when the bases are loaded in a tie game, it's always best practice to bring in your absolute worst pitchers.

shame is that they don't realize durbin is garbage (or else they wouldn't have signed him).

Oh God, we're just where we left off last year. The hole in middle relief has become a chasm. Rich Dubey is still the worst pitching coach in the majors, and Charlie (Charlie, Charlie, Charlie) continues to screw up his team with breath-takingly bad managing. If Dubey or Charlie had been awake in the fifth inning, they would have seen the first signs (e.g., the fast ball in the dirt) of Kendrick tiring. But they keep him in to give up three straight hits in the sixth. Wow! Imagine what LaRussa would have done--he'd have pulled Kendrick at the first sign of trouble. But ole sentimental Charlie keeps Kendrick in the game, and puts his relievers in impossible situations. (Then again, maybe Charlie really doesn't have faith in his relievers.) Given the obvious holes in middle relief that sank the Phillies too many times last year, one might think that Amaro would have worked a little harder to beef up the bullpen. We are so screwed this year. With the third oldest team in the majors, there's no hope. All the Phillies can do is what they should have done last year: fire Amaro, Charlie, and the rest of the coaches (except Ryne, maybe), find a buyer for Ryan Howard to free up some serious money, restock with young promising players, and really develop their talent instead of screwing them up. Phillies fans are finding out what it's like to be Al Bundy.

That would do it for Hamels, as Charlie Manuel came out of the dugout to summon a suitable high-leverage reliever...

[Charlie Manuel inner monologue] Lessee, we've got, like, Jonathan Papelbon, but he's the Closer, and only pitches in the ninth, like. There's Mike Adams you know, but he's the Veteran Setup Guy, and he only, like pitches the eighth unless he jus' needs, uh, uh, to get some work in. Antonio Bastardo, you know, is pretty good, but he's the Young Setup Guy, and only pitches in the seventh, unless he like needs to get work in also. There's Phillippe Aumont, but he's French or somethin'. I could go get Raul Valdes, but I think we traded him to Seattle or something. Have to talk to Rooben. Like, huh. There's Jeremy Horst, but, like, he pitched yesterday, you know. Guess I'll get Chad Durbin up, like.[/Charlie Manuel inner monologue]
