Scary stat:

"...the fact that the ratings for Monday’s Iowa-LSU Final Four game featuring college basketball superstar Caitlin Clark of the the Hawkeyes drew a television audience of 12.3 million viewers.

By contrast, the average viewership for the 2023 Stanley Cup final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Florida Panthers was just 2.6 million viewers."

Every sport has idiots. Adoption is tricky and the money and viewership starts in a market of 350 million people down south, not up here.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: hockey can be one of the greatest spectator sports you'll ever see. What sold me when I was little was how fast and exciting it was - but also that I knew the rules. I am not kidding at all about that last part. Peter Puck taught me the rules and I knew them back and forth and it was easy - and I knew when a ref missed a call and it didn't happen 4 times a shift.

I firmly believe that while there are cultural limitations (lacrosse and hockey being conventionally "Canadian" sports), the problem that exists with the wide adoption of both lacrosse and hockey is the poor officiating that leads to confusion about what you're watching. It is very frustrating to be emotionally invested in a game that continually robs you of that investment in small ways. Refs make mistakes and always have - but now they make deliberate mistakes in order to manage the games. It's not discussed as game management in lacrosse, but the game is so poorly officiated if it's not incompetence or malice (both of which I sincerely doubt after having met some refs) it's intent.

Basketball is just known to give the stars all the calls, so in basketball just go get stars. It's a joke, but somehow it's okay to give the stars a different set of rules.

Football is interpretation. It could be better but they are pretty decent considering the amount of action that's happening and the number of players all interfering with each other in different ways at different times or simultaneously on the same play.

The other thing is that the US has a bizarre infatuation with college sports of all types. This one I don't watch any of so I just don't get.

Here’s how I see it.

The NHL has been trying to go head-to-head with other NA sports leagues, when really they should just focus on markets that already love the sport.

I believe in letting everything happen naturally instead of forcing it. Obviously Quebec City would be a more exciting franchise than Arizona. If NHL hockey is a great product, then it’ll start winning over sports fans in non-traditional markets. But instead fans in Arizona (and other markets) see it the way we see Lacrosse in Canada.

But since the NHL is beholden to the billionaire owners who see the league as a way to diversify their portfolios, the authenticity of the sport is tainted. It should be about the love of the game, not money.

My impression is that for billionaire owners, NHL teams are kind of like race horses they keep because they can.

Willy got his poop together, Alex is a rising star.

Woll sucks, Tarasov is probably better.

I don’t think that’s true if you look at franchise value instead of profits. According to Forbes, NHL franchises increased in value by an average 29% or $1.3B last year. Their money comes from the real estate and associated holdings. If they can break even or just lose $ slowly year over year they’re going to enjoy the increasing values. Also, owners get to write off a poop load of their expenses.
