# 1 tbsp baking powder
# 1 1/2 tsp salt
# 1 1/2 cups water
# 1 cup blueberries

Mix the dry ingredients together, add the blueberries and stir. Add the water quickly and continue to stir.

Spread the batter on a pie plate and put in a preheated oven heated to 425°F. Bake for 20 minutes. Cut in pieces and serve hot or cold. Excellent served with mint tea.

Québec National Day

Today is the national day of Québec, and an official state holiday there, with everyone getting the day off work.

The actual name for today is "St-Jean-Baptiste Day" (St John the Baptist Day) or Fete Nationale des Québecois (Québec National Celebration). St John is the national patron saint.

The big parade is held in Montréal; smaller ones are held in other centres. On the last float in the parade, there is a blonde, curly-haired child wearing sheepskin (representing St John), carrying a cane and a lamb (this tradition started in 1866.) Other allegorical floats in the parade represent various tales from the nation's history. In older days, after the parade, people used to go back to their church halls for large meals, then music, dancing and bonfires ("feux de joie").

Now, the churches have mostly disappeared from the celebrations, but the outdoor events remain with performances and sports throughout the country accompanied by flag-raising ceremonies. Picnics are held, and streets are closed off for street parties. In the evenings leading up to the day, there will be outdoor performances of song and dance, and fireworks and bonfires in some places.

The bonfires may hearken *way* back to mid-summer pre-Christian traditions. One tradition is that if you jump over a bonfire with the person you're sweet on, you'll be married within the year.

Celebrate today with poutine québecoise and tourtière (mind you, the Québecois may well be ordering pizza for themselves while you're doing that.)

History
The celebration of St John's Day in Québec started as early as 1636. By 1694, it was declared a work-free day by the Bishop of Québec, Jean-Baptiste de La Croix de Chevrières de Saint-Vallier. [1] The celebration was abolished in 1744 by Bishop de Pontbriand because he felt the celebrations were out of hand for good church people, but his efforts weren't successful. The celebrations were continued even after Québec became occupied territory, forcibly amalgamated into Canada. The celebrations were interrupted in 1837 after the rebellion against the Canadian regime was put down, but restarted again in 1843 and have continued since.

St John's Day used to be a holiday in France as well, since 1801.

Cakes and Ale Day is a yearly event held in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
A man named Jenkyn Smith (aka "Jankeyns Smythe") died in 1481, leaving money to St Mary's Church, which was part of the Abbey of St Edmund.
His will directed that the money be used for a mass for himself, and to treat people living in the poor house to cakes and ale. The first celebratory mass was held the next year in 1482

1 pint Fresh strawberries, hulled
2 cups Watermelon -- seeded, cubed
1/3 cup Sugar
1/3 cup Vodka
1/4 cup Lemon juice
2 cups Ice cubes

St Martha's Day
29 July

The 29th of July is the Feast Day of St Martha of Bethany, the Patron Saint of Cooks.
Poor Martha, often depicted with a broom, often gets a raw deal.
She lived in the village of Bethany, 2 miles (3 km) from Jerusalem with her sister Mary and brother Lazarus. In the Bible, she was the one scurrying around the kitchen, doing all the work to get a meal on the table (at a time when 1 cup of flour mean grinding it yourself first.) In the end, she got reprimanded for speaking up about her sister Mary just sitting around, while Martha was doing all the work -- Mary didn't even offer to chop so much as an onion.
How many times have male preachers told us we should be more like Mary -- and you've thought, easy enough to say when you're a man and your meals magically appear on the table. As blasphemous as this is to say, if you were Mary, wouldn't you have wanted to tell the lot of them to clear out of your kitchen if they weren't going to help? Or that fine, you'd stop working, but they'd better hope that "take-out falafels" get invented in the next few hours, because they were going to want them by suppertime.
Martha has also been tasked with looking after butlers, dietitians, innkeepers, and waitresses.
Legend has Martha, Mary and Lazarus travelling to the south of France in a boat -- without oars or sails -- afterwards, where they spent the rest of their lives. There, she reputedly saved the town of Tarascon by lasooing a dragon with her girdle and leading it away from town.
