I think the likeliest scenario is a pending UFA Dman being added near the deadline. All the obvious suspects Gleason, Beauchemin etc.... With the plan being trying to sign Suter on July 1. If the Suter plan falls through the Flyers may try and re-sign the player they acquire at the deadline, as well as re-signing Carle. It doesn't make much sense trading a core player for Suter when he can potentially walk after 25 games in a Flyers sweater.

what about a guy like Hal Gill?

I agree, but lets not overlook the possibility of them having a contract agreed upon when the trade is made. That is a very possible scenario.
- Flyers2821

That's possible. But it would have to be a sign and trade. Suter may not agree to that. He may want to get to free agency and let the bids come in, and choose where he wants to go. Most likely the highest bidder.

Why? Flyers could talk with Suter and his agent prior to the deal being made and work out a contract to be signed when he is traded... there's no way Nashville comes to an agreement on a contract with him and then trades him.
- Flyers2821

No they can't talk to Suter and his agent before a deal is made. He is Nashville property.

getting warmer, at least.

I LOVE Ryan Suter. I think he could replace most of what Kimmo brings seamlessly.

But if I'm trading JvR, I'd want a stud defenseman that is still on his ELC.

No. He would pick the Flyers and sign a 7 year deal at 2.2 per.

Gill wouldn't be a bad option. Have to figure he is available, and should come fairly cheap.

No I wouldn't trade JVR for Suter.
- MJL

Only way I would is if the Flyers know they can lock him up right away(and what the cost will be) beforehand. I'd want a conditional 1st and 3rd on the books if he walks though.

Why? You acquire the player and sign him to a long term contract before he hits the market. Flyers would have no problems giving him a long term contract, we all are aware of that.
- Flyers2821

You're starting to get slightly ridiculous.

In my eyes, a Suter for JVR deal is an overpayment on the Flyers' part. Even if it was a sign and trade. Even then, (and I'm not really up to date with this) how would that work cap-wise with the Flyers? Don't forget- we have Voracek and Carle to worry about after this year. I want to stand pat for this year, grab a Gleason/Mark Staurt guy for a few mid round picks, and then go for broke and cram a Suter contract in the offseason.

It's not like this team's Stanley Cup window is dwindling as fast as the Phils' World Series window is. This team is good and very, very young. Waiting one season's worth of player development to get that bona fide defenseman they need could prove even more valuable than trading away some of that young talent in the first place.

I don't care what you say. All of your devil's advocate stuff is not going to sway most people to the Suter side. The Preds are asking for the moon and frankly it's not worth it, even if it's a sign and trade.

3 year deal at 1.1 per. Flyers have had lots of success with those exact numbers.

Kimmo aside, Mez is the last D man I'd want to trade. Even if the return is Suter. I'd rather sign and trade Carle tbh.

I'm still not into that deal. The possibility of the trade becoming "JVR for draft picks" isn't what I'd call enticing, not when the opportunity to sign Suter you're acquiring comes free on July 1.
