August 1 National Raspberry Cream Pie Day

National Raspberry Cream Pie Day is perfect for raspberry lovers.

Raspberries are one of the gems of summer. Sweet and tasty, it is loved by millions of people (and birds, too!) With the arrival of ripe berries, it is time to make and enjoy some of your favorite dessert treats. High on the list for raspberry lovers, is raspberry cream pie.

Make this a super raspberry day. Go out and pick your own berries. Then, make a raspberry cream pie. Better still, make one for you, and another to give away to a family member, a neighbor, or a friend. Then, dig in and eat a piece of pie....Yummmm!

Bratwurst Festival Day - Sheboygan, Wisconsin

The Way to Cook a Brat

From Mary Lou Haen,
of the Sheboygan Jaycees:

"First of all, bratwursts must be made outside on a Weber grill. Bratwurst cannot be boiled or microwaved! No matter what the temperature outside, this is the only true way bratwurst can be prepared. So, keep the Weber close to the house so Sheboygan brats can be enjoyed all year long.

"Use tongs when turning the brats over the coals. You don't want to lose any of the savory juices encased in the sausage. [Brats should be] grilled to a deep brown color (not burnt)."

If you're not ready to assemble your sandwich right away, there is a Sheboygan-approved method for holding bratwurst: Simmer 2 cans of beer with 1/4 cup butter and a thinly sliced onion. The brats can be kept hot in this mixture until ready to eat.

Sheboygan has to be one of the best town names ever. If I ever start a town, I'm going to name it Sheboygan.

S'Mores Day
10 August

When's the last time you had a S'More?

If you're camping, you can make genuine ones over the campfire.

Otherwise, you can make them as dessert on the backyard grill, or even in the microwave.

Hardcore fans can buy indoor S'More table-top "stoves".

Ice Cream Pie Day
18 August

If you're in the northern hemisphere, your summer's almost over, and time's running out to sit outside in the nice weather and just enjoy an Ice Cream Pie.

Why not treat a friend to an Ice Cream Pie today -- and because no doubt your friend will protest at eating alone, you might as well get one for yourself, too.

Yes, they may seem smaller than you remember them -- but remember, your hands are also way bigger too than when you were a kid.

Charles E. Hires Birthday
19 August

Today is the birthday of Charles E. Hires. Though he is often credited as being the inventor of Root Beer, Root Beer was actually a homemade beverage in America before Hires came along.

What Hires did do, though, was to be the first off the block to sell it commercially, first as an extract that you mixed up at home, and then in ready-to-drink bottles. And, he financed it all with mud.

Practically Edible has both his biography, and the history of Root Beer. Why not crack open a bottle or pour a can, and refresh both your memory and your taste buds at the same time?

Spumoni Day

21 August

If you missed Soft Ice Cream Day two days ago, you have another excuse today to have ice cream.

It's Spumoni Day, all day today!

You have two choices: you can try the Italian dessert called Spumoni, which has some ice cream in it, or you can try the North American Ice Cream called "Spumoni".

St Philibert's Day
22 August

In Kent, England, Hazelnuts (aka Filberts) are called "Cobb Nuts" or "Cobnuts."

Today, 22nd August, is the day when the Hazelnut harvest starts in Kent, as growers race to beat the squirrels to the nuts.

Some people speculate that the alternative name "Filbert" for the nuts may have in fact come from the harvest starting on this particular day.

St Bartholomew Day
24 August

Saint Bartholomew's Day is traditionally celebrated by eating watermelon.

Saint Bartholomew is also the patron saint of Mead.

* 1 seedless watermelon
* 1 1/2 cups rum, or as needed

DIRECTIONS

1. Rinse the outer rind of the watermelon thoroughly, and pat dry. Set the watermelon in a position so it will not roll over. Press the tip of a funnel through the rind of the melon. If using a plastic funnel, you may need to cut a hole.
2. Situate the melon on a towel in the bottom of the refrigerator or on the counter. Pour rum into the funnel a little at a time, refilling as it seeps into the melon. I start the afternoon before, since we usually leave to go to events in the morning. Allow the melon to marinate at least a few hours, before removing the funnel. Slice just before serving.

Banana Split Day
25 August

Go on, treat yourself today.

After all, how many times do you have a banana split? Even when they started out, at 10 cents each, they were still considered an expensive treat, and they still are now. But you only live once, so why not make it a point once a year on this day to treat yourself -- or sweet talk someone into treating you.

One town, Wilmington, Ohio, loves Banana Splits so much it holds a Banana Split festival every June. The folks in Wilmington in fact believe that the Banana Split was invented there, but their claim is disputed by folks in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and most people believe Latrobe's claim is stronger.

Some people believe firmly that the ice cream should be vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, and that the sauces should be pineapple, chocolate and strawberry. Anything else, they say, might be good, but it's a dish other than a banana split.
