John's 25 Random Hockey Facts

1. My favourite team as a little kid was the Chicago Blackhawks.

2. No one in my family knew anything about Hockey and no two people in my house while I was growing up liked the same sport. My grandfather was a baseball fan, my father was a football fan and my mother was a basketball fan.

3. I've never played Ice Hockey. I only skated three times before this year. I've skated 6 times so far in 2009 and I'm thinking of buying skates.

4. My favourite player as a kid was Behn Wilson because we looked alike and had similar dispositions.

5. My first game was a Flyers Blackhawks game in 1981-82. By then I was a Flyers fan. Tony O was my favourite goalie. Murray Bannerman played that game and Sittler tied it in the third with the goalie pulled.

6. When I was a kid, if the flyers were losing during the commercial I would turn the dial all the way around back to the channel. If they were still losing I'd turn it around the other way during the next commercial.

7. No one in my house is allowed to turn the channel if the Flyers are ahead.

8. I never go out to watch away playoff games and no one who wouldn't normally be there can come to my house. If these rules are broken it's a sure loss.

9. I've touched the Stanley Cup in Canada and the US.

10. Until the new stadiums were built I had a huge collection of famous hockey people I've used a urinal beside. No stalking involved. At one point in the early 90's I had peed next to more than half the GMs in the league. All my friends and I found this completely hysterical. I once used the urinal between Maurice Richard and Phil Esposito in Atlantic City.

11. I still have my Bobby Clarke stick with the plastic blade from when I was a kid.

12. I own Pete Peeters' black goalie mask. He was wearing it when Wayne Gretzky scored 5 goals against the Flyers to shatter the 50 goals in 50 games mark.

13. I've met every member of both Flyer's Cup Teams except for Mel Bridgman and Bill Flett.

14. During my wedding ceremony I had to make everyone turn off the fourth game of the Rangers Flyers Playoffs in 1995. We turned it back on after and watched the Flyers sweep.

15. After our honeymoon my father-in-law picked us up at the airport and dropped me off on Broad Street so I could watch the first game of the Devils series. I didn't miss a single playoff game.

16. My friend and I got on the Devils fans charter bus after the Claude Lemeuix playoff goal and started a screaming match that turned into a brawl. I had half a Devils hat hanging from a lamp in my apartment for years.

17. I have a puck autographed by Irvine Ace Bailey that he signed for me outside the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990. For some unknown reason, it's the most cherished piece of memorabilia I own.

18. I've never caught a puck but I've been hit by one twice.

19. I've seen NHL games in Hartford, Landover, the Meadowlands, Long Island, Manhattan, Pittsburgh, Tampa and Philadelphia.

20. I've been taken away by security in four different NHL arenas. I've never been charged in any of those incidences

21. I refuse to wear the jersey of a player younger than me. I think it's weird.

22. I cheer for the Canucks and the Kings when I'm not giving myself an aneurysm watching the Flyers. In some strange and troublesome twist of fate, I currently own more Canucks jerseys than I do Flyers Jerseys.

23. The greatest game I've ever seen in person or on live TV was the Miracle on Manchester. In the wasteland of summer I'll watch it a couple times each year.

24. Ed Snider once told me to go F**k myself after a playoff loss when I told him we'd get them next year.

and...
25. My greatest hockey regret is being on the concourse of the Spectrum shortly before the conclusion of a Bruins Flyers game when Ron Hextall scored his goal. I never left early but did for some reason that day.

Hi Gang,

I re-worked, re-vamped and replaced (in some instances) my list from yesterday and threw it into a blog of my own.

Please have a look ...

This was a great idea and a great thread that ended up bringing back a lot of memories for me. Always fun to share that sort of thing ...

I know what you've had to say about Glennie, but what are your thoughts on Brayden Schenn.

You much watch a fair share of WHL games, if you were the Leafs who would you take between Schenn and Kane?

- TML35

Hey there! I may have to repost this elsewhere in case you don't check back...

Well, quite frankly, Brayden Schenn will be the next Bryan Trottier. It's that simple. Ask yourself if you want Bryan Trottier on your hockey team. That's what I thought. Okay, the thing with B. Schenn is that he's a lot more 2-way minded than the guys above him (Tavares, Duchene, Kane), and capable in his own zone (didn't see a lot of that from JT, but then, that's not why you draft him). This isn't to say Schenn can't score; he'll be more of a playmaker, but he can put the puck in the net just fine. He's very good at finding guys in traffic.

Evander Kane... I haven't seen him play live because Vancouver didn't come out here this year. However, what I saw at the Jrs. was VERY impressive. He looks more like a Neely to me. He's also benefitting from a very strong team around him, which is giving him time to grow on his own terms. He'll be a fine pick for any team, but the reasons I suggest that the Leafs would benefit more from Schenn than Kane are 1.) brother is playing there (huge motivator for him, and he told me so personally), 2.) if the Leafs can get another 1st for whatever, getting Glennie would give them a wicked core; you can't just create chemistry out of nothing.

Brayden Schenn isn't as flashy as some people would like, but all he does is rack up points. You usually don't see him coming, which is what makes him so dangerous. His timing to hit guys like Glennie coming over the blue line with the puck is sublime. Here's my profile on him: http://www.mynhldraft.com...t-Profiles/Brayden-Schenn

Actually, Duchene is very strong defensively. And frankly I think Kane is simply a better player than Schenn.

Ok, thanks for the very thorough response.

I wouldn't be disappointed with either Kane or Schenn, with Kane's flashiness and skill I think he'd be a star here in Toronto, but so would the Schenn brothers.

Now here's the thing: I haven't seen much of Duchene at all. I just talked to an OHL fan in Toronto and he tells me that Duchene's speed is ridiculously good. I know nothing of his defensive ability (you're the first to mention it).

Kane did make the Junior team while Schenn did not, that might say something, but I stand by my assessment of Schenn (seen him live about 20 times)... he'll be a a quiet star in this league and leave the flashy stuff to others. You can't go wrong with him. Actually, this is such a deep draft, I'll be surprised if any of the top 15 don't have great careers (the only one I think might be a question mark is the Swede Josefson... he didn't really stand out at the Jrs. Might be a late blooming arrival).

Josefson was injured during the WJHCs.

And yeah, Duchene is strong defensively. His speed, shot, hands and play-making ability are so good that that aspect of his game isn't as talked about, though.

But IMO Duchene is the #3 player in this draft, and isn't far off from #s 1 and 2.

Wow. An amazing 20!
So many great ones already today.

To those who said it ought to be 25...here are a few more that come to mind..

21. My first live game I ever saw was bernie parents last.
22. My sister was friends with Ryan Sittler when they were toddlers. I saw Ryan play live years later in the ECHL during one of the last games in Nashville Knights history. I have a game worn knights jersey.
23. I almost died of exhaustion playing goalie during a pick up 3 on 3 half court game with some phantom players ron hextall and kjell samuelsson, who I stoned with the best globe save of my life.
24 I have a lifesize painted mural of Pelle Lindbergh that was given to me by a stranger in the parking lot of the memorial game for Pelle.
25. I met Shania Twain before she was famous at a Nashville Knights game. We hit it off, she asked me out and I said no because I had a girlfriend.

And the Ducks turned those 3 picks into Jake Gardiner, Nicholas Deschamps, and Josh Brittain, big effing deal.

The 1st rounder Burke threw us in the Pronger deal because they made the final we turned in Eberle.

I'd say Gardiner is sure to make the league. His impact? I will consult the auguries.

Potential was why Lowe went after Vanek and Penner. He saw greater things for them. So I think potential very much factors into this. I don't begrudge him Vanek... but I just did not see what he did in Penner. The guy is so slow he's stationary... I just could not see him as a fit with lightning quick Hemsky.
