I made the same argument yesterday, he may not get nominated. at least thats how the lists have trended. but upper 60's in goals, may force him to the top 3..no matter how bad they dont want to do it

Quick Tampa magic number update: 5

Tampa and the Leafs each have 5 games remaining.

If Tampa goes 5-0, the Leafs only have to go 2-2-1 to clinch.

Florida's magic number to beat the Leafs: 7

- Atomic Wedgie

I don't think Tampa does it. It's good for Tampa that their game is rounding into form at the right time. The new acquisitions are settled in pretty well. Vasi seems to be finally regaining most of his pre-surgery form. That bodes well for the playoff run, but it's too little too late to take 3rd in a stacked division.

The gap between Kucherov and the 2nd highest scorer on Tampa is pretty impressive

Kuch is 7 assists away from 100. He can technically get there. He might get 100 assists and he already has 40 goals on the season. That's not being talked about enough.
- Aaron_85

Kuch's epic season has been largely overshadowed by what an bumhole he is.

He's not well liked by the players, the media, or the fans (outside of Tampa). It's hard to root for the guy unless you drink the tasty Tampa koolaid.

Doesn't matter. It's politics and Mac "needs" the win.

How on earth is everyone not rooting for 69 here?

That would be nice.

People don't like him? Guy literally set a record in the U18's and the MHL and was rewarded with a 2nd round choice. Moved to Canada to realize his dream and fight the stink of the KHL forever news. Paid his dues in the AHL and never complained. Comes to the NHL and is potentially going to be a 2 time Art Ross winner who kills it in the playoffs and is a mental case Bud Light drinking bastard.

Agreed, they should have nothing but these behind the plate to keep fans engaged

I don't think its that he is not liked.

He just seems like he has a really bad temper. It is really easy for players to make him angry.

They should do that in the 9th inning to keep people from leaving their 1K seats to beat traffic.

Call me a blue Kool-Aid chugger, but if Matthews gets a few more, I think you have to give him the Hart Trophy.

He's doing something that has only been by the elite of the elite.

Let's say he gets to 68.

The only other guys who have done that are:

Gretzky, Hull, Lemieux, Mogilny, Esposito, Selanne, Kurri, Bernie Nichols, Bossy.

And there are fancy stats to show that what he is doing is probably top 3 of all time, when adjusted for era.

- Atomic Wedgie

If Matthews gets 70 goals and those 2 guys both get 100 assists would’ve it seem more difficult to get 70 then it is to get a 100? Considering 2 guys do it in one year?

Couldn't care less about awards that are voted by a collection of random opinions and biases.

Art Ross and Rocket Richard are the legit trophies.

Goals stats are almost always more impressive than assists IMHO. Heck, you can get a secondary assist for touching the puck randomly 15 seconds before a goal.

Counter point, you can pass the puck across the crease, bank it off Savards skate and get credited with a goal.

or you can be a PP specialist who racks an insane amount of pts on the PP but you are just OK at 5 on 5. Best player in the league award should not reward a PP specialist if that player is also not good at other part of the game like 5 on 5 and/or PK.

I don't think there is any player in the NHL right now that could get 70 goals other than Matthews.

I mean when there were like 9 games left he needed 9 goals and we were like "oh yeah thats very possible"

It is ridiculous that we consider a goal a game is likely.

Very good point. Empty net points are mostly useless too, that's what makes AMs feat all the more impressive. I think his first 58 or so were with a goalie in the net

65 goals in 76 games for AM

Ovy did it in 82, if you want to be technical he did it in 81 since he didnt score in game 82
