Also forgot to post how "Leafy" the Oilers were last night.
Give up 2 early goals and look bad.
Storm back and tie up the game forcing it to OT only to lose in OT.
Do you think Edmonton fans call things like that being "Oily"? |

I think so as well.
I think they run it all back with a new coaching staff....unless the leafs get to the 3rd round. - Fakepartofme
Lets be honest, as much as I want to see what Tre can get for Marner, he's for all intents and purposes unmovable. He'll be back next year, and I'm fine with this. But it better be with an entirely new coaching staff.

Unless this team hits the semi finals at the very least playing a different style this better be Keefe’s last year. My curiousity will be if Boucher lands the job.
As for the players if Marner gets a long term deal as well I’ll start thinking it’s time for Shanny to go because I’ll be under the impression the GM is just his task worker. - Dozzer
Id be surprised if boucher got the gig....the whole staff needs to go. Special arent as special as they should be with this talent.
But we'll see. |

It would be nice to have a Canadian team in the 2nd round.
Sigh. |

After watching his success with the special teams, who in their right mind would think he's a suitable candidate to run the show?!? - Whipper
Ew gross - hard no to Boucher.
Maybe it's time to follow Buffalo's lead and welcome back a former Leaf coach.
"Hey Paul (Maurice) it's Shanny wanna' come back & coach in Toronto"?
"Hello? Paul? Are you there? All I hear is a dial tone....."
Hangs up.
"Who is next on the list?"
"uh Ron W"
"God dammit - ok"
"Hey Ron it's Shanny..........."

Imagine if Boucher keeps getting “private” meetings with Shanny and Tre tho… and they only last half a minute because it’s just Boucher saying “wtf are your dumbasses thinking?” |

I guess it would be super interesting to you to see fans of a playoff team discussing hockey - I mean it would certainly be more interesting than talking about what driver the Philly captain is using on the first tee and all.

Yeah… that’s what Keefe needs to be drilling into their core’s head right now… stop expecting space, embrace playing without it, take the soreness and bruises on as a f’n gift, and use your talent in that kind of game.
If their core continues to look for space I’m guessing this round won’t last long for the leafs sadly.
It does bring up a question as well tho… would a different coach be all the core needs? One who tells them to stop this fancy assed poop or be sat? I sincerely don’t know. - Dozzer
No one knows, but I am of the opinion that a new coach would. In some ways I used to think that leadership didn't really matter - the players played and you got what you got - but how many times have we seen a coaching change also bring out character changes in players? Like Sam Bennett sucked his way out of Calgary and found new style and life in Florida under Quenneville, Brunette and Maurice. Sam Reinhart doubled his point totals and became a 30+ goal scorer moving to Florida under the same coaches.
Now a new coach could bring in different styles, philosophies, approaches, faceoff plays and so on. That can obviously make a difference. In New York you can see that Roy's style has the Islanders trying to attack more in the neutral zone and take away clean zone entries - and there's a marginal improvement there - but that improvement added probably about 8 points to their expected standings.
There's also culture and the leadership in the room. I've come to believe that these are instilled by the management of the team - starting with the Owner, GM and coaches. It permeates through the room into all the players - that's the change that a new coach can bring.
I don't like Keefe's systems - although if I were such an expert at hockey I'd be doing something with it instead of sitting here avoiding work rambling about it - but I don't think he has instilled a winning culture or a team identity that moves the needle.

I'm still not sold that he's unmovable. He has 1 year left - he can choose to stay and play it out - he was given that option in his contract . . but he could also get an 8 year extension negotiated in the offseason as a part of a sign & trade to a destination of his choosing and it's possible that team would want him. If we express that he just isn't coming back and we won't be offering him a contract, maybe he'll want to choose to move to his new destination.
Granted maybe a new coaching staff can establish a system and mentality that gets this team to play less passive perimeter hockey.

Same for all of us on your last part… cept work for me atm sadly… I actually miss those days
But yeah… if the leafs don’t make the semis this year the coaching HAS to change… and if I was ownership I’d start wondering if Shanny needs to go as well. It’s a wait and see thing we’re in the middle of sadly.
But yeah you’re nailing it… is this the players or the coach? I’m no big fan of Keefe atm but the marlies played tougher under him and the current core of the leafs were basically the same under Babcock but younger. So who is the true problem? The players or a coach who recognizes it, doesn’t get Shanny to make the changes they would love to have, so they try to adapt but there’s no true way.
If the leafs don’t get to the semis I damn well hope ownership steps in and starts making notable changes. Seriously… (frank) Shanny and go get Wendel to take it on or some poop. |

Leafs have a lot of players that like winning, but they don't have enough that DESPISE losing. This is 100% a culture problem. What did Marner say a while back after the Leafs had an embarrassing loss, something like "we're playing great hockey?" WTF, we need to bring in a coach and some players that'll light a fire under this team and change the culture of "we tried gud."

going to the dirty areas....not sure this team can do it constantly, not the top 6 anyway. - Symba007
How far from the net were the scorers on the two goals last night? Bert, Knies, JT and Matthews all score from in tight. (Matthews scores from everywhere.). The problem has been the distributors.
Domi wasn’t good last night and Marner again wasn’t good. The Matthews line won their play in game 2. They didn’t last night.
I’ve moved away from the Nylander to line 3 perspective. They need to load up so at least one line can create offence.
Plus, refs suck |

As he should be. Even if they get bounced in round 2 he probably gets fired. |
