Tuesday night, the New York Yankees announcer was describing an Ichiro Suzuki bat when he did something he probably should not have. Cone called the bat a “chopstick” which I am sure is going to go over well in the media.

Phillies fire three coaches; Ryne Sandberg promotion next?

Minutes after their season came to an end with a 5-1 loss the Phillies announced that three members of manager Charlie Manuel’s coaching staff will not be back in 2013.

Bench coach Pete Mackanin, hitting coach Greg Gross, and first base coach Sam Perlozzo have all been let go, while pitching coach Rich Dubee and third base coach Juan Samuel will apparently stay on the staff.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that Triple-A manager Ryne Sandberg is expected to get a promotion to join Manuel’s staff, although his likely role is unclear.

Philadelphia briefly got back into the Wild Card hunt following a brutal start, but finished 81-81 to snap a nine-season streak of winning records that dates back to Larry Bowa as manager.

Ryne Sandberg's quest to return to the Major Leagues has been fulfilled.

The Hall of Fame second baseman and IronPigs manager the last two seasons has been named as the Phillies third base coach for the 2013 season, the team announced Thursday just hours before manager Charlie Manuel's season-ending press conference in Philadelphia.

IronPigs pitching coach Rod Nichols is also returning to the big leagues for the first time as a coach — he's been named the Phillies bullpen coach.

Steve Henderson, who has been the team's roving minor league hitting coordinator the past two seasons, has been named the Phillies hitting coach, replacing Greg Gross.

Mick Billmeyer, Rich Dubee and Juan Samuel have all been offered positions for the 2013 season.

Billmeyer, 48, has been promoted to the role of catching coach. The longest tenured member of the Phillies coaching staff, Billmeyer served as the team's bullpen coach for the past four years (2009-12) and prior to that as the major league catching instructor (2004-08).

Dubee, 54, has been retained as the pitching coach. The 2013 season will be Dubee's 12th in the Phillies organization and ninth at his current position.

Samuel, 51, has been offered the position of first base coach and outfield/baserunning instructor. He has spent the last two years as the Phillies third base coach and outfield instructor.

A former major league outfielder of 12 years (1977-88), the 61-year-old Henderson spent the last three seasons as a roving instructor in the Phillies minor league system, first as the outfield/baserunning coordinator (2010), the last two as the hitting coordinator (2011-12). Before coming to the Phillies, Henderson was the hitting coach for the Tampa Bay Rays for four years (2006-09).

Nichols, 47, has worked in the Phillies minor league system since 2000 as a pitching coach for four different affiliates, including the last eight years at the Triple-A level. Nichols pitched parts of seven seasons in the major leagues (1988-93, 1995).

As previously announced, the Phillies elected to not renew the coaching contracts of Greg Gross, Pete Mackanin and Sam Perlozzo.
