Would people compared Marner to Panarin in there style of play?

Panarin is doing good. If Marner turns out to be more like Panarin that would be a good thing , no???

Bruce,

I really feel like you’re trying to start a Marner vs Nylander argument.

I want Willy back in the lineup. I think he’ll help the team.

But to say Marner isn’t good is bizarre. He’s an incredible player. The Leafs haven’t had a player like him in a longtime. Every year he dominates. His defence is also very good. Good players make risky plays, and he’s no exception.

I think it’s borderline bullying the way some people treat him. It’s gone too far. That’s a big reason why I’m a tad defensive of him.

- Arctic_AARDVARK

He's definitely a special player. Not many elite playmakers playing on the PK.

It's not easy to score almost 100 points every year.

And one of the reasons he's not a fan favourite is his maneurisms. His attitude with the press and the holier than thou approach.

I think public sentiment started to change during the presser after losing to the Habs.

They asked if he or they needed to do anything different. He was defiant, said not at all. That they played great and just didn't get the breaks.

That was a while ago now, and he was still a younger player in the league. Many felt he was too cocky and disrespectful of his place on the team and his responsibilities.

He continues to be salty and pushing back when anyone tries to put expectations on him or others on the team.

Ya, Toronto media is tough. And I'd probably lose it too once in a while. But it seems to be something he'll double down on rather than accept responsibility.

And none of the core appear to take any home team discount except maybe Reilly. The take every penny along with every benefit of being a Leaf. Like 90% of your salary in bonuses etc...

And when they can't go to the next level and lesser teams continue to beat them like Columbus, Montreal etc... fans will turn on you. Especially when you don't own up to it. And unfortunately, he's the one who seems to deflect the most.

Except that Kane upped his game in the playoffs, more than anyone on the team.

True, that seemed to be the case with him and toews.
But i haven't seen any core star on this team "up" their game in the playoffs so far..
Except morgan last year, for 1 round

I don’t understand the Leafs core. Kane is a smallish player who elevates his game when the game gets tougher in the playoffs.
Reilly was good last playoffs but your number one d should be good, it shouldn’t be a pleasant surprise.
So far in their careers our top players have been ok at best.

I really like Marner. He's a very skilled passer and has been better than a point a game in every season except his first two. That said, there are elements of his game which could be corrected by proper coaching. Back-passes especially in the defensive zone are generally not a good idea and he is regularly guilty of this act. Lack of physicality can also be coached. Nylander has improved significantly in this area this season. The high skill player I look to as an example is Pastrnak. He's not big, he's as skilled as any Leaf except Matthews IMO, yet he hits and is a dirty (frank). That's coaching. In the offensive zone, looking for the perfect pass is a regular problem. If it's not there, float one at the net an hopefully it bounces in off someone's ass. My biggest concern is how butt hurt will Marner (and his dad) be when Tree offers him less than Nylander is making?
- winsix

First off, you can't coach a player into being a dirty (frank). You either are that way or you're not. Marner, Matthews, Tavares and Nylander are all passive. They're never going to be Pastrnak or Kucherov type personalities. Stop waiting for it.

Secondly, Marner will not go north-south with speed in the playoffs. He curls, zigzags, cuts back, stuck on the perimeter. He doesn't like contact. He has the puck a lot, sure, but is non threatening in the playoffs because the middle of the ice is occupied. This is not coaching, it's a long track record of who he is, and how he cannot adapt.

Lastly, why are you concerned about how Mitch and his (frank)ing dad respond to a contract offer? He's overpaid, and they should consider moving on from him.

Matthews put the team on his back for stretches against Tampa, Willy stepped up too and had some big goals when they were needed.

The lengths people to go to be a Marner apologist are absurd, his lack of showing up ever does not have to be an everyone else issue. It's about him.

Here’s how I sum up the Marner and Willy controversy. My opinion only of course.
Let’s pretend they’ll both have the same salary.
Would I trade Willy straight up for Mitch?

Not a chance.

But, I am happy they are both Leafs…I think.

Something is amiss, no doubt.
If they lose this round, poops gonna’ fly, as it should.

As much as I like Marner he plays like a nervous rookie in the playoffs. By now he should be dominating when he’s out there.

What poop can fly?

Tavares has a full NMC, Willy will on July 1st as well. Marner has full trade protection up until he's UFA. Matthews does as of now and has full NMC on his new deal kicking in July 1st as well.

The only guy who can even be traded is Willy for a couple months, and the optics of slipping in a trade on a guy who just signed a max term deal make that a likely impossibility.

Dubas was about to make poop fly and got the boot. Treliving came in and made sure it was near impossible for poop to ever fly, but got more grit. 🤷

I don’t see it. I think they both leave game on the table. Points not being everything of course.
Mitch
51gp - 47 points
Willy
50gp - 40 points

I think Mitch places too much pressure on himself.
Willy shows us a little more of what he can do, sometimes.
Bottom line, both are very important to their playoff success, and both aren’t reaching their full potential, for whatever reason.

Here’s to seeing them both rise to the occasion vs Bahston.

Not really.
Matthews and marner had a great 1st round, willie was ok, he was non existent the final two games against tampa and the first two against Florida. Marner had multi point games in the first 5 games of the series. Your hate is clouding your memory. Morgan was a beast.
