so you're saying a better sample means worse results?
- Feeling Glucky?

I'm saying that if you look at the teams in playoff positions by around the middle of December, those are pretty much the teams that end up there by the ends of the Season.

But don't take my word for it, take note of the 16 teams this season, around the 15th of December, that sit in playoff positions, and then see how many of them end up in the playoffs.

To not look at the site he started talking about out of the blue.

And to ignore that he was making numbers up on the last page.

Still can't wrap my head around the fact some games are worth more points than others.

Give 3 points for a regulation win and be done with it already.

I'm with you, but I think the NHL would view it as a waste of time. Year after year people re-do the standings with 3 points for a regulation win, and it's always pretty much the same.

Point is, teams would probably try to win in regulation.

Yeah, but Bettman and the owners wouldn't do it. The current system keep more teams in the race for a longer time. $$$

Yeah, but the NHL ranks their teams based on a points system, in which you can lose a game, and still come away with a point.

So they scrapped the W% column on their main stats page, and replaced it with the P% column many many years ago.

But that's not what is used to determine who makes the playoffs or not. Unfortunately.

Well how do you measure the leafs vs another team?

From what the so called "experts" say both Ontario teams are going to fall short of the playoffs this season, and having the smallest chances to get the first overall pick in next years Entry Draft.

Should either of the these two teams join the Sabres, in the race to the bottom?

I put more faith than most in the stats.. form my experience they are a better indication of how a team is playing

that said there is not enough info yet to really see what a team is yet

Yeah, they were talking about last nights game, and according to corsi, MacArthur was Ottawa's worst player, with 1 goal, 4 shots, 2 blocked shots and selected second star of the game.

So I'll stick with what I see with my own eyes, and leave the advanced stats to others.

I didnt watch the game..just saw the box score this morning..but 1 game is not a good way to form an opinion on these stats. And who was speaking at the time a statement like that was made? MSM is starting to use these examples more and more to draw conclusions like that when they dont really understand them. or just use it as an example to discredit them. and fans like you eat it up

I took a look at the fancy stats just now since you mentioned it though

Macarthur was 36% Corsi (+9/-16) at 5v5
they have him with 1 goal for and 1 goal against while on the ice

I didnt check but I would also suspect Mac/turris line was matched up against Toews..so that puts it in context..

its a 1 off game against a very good possession team. 36% is not very good and if he was that over a long stretch of games..then sure draw some conclusions

Now Lazar, Hoffman and Stone put up some good corsi against chicago..thats impressive.. even if sheltered a little

I was not concerned that he was not playing, I was pointing out that he should have been sent to the Marlies, or the OHL if he was eligible........and either of these two leagues would better prepare him for the NHL.

The SHL is basically a non-contact league, and players from this league, in general, and further behind than their peers in the OHL and the AHL when adapting to the North American style of play in the NHL. (see Rundblad)

Are you suggesting an above average performance in the SHL, will have him better prepared for the NHL than if he had just an average performance with the Marlies?

William Nylander has 9 points in 7 games
A good start

u20 ppg in SEL is very hard to do, lets see if he can maintain it

for comparison (taken from some tweets I saw)

the last players to come close to a ppg were
H/D Sedin, Markus Naslund, N Backstrom, Forsberg

http://www.eliteprospects...0&nation=&name=&order=PPG

Kid is 18 (not 19 until may)

I think he is doing ok
