That entire play was happening because the Leafs constant inability to clear the zone. It happened constantly through games 1-4 and the Leafs were solid for games 5 and 6 and the first 2 periods of game 7.
Once they scored and Boston pushed the Leafs folded. They do not have a good system to fall back on and that is coaching.
Their PP and PK were horrible this series which is coaching.
Also Keefe's comments after the series were awful.
In saying this the rot of this Org goes higher and deeper
1) Fire Shanny
2) Fire Keefe and all assistants
3) Tre gets the benefit of the doubt but I lean toward a clean slate
4) Marner and Lily moved out
5) Robertson moved out
6) Resign Bert and Domi if Reasonable money

8) Lubuskin can stay or go depending on other FA available(I say let him go)
9) Let Brodie and Gio Walk
10) Sign/Acquire Top D (Pechse,Hronek,Montour)
11) Sign/Acquire Mid D (Walker,Carier,Druzi,Cole)
12) Sign/Acquire good 2 line center
13) Sammy walks
14) Get a 1B goalie and see what Woll can give (I think Woll might be frail)
10-12 could be supplemented by the trading of Marner, Lily and Robertson
Moving MM & taking on PLD is already a gamble. I’d seek more on the cheap like I said in Clarke. Even that package is risky as CC said. A 3rd team taking on 8yrs cap will be costly. - Nighthawk

This is a ridiculous take. Was Sammy good? No. Could our boys maybe ONCE strap it on and perform in an elimination game? No.
To lay the blame entirely on the goalie because he didn't pitch an overtime game 7 shutout is ridiculous.

exactly... Sammy wasn't great - Woll was for those 2 games - who knows if he would have been as good for a third straight game.
One thing is for certain - the powerplay was both completely ineffective and a momentum killer. Nylander missed the first few of the series and clearly needed a game to get back going. Then Matthews missed time. The only constant on the powerplay was Marner getting the puck on the half wall - when hey actually managed to get into the zone - which was rare - and then going there to die.
sadly, I think the only way out of this mess in the short term is Tavares getting the same physical problem as Mark Stone has... ie. LITR for most next year. And Marner being told in no uncertain terms that he will NOT be on Matthews line when 2024/25 begins.
You can't expect to win if you can't score on the powerplay - not possible. And the unwillingness on the part of the coaching staff to mix it ... seals the fate of Keefe for me.
What I really wonder about is - did Marner simply refuse to play because he wasn't on Matthews wing when he came back from injury?

Trading MM for PLD would be so stupid. At this point PLD is very negative value. MM still has some value at least to a team that has the cap space.
MM being basically a rental at this point unless they sort out a sign and trade his value isn't going to be as high as people think. If the leafs can even just get a decent player back with a cap hit of around $5-6m I think that will help.
Tre did ok but I think Domi is the only guy he signed who might stay (besides Reaves who’s signed for two more years). I have a feeling that Max might want to finish his career as a Leaf and would sign for $3.5M or something. Edmundson and Boosh are great for what we’re paying (big $ retained) but will likely be too much/not worth it in the free agent market.
I’m much more interested in seeing how much it will cost to extend McCabe. We’re paying $2M of his $4.
I’d also get into the Broissoit bidding. If he’s at all affordable, I’d pick him up. There are also some interesting possible Bertuzzi replacements coming up this year - DeBrusk is one. - Canada Cup

I’d be ok with that. We know what the needs are, it’s mostly a question of sequencing. If the legit top six winger is available at affordable this year, grab him. If the right D guy comes up this year, go that way first. If we’re talking a legit #1 RD, Marner/JT might have to come off the books first and I don’t see that happening this summer. If they can get the right guy discounted as you suggested - cool.

I don't think it would involve Marner. Parayko was rumoured to 'maybe' be available around the deadline ..if true then it's probably the Blues looking to re-set by selling off some vets for prospects/picks.
Leafs have ~17M to spend ...they can afford Parayko in the Cap and still add some other modest pieces if they went that route.
Maybe the wait for July 1 to see if Pesce, Skjei, Montour, etc ...hit the market. Or maybe they don't like waiting and go out and grab a guy like Parayko (if available). - The Law
That’s an option but lots of players needed to fill in the roster is left. Need cheap ELC’s to make the team like Minten for starters. 2025 JT off the books is huge. If not Parayko then save on assets & Pesce or Montour could be had. Montour has the tax advantage in Florida to overcome. Pesce is an American & never know if they’ll sign in Canada. That said either would be a great add imo.

McCabe has been a great fit indeed. Priority signing for sure. Broissoit is a nice target & maybe the best available. Backing up Helly he’s underrated. Might be cheaper than Ullmark be my guess.
