The hit willie took seem to have knocked him off his game. - Fakepartofme
I agree..
I think Willy is starting to find out now that he’s engaging more on the physical side of things, he’s being targeted more.
Not a good sign that it got him off his game.
You can see Tavares say something to him on the bench right after the hit. |

I backed that up and pointed those out to my wife last night. All she said was poor girl, she’s going to have to do something about those eventually…lol. - Woderwick
I think she's already done something about those, which is why we're talking about it.

I think he adds absolutely nothing to the Leafs, and every night he's in the lineup, he's taking a spot from someone who might actually contribute.

Reaves can help to knock people off their games.
But ultimately the winners of each round will come down to whos stars were stars, who won the special teams prize and goaltending.
Same as usual.
Although goals from the 4th line help as well. - Fakepartofme
For me the 'success' of a guy like Reaves counts on two things happening ..
1. He's not a detriment when on the ice. Plays tough and doesn't cost you anything; and
2. The rest of the team plays with a little more confidence. Intimidation is still a factor in hockey. It doesn't make the other team weak but it makes them a little more honest. TBay and Florida usually take a lot of post-whistle liberties with the Leafs to get them off their game ...I don't think you see it as much when Reaves is at his best (and he's been there since Janaury).
So I agree that stars, 'tending, and special teams are the formula but the theory is those things all improve with him playing 5-10 minutes of confident 4th line hockey.
I mean if he lays the body on Hedman or Ekblad once or twice a night you're already getting value in a potentially long and gruelling series. |

He was terrible early, like epicly terrible. But the last little while he's been great and is exactly what we need on our 4th line headed into the playoffs.

Agreed.
Hes a 4th liner making 1.35m per. Hes there to muck it up and not cost us goals. |

It's crazy that Tampa is near the bottom of the league 5 on 5 but could make the playoffs based on their #1 PP.

So you dislike the physical brand of hockey he brought last night?
I would take last nights Ryan Reaves over anyone they sat as a healthy scratch all day every day. That’s what they need for playoffs - what he does in fact add when he plays hockey the way he can and did last night. |

Dangerous game to play - living or dying by your PP heading into playoffs.
See Oilers, Edmonton.
Then again the Leafs PP lately doesn’t inspire confidence if they don’t get it clicking for playoffs. |

Reaves has been playing good hockey.
Threw some great hits and has given that line energy.
Quit holding grudges. Bertuzzi and Reaves are good pieces for this hockey team now, get over it. |

I really thought Reaves' fight turned the game around.
I mean, we were losing 3-1 at the time.
And the final score was 4-1.
Thank goodness he had a meaningless fight that did nothing other than waste our time.
We need to keep this guy in the lineup. - Atomic Wedgie
Don't worry, in the playoffs he'll keep the press box secure.

Did he poop in your garden or something?
Take the fight out of last night's game. Reaves was still a physical presence - hitting guys, winning battles, moving pucks and keeping them in deep. On the goal against it had nothing to do with Reaves and everything to do with our supposedly two best defensive players in Brodie and Kampf screwing up.
The Leafs need some guys who will go win board battles either to get the puck or keep the puck in deep. Reaves has been doing a very admirable job of that lately and I'm surprised you don't see it, too. Not many guys on this team get in and physically impose will - which Reaves has been doing effectively. He's not going to light up the scoreboard, but for $1.3 million on the 4th line, I want the puck in the other end as much as possible and I like the idea of wearing down the opposition.

Maybe, just maybe, now hear me out, when Reaves fought and pumped up the crowd and his teammates....the stars were kinda supposed to go out and score instead of not sucking and Woll was suppose to not let in another soft goal to deflate the situation?
Not sure.
I do know:
Stamkos didn't beat up Matthews again,
Bennet didn't body slam Knies again,
Thachuck didn't run Sammy again,
etc...
We get it AW, you don't like fighting. Cool. Understand.
I don't like having a hockey team play like a bunch of curlers wrapped in soft labia and getting female dog slapped all the time without any push back or retribution.
Reaves is worth his cheap salary and is a necessary evil to stop poopty players from taking liberties on our players. He's not taking dumb penalties, he's throwing some great hits, grinding in the OZone and then occasionally fighting. He's a good/cheap 4th liner. |
