I don't think you're getting some massive haul for Marner in this situation. Pittsburgh would know this is kind of a salary dump/team shakeup, but they are also getting a good asset. I would think a lot of players would want out of a situation if they know they aren't part of the long term plans of the team. I'm not sure though, I'm not a GM. This is all speculation.

In this situation, Dubas is getting Marner for two extra years VS signing him as a UFA, what that works out to in compensation is the $13M question.

It's like half of the guys on here don't remember the Lanny McDonald trade.

It haunted the team for two decades.

Have we?

I'm wracking my brain trying to think of an example.

I recall one happening a couple of years ago, but I can't actually think of it, and a quick googling shows up nothing.

If I'm Treliving (I'm not, but damn it would be great, because I'd eat for free at Boston Pizza) I make minor moves this offseason, while having Leafs representatives attend every NHL celebrity golf tournament this summer.

At the turn, while casually munching a glizzy, said Leafs representatives sidle up to pre-determined NHL superstars who are becoming UFAs on July 1st, 2025, and let it be known that the Leafs will be using their newly found $21,903,000 in UFA money to go after them hard next summer.

As long as no Vancouver fans are in here reading this plan, it will work to perfection.

Bolded: I have that in my past! became a kitchen supervisor for them back in my days at Mohawk college. I basically lived off the stuff for three years and the boss didn’t mind because I cut the majority of the staff early as hell (he even gave me hip tickets as a gift once)

As for the rest I get what you’re saying… truly curious to see what happens this summer if the leafs don’t find their game. Hate to say it tho, I think Nylander landed his contract because they don’t want to keep Marner but only due to what his cost will be on his next contract…. It will be way too high for a non physical winger regardless of his skill.

Thank you, I knew there was a couple of examples.

Not Jeff Carter.

And in both cases, it was after the existing contract was up - so the compensation was much, much lower.

Meaning we would keep Marner next year.

Let's be realistic here.

Putting Marner on the 4th line next year - when we are most certainly NOT in a rebuilding year - would last for exactly one regular season loss.

The media and fans would go franking berserk.

This would never, ever happen.

- Atomic Wedgie

If Marner doesn’t want to go, he won’t. The Blazing Saddles, shoot the sherif strategy won’t work and Marner hasn’t shown he’s worried about what fans think. The only possible reason is if there’s a team where he’d be interested in signing an 8 year deal after a trade.

Marner for McDavid - double 8-year sign-and-trade.

m'eh let's hope none of this matter and Marner finds his game and helps lead the Leafs to a deep run.

AND JT comes back for way cheaper than anyone thought he would (or he walks).

AND Marner agrees to a VERY small raise.

They could maybe use the money freed up from JT to start to build around the 'core 4' of AM, Willy, Mitch and Moe essentially moving JT from that core group - at least as it relates to salary.

I'm not sure if that would give the Leafs enough $ to actually build what they need which is another top 2 D man (preferably a stud #1 D man to play with Moe) and maybe some goaltending help.

They seem to have done a good job at the bottom 6 forwards IMO - not sure if there is an opportunity to be better in the bottom 6 forwards or if it's needed.

They have 14M coming off the books next year with Murray/Muzzin and Klinberg all as UFA's.
- Cush29

That money is technically coming off the books, but they already spent it with those players on LTIR, no?

Don't harsh my mellow with facts man. lol

But you may be right - math isn't my most enjoyable pastime.

So that bit of mathematic - ing I did made no sense and is flawed.

I'll try it this way for next year:

Just Shy of 56M tied up in 10 forwards as follows:

Matthews
Marner
JT
Nylander
Kampf
Jankrok
Reeves
Knies
Holmberg
McMann

Just shy of 13M on D for:

Moe
McCabe
Timmons
Benoit
Cade Webber

$766 k in Goal for:

Woll

So a total of about 70M (rounded up) tied up so 17M (the remainder between the cap - projected to be just shy of 87 M and 70M) with the following holes to fill:

1 x 1A / 1B goalie (Sammy / Sammy replacement)
1 x 3rd string goalie (stick with something in the system already maybe?)
5 x wingers in Bert and Domi (Dewar, Robertson and Gregor)
4 x D men - mostly bottom pair guys and maybe one that is top 4 in Lilly?

Yikes!

Hes still injured and was at over a ppg player prior to injury.....and ppg in the playoffs up until this year. I doubt he gets traded. But who knows.
Not his best playoffs, but honestly, it hasnt been any leafs best playoffs yet, Matthews has had one great game.

- Fakepartofme

So what are you offering him? More than nylander?

Giordano is the all time NHL leader in blocked shots and he can’t break this incredible D core

What a joke

- mr.sir

You don't put Brodie in to fix the D. You pull Lily and move Edmundson to the RHD. Or bring Timmins in to play on the RHD.

Gio, Edmundson or Edmundson, Timmins would do much better than Lily or Brodie ever seeing the ice again when the Leafs goaltending is a disaster.

Woll/Sammy....6 of 1, half a dozen of the other.
