needs. |

Homer said for what, 4 years now?, that all teams would start with, (in a trade, were Giroux & JVR), and that trade talks would end at that point. |

my own observation and research on what he could become vs what I would consider a top pairing guy. rated as a 2nd pairing shutdown guy who would be valuable in pk situations but I don't see a role for him on the pp, which I would expect out of a top pairing guy. - isaiah520
If your doing research there is plenty of information out there that says he has potential to be a top pairing defenseman. A top pairing defenseman doesn't have to play on the PP. There is a difference between a #1 D man and a #2 D man. But both are top pair players. The defensive side of the puck and the PK is every bit as important as the offensive side of the puck, and the PP. If not more important.

Holmgren also said that Mike Richards was everything he wanted in a player and a captain. Things change. |

If Burke wants him that bad, he'll have to give an offer that shows it. |

Yea you guys are right, its never over till its over. I just won't let go of the notion that Gm's don't wheel and deal and do favors here and there. I'm of the mind taking Versteeg off their hands last year was a favor. It's not an idea I'm determined to prove right either just a hunch. |

Yes, the top need at this point being a young stud defender to compliment the young guys up front, but they could do this in different ways
I agree, he should have the surgery, because, like a lot of other fans, I'm tired of seeing him play one game on, 3 games off.
So is this a given that Carle is gone as well?? |

And if it's not good enough you keep the lines open for other d-men currently on the "trade market" |

i have no idea if schenn will be a first pairing guy or not, but i would consider brooks orpik a first pairing d man, and he doesn't have much of an offensive game |

He had offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia. From the time he got here I absolutely hated the guy. But looking at what he became in florida after the surgery leads me to believe he was damaged goods when the Flyers got him. Which leads me to believe that physicals mean nothing when a team wants a guy bad enough. Which leads me to believe that if toronto wants JVR bad enough however badly he's messed up, he will pass that physical in Toronto. |
