Do they still employ Dave Brown or did they finally chuck him to the side? - Phillywhiteout
They may have redefined his role so he can't continue to (frank) up but will still get a paycheck -- Flyers way |

i can agree to disagree, i think his drafting was awful. How many 1st round picks did he use, and what was the outcome of those 1st round picks? How many 1st line players did he draft with all those 1st round picks? - bradster
He got Sanheim, Provorov, TK, Frost and Farabee as hits with his first rounders. Duds were Rubtsov, Patrick and JOB. If you look at other NHL a a whole there are tons of first rounders who don't end up as NHL regulars. Even a great team like Tampa take plenty of duds.
he also got three NHL goalies outside the first round |

Hextall was far from awful. He drafted several NHL caliber players and he rightfully shut out the alumni. He deserves a pass just for that.
His cardinal sin was not stripping it to the studs when he was first hired. - StepfordSam
drafting several nhl players with all the picks he had, isnt what i would call a success.. He had many bad decisions

I don't care about Bonk, although it is classic Flyers to draft a RH dman for need after trading for two of them, but the fact is Briere's moves so far have been very similar to Hextall's.
Seeler is his Schultz
Johansen is his Lehtera - Feanor
Ok and I agree Briere has been very much like Hextall so far. What I don’t understand is the people who liked Hextall and still defend him are the ones killing Briere when they have been very similar except it looks like Briere had a better first draft. |

His picks were not all that bad:
2014 - Sanheim
2015 - Provy and TK
2016 - Rubstov
2017 - NP and Frost
2018 - Farabee and JOB

I'm not killing Briere. I also wouldn't say anything concrete about his first draft yet outside it was great Arizona passed on Michkov. |

From your perspective what were the issues with Hextall's drafting? |

I don't think anyone is killing DB. Just b/c folks don't agree with everything the Flyers do it is "hating." It's ridiculous...

so a draft and develop strategy that hextall preached gained us zero difference makers. I give props to grabbing TK, and farabee. Well done. forgot the trading up to get ratcliffe. If he wasnt always preaching draft and develop it might be easier for me to take.

Bill in your opinion does TK get the ext or is he traded? - hello it's me 2050
My opinion is that they won't be offered what they'd consider enough to pull the trigger and he gets the big extension. |

#12 and TK to move up 6 spots...
That's steep. - Glak18
Oh yeah you'd be right if that was straight up...and it might have to be! But i was suggesting there would have to be something coming back (might have to be a 3rd or something or a B prospect) but remember NO ONE drops out of the top 10 these days.
This is just a scenario it might happen due to a "bias for action" on Utah's part

That is my fear as well. I will reserve judgment for the time being but right now this "New Era" is really just looks like a marketing campaign. They don't have the player assets to get anyone with elite talent. Frost, Farabee, TK etc. are not bringing back players that will move the needle much. They have draft picks, but again, are they picks that teams will give up elite talent? No.
They are stuck in a perpetual loop of meh. We have one top prospect in Matvei M. I feel like they are relying on luck and that is concerning. - Flyfly
My fear is that we (this forum) are going to be right about this team and how the path management chose was absolutely the worst path to take. |

And if that guy is Staal quality then what? I don’t understand the outrage over missing out of a 3rd rd pick. Not trading Laughton I get because presumably he is worth a late first but passing up a 3rd rounder to hopefully stabilize a guy you hope turns into something. Seems like hating just to hate. - psuhockey
its not just about the pick it is about the flyers doing predictable flyers things.
They need to find JD a legit 2nd pair dman to help him, not a guys forced into that role because the flyers suck.
no hate at all just calling it as it is, incompetence. Dont fall in lo with players someone high up in the flyers once said. |

the saint ronnie felating is hysterical. He was a below average GM. Why is that hard for many to say? |

That NP, while obviously perhaps not his fault, is IMHO one of the greatest reasons this team is in a bad spot. |

His drafting overall was average at worst. The Flyers highest skilled player was taken late in the first round by Hextall. Imagine this team without TK. - Feanor
yes lets as they would be in pretty much the same spot they are in today |

or not being smart enough to sell off and rebuild as you were not gonna win that core as it wasnt good enough. |

dude, the first part of the post you responded to is UNDERSTANDABLE, tho i would give poop....
Patrick can't be thrown out. It's his biggest swing and miss. I was stoked at the time but....it's a miss.
Also JOB takes it all away |

The Flyers just gave 6.5M to a 7th round pick. That third had potential to be a good player or could have been used to move up in the draft. Resigning a shot blocking dman for the next 4 years with who at best should be slotted in a 5/6 role is not what rebuilding team would or should do |

Listen to this broadcasters round table podcast from today starting at the 15 minute mark where they discuss the Flyers power play. Boucher mirrors what I have posted numerous times about the power play, it's more about the players and how they collaborate with the coach versus just the coaching. Its an insightful discussion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U59REu1YkOo - jd250
It's always more about the players. That doesn't change that the coaching has not improved the PP or had the players on the PP exhibiting a discernible pattern of attack or any clear objective on the PP. That is coaching.

Michkov looks to be the only elite talent unless you believe in Zavgravin but how many elite talents does a team need to win a cup? Generally speaking most Stanley Cup winners have at least three guys who are hall of fame level or near hall of fame level with a bunch of depth. If Michkov is one and one of the goalies is two, the Flyers don’t need that much more if and it’s a big if they have built good depth in the system with high end support types like Foerster and York look like they may become. - psuhockey
The Flyers arguably need 4-5 all star to elite players just to get in the conversation.

Of course not - that is the easiest way to defend not trading him. They wont tell the public what it would take to move TK so the public never knows what the team wanted. They probably are expecting an offer that the Sabres got for eichel when it should be more along the lines what they got Giroux

When the plan is to draft and develop and you blow multiple high picks that don’t even sniff the NHL then you did not leave the franchise in a good position. - psuhockey
That's false. In 5 draft years, Hextall drafted 12 NHL players including 2 starting level goaltenders, a top line winger, various 2nd line players and two top 4 defenseman. What was missing that brings the drafting down was adding an elite player. In all aspects, Hextall left the team in a better spot than when he started. |
