Lupul will get hurt on the way to the appointment.

Hossa has 4 years remaining at 1 mill per, but a 5.25 cap hit.. Betman (frank)ed up.

All the choices around Lupul, Robidas, Horton, Clarkson et. al., may not be possible.

Also, going to be almost impossible to bury the Marleau contract in the last year.

Much more so. In the Hossa case they appear to have created a disease (skin disease) as the basis of their moving him to LTIR. They would not be able to retire him because he was plus 35 when he signed his contract so he remains on the cap.

Lupul is an oft injured player who just stayed on LTIR. Nobody doubts he is fragile and often injured. The only question is if he is "fit" now. The fact he says he plans on resuming his career once his contract expires is problematic.

But the Hawks created a disability of acne.

- spatso

It was the timing. It was a cap-circumventing deal in the first place, and now when those bullpoop final years kick in, he is "injured".

I am pretty sue everyone knows the "injury" actually took place the day he signed the contract.

I think you missed the point. All those deals that I referenced involved players that were on LTIR (e.g. Clarkson for Horton). There is not going to be any change in LTIR. There is going to be restrictions on how you move contracts of players on LTIR.
- spatso

Seems with Rian, mac and fanuef that this should be a big concern to the sens

Does Phaneuf bring value to the team?
Yes.

Is his contract an issue, perhaps.

Ottawa has about 14 players who will becoming UFAs in the next two years, so there are decisions that will be made to accommodate the players they want to keep and let go.

Perhaps??

You couldn't give him away at half price.

Well I think his was one of the earlier ones signed.. they did eventually do something about the loophole they were exploiting ..basically once Lou signed Kovy it was all over.

its a weird dynamic.. the NHL Owners fight for a cap, then teams try their hardest to get around it

Under current ownership - it is not a concern, Sens are not a cap team - they could not dream to do what the Leafs did with Horton. Take on an un-insured contract of $5.3 million for a player not to contribute. But there is not a single team that is hurt more than the Leafs by the salary cap. Welfare teams looking for handouts from rich teams like the Leafs (Arizona, Carolina and a few others right now - Ottawa could join that group at some point) would be wise not to be too quick to bite the hand that feeds them.

Let's be honest, in a free vote, there is no way in hell the Leafs, Rangers, Habs or Hawks vote for a salary cap. Teams with pathetic viewership and attendance that can barely make payroll or lose money are on the salary cap like a fat kid on a giant smartie.

It doesn't really matter though. His salary is less than his cap, and Ottawa doesn't want to spend that much money anyways.

i have a feeling the sabres could take the sens or leafs spot in the playoffs this season. that team has a lot of talent most of it young. canes have the potential to steal a wild card spot but are likely a year or two away. blue jackets imo take a step back. something about them isnt right with me.

Sabres a little bit strange for me, only way I see Leafs not making the playoffs is if the injury bug bites them.

Small market team love the ltir trades (teams took savard and pronger and datsyuk ect) because they didn't have to pay actual money, but t raised their cap hits to the minimums. You're clueless if you think they want to lose that.

Phaneuf contract is not a problem. He is a good skater, physical player and still young by Dman standards. The Canadian $000 is robust and as a result teams are up substantially on their cash flow conversion to $US (upwards of 20% over last year).

More important we are going to see a heavy jump in the cap next year. Phaneuf only has three years left after this year. He played an amazing role for the Sens last year.

Right now the Leafs do not have a Dman as good as Phaneuf is today. Phaneuf is still a long way off from retirement. He will get at least one more good NHL contract.

Now, as you know, I have never been a fan of the Bobby Ryan deal.

Hossa has already had his independent medical examination. Lupul is next. I don't see much changing on Hossa or Lupul.

But, it is a clear signal that the league is going to become more engaged where there are abuses of the salary cap intent through the use of the LTIR.

Bettman has never liked Lamerello and the Leafs need to tread carefully.

Right now the Senators don't want to get rid of him ........... maybe in a year or two, but not now.
