Cates shouldn’t have been out there either.

The opening duo should have been Coots/TK followed by Frost/Tippett.

- BiggE

Laughton/Farabee would also have been a better choice than Poehling/Cates.

At this point they control their own destiny. They played admirably against tough teams. Now they need to take care of business. It would be nice to put together a string of non-OT wins. Take the terrible OT decisions out of Torts hands.

The Flyers this year are well above a mediocre team

They're 16th in a 32 team league.

How funny is it that the Flyers are actually a decent shootout team under Torts (6-4) but they rarely get that far because they're so incredibly bad in overtime.

Ersson seems really good at shootouts tbh. It’s weird to see

Any news on Poehling? Or is the memo hidden alongside the state secrets the Flyers handle?

That is a whole other (related) discussion. Coots has been playing three games in a row with Cates, why separate them then?
- MBFlyerfan

Tbh, it seems almost to the level of playing mind games with coots. It’s terrible and doesn’t make sense. How he’s on the 4th line getting 10 mins a night and supposed to snap out of the slump and increase his pace is beyond me. It’s basically the frost treatment.

Agreed. If this happens, torts will only send out two players in ot. Without his go to poehling, there’s no other option. SMH. Haha

Haha. Is it?? Really?

I still can’t wrap my head around the strategy.

The other thing is that that line has been very effective IMO.

Oh, I agree completely. The OT "strategy" is absolutely crazy. If they manage to get into a couple OT games and miss the playoffs he needs to be called out. Not that it will matter but the team needs all they points the can muster.

Agree. It’s so close they can’t afford to piss away points like they did vs Toronto and nyr. I mean when both times you get scored on very early and the other team generates more chances, maybe switch it up???

Ryan and Rasmus taking up a cool $11.35m on the cap to play 31 games combined this season.

And Drysdale has played 35 games over the past two seasons... maybe it's time to top trading for RHDs.

Jersey's heating up. They finally have decent goaltending.
- Tomahawk

Too little too late for Jersey. 5 pts out with only 9 games left is a lot to make up.

Honestly, I have a real problem counting OT losses as real losses and using it to artificially deflate the team's record to push forth a false narrative. OT is 3 on 3 which is not real hockey. And the shootout is even less real hockey. Sure, real hockey or not, OT and shootouts count as 1 additional standings point, but it's unfair to use OT losses as a basis to call a team mediocre.

The Flyers this year are well above a mediocre team and anyone who wants to say they are not have not been watching. The Flyers have stood toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the league and have beaten many of them. And even teams they have not beat, like the Rangers, they have been right there in most of the games. The Flyers are not an elite or top tier team in the league, but they are, at least to me, a 2nd tier team; a team that should be in the playoffs and a team that a top team would not be eager to play. It's been a good hockey season and no one should discount this.

- jd250

It's not a false narrative; when you count OT and shootout wins as wins, you must count losses in those situations as losses.

I’m very worried about drysdale long term when it comes to health. Unless he has surgery again they really works, I feel like the shoulder is going o pop out all the time. I’ve seen it before with guys I’ve played with. Hope they can fix it for good

I don’t think anyone can change Tort’s mind on virtually any subject. He’s as stubborn as they come.
- BiggE

I understand what Torts is thinking, either the Flyers get possession right off the bat and he can quickly get his offense on the ice, or if the Rangers get possession he has two good forwards that can defend and possibly get the puck back. But its not working, and thus changes need to be made. I still believe the best defense is a good offense, and I have full confidence that Frost, TK or Tippet have just as much of a chance to get the possession back as Poehling and Cates.

8 points and 3 teams to jump is way too many with 9 games left. For them to be an issue for us.
