Just as a fan I’m frustrated, I think the leafs are overplaying and overcomplucating the market with keeping it quiet.
Or they are just scared of Jim Montgomery. - Santo_44
Keeping a back injury quiet makes sense too. If he gets back in you know the Bruins are going to chase him around and finish checks.
I keep the lineup the same too. Home teams are 6-0 ...Leafs are fine. Leafs win 3-2 tonight if they bring the same intensity and structure, stay away from dumb penalties, get another save from Sammy, and the big boys need to finish.
It was a 2-1 game at 5v5. Flip that around and don't (frank) up on special teams.

1 of those 5v5 goals shouldn't even have been in - that Carlo goal sucked. I also didn't like one of the DeBrusk goals on the PP very much. Samsonov doesn't do enough to fight through the screen. You get caught leaning or peeking that's fine - but doing nothing at all when you're screened is far worse in my opinion. Boston isn't even that big or good at screening the goalie, so if they can't deal with this now, it's only going to get worse.

The Leafs scored one goal.
One.
If that isn’t dealt with it doesn’t matter who they have between the pipes.
This has been their playoff demise far more frequently than goaltending for way too long now.
Looking back at the playoff runs we all loved (92/93 and the early 2000’s) they sure as poop weren’t winning games 1-0.

I'm on the record as not liking the Carlo goal - way too much net and very stoppable. The Debrusk goal was off the post and in ..I'm not blaming Sammy on that one. The second Debrusk goal was a tough one to lay blame but I thought he could have had the pass across his crease. He reached but he whiffed with his stick. Tough one but frankly those were battles that Swayman was winning on the other end.
That being said ...our shooters have to win some battles with Swayman.
Yeah exactly. I remember Hedman missing game 1 last year and then the rest of the series he was off…so I do get it to an extent but he played all 82 and the last 2 back to back?
Like what could have possibly gone wrong for him to not play? Like every game multiple players get crushed with huge hits and cross checks and slashes…half the team has something tweaked by game 3.
I’ve decided I’m angry about it, he should be playing. - Santo_44
be angry for no reason.
why play if you make it worse than it is. if he's not 90~100% then you sit him.
yes it will hurt the team but him playing doesn't help the team as well.
Just saw that at the leafs optional practice yesterday SIX players showed up and one of them was Nylander! so much for team spirit and unity huh! BOO YEAH!
Just based off what I the fan have seen why the (frank) isn’t he playing?
I mean I got one of my worse concussions standing up and hitting my head off a low ceiling so it’s possible it’s something like that.
Just frustrating and sitting at home with the information we have he should be in. And you know what Keefe isn’t giving any injury updates so it’s fair for fans to be frustrated. - Santo_44
oh come on eh!!!
this is playoff time when the info is kept close to their chest.
you might hear them fart from them, that how tight they are with info.

Weak goaltending affects the offense too. Winnipeg isn't anywhere near as dynamic if they don't trust Hellebuyck. Edmonton regained their swagger when Skinner found his game - so they could and score and trust that he was going to bail them out when they inevitably (frank)ed up.
We have had inconsistent moments of that all year.
This is not to say that the offense would be lighting the lamp if Sammy were Haseking it up - I find that they don't crash the crease, don't make the other goalie uncomfortable, don't screen the goalie enough and mostly stand the side or very high looking for a tip or deflection. Again, this team's offense is built around doing the easy things well and not bothering to do the hard things. Is it the players or is it the coaching systems? I don't know for sure but we've seen guys go to Florida or Tampa or Winnipeg and suddenly change their game and start doing the hard things well when they used to only do the easy things. Sorry. I'm trying not rant about how much I hate our coaches - but the systems being deployed or executed by this team are not going to work in the playoffs when it gets hard.
So, no - one goal doesn't matter. But soft goals against really do. So we can, in my opinion, lay blame at both of their feet and tell them both to f'n do better.

Hellybuck gave up 6 yesterday and had an .870 save %.
That being said comparing Hellybuck to Sammy (or Woll for that matter) is comparing a Porche 911 to a Ford Fiesta. Both are vehicles that get you from A to B but one costs a (frank) of a lot more than the other and as such SHOULD peform a hell of a lot better than the other.
Again 1 goal scored.
Soft goals against don't take away goals your team scores nor should they impact scorers not doing what they are paid to do.
I saw zero evidence in game 1 that the Leafs were holding back offensively because they didn't trust Sammy.
The scoring, discipline of not taking stupid penalties and being more aware and not making ill timed pinches etc. all need to improve much more than the goaltending needs to improve IMO.
And yes, the goaltending needs to improve but it wasn't why they lost game 1.
