The San Francisco Giants have signed Buster Posey on a nine-year, $167 million contract in a landmark deal, according to ESPN and multiple other media outlets.

Posey's new deal is the longest ever for a catcher, and worth the second-most money after Joe Mauer's $184 million, eight-year deal with the Twins. It's also the most money ever guaranteed to a player with fewer than three years of service time.

The contract, which is also the longest in Giants history, covers 2013-2021, with a team option for 2022. There is also a full no-trade clause for the duration of the contract.

Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander agreed Friday to a $180 million, seven-year contract, topping Felix Hernandez for the richest deal for a pitcher in baseball history.
The 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner had been signed through 2014 under an $80 million, five-year contract paying him $20 million in each of the next two seasons.

The new deal keeps those salaries and adds $140 million in guaranteed money: $28 million each season from 2015-19. It includes a $22 million option for 2020 that would become guaranteed if he finishes among the top five in 2019 Cy Young voting. The deal could be worth $202 million over eight seasons.

The Phillies claimed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera off waivers today from the Cleveland Indians, Ruben Amaro Jr. announced, and in turn, had to make a move to make room for him on the 40-man roster. In doing so, the club designated rookie outfielder Ender Inciarte for assignment.
