while I agree, the Flyers as an org, decided to put Torts in the spotlight and the face of the franchise. Something I always found a little odd. - Flyfly
It’s makes a lot of sense to me. The Flyers are far away from being a legitimate contender. The only way to get there is thru the draft which is a long process if a team doesn’t tank and doesn’t rush their prospects. Why not keep Tortorella, who is a sideshow and appeals to a large part of the fanbase, as the face of the franchise to take all the love and hate while the rebuilding process goes on in the background? The Flyers remain in the spotlight and Briere can draft and develops the future. |

Are we looking for the coach to be a PR guy or to guide the team and coach the talent to talent to hopefully reach contender status. Let's also not forget, though some don't want to buy it, hockey wise, Tortorella is completely running the show. That's why it doesn't make sense.

You have no idea what is going on behind the scenes or in the minds of Briere, Hilferty and Jones. Saying Tortorella is running the show is pure speculation and is actually pretty nonsensical. He does have a big influence right now but no intelligent business man is turning over the long term health of a multimillion dollar organization to a soon to be 66 years old. |

I think signing Tippett to that long-term deal should be an indicator that TK gets dealt but we won't know until we know. I agree I'd like to see TK moved after this season.
It's also possible, right or wrong, that once they saw there was a chance to make the playoffs, that they put off a Laughton trade until the offseason to give him one last run with the team out of respect. - anti-lame
Any player can be traded. But if you choose to move your best player who’s in his prime it had better be one hell of a return. |

100%….yes he has his former players who love the man….but a lot of guys hate him and he could care less. Creating situations like this is an actual “tool” he uses to get to what he sees as optimum results. |

Context in order: Couturier has never -- once -- publicly complained about anything or made excuses in 13 years. Never threw a coach under the bus. Never complained about ice time when he was moved to the 4th line (which, BTW, makes it damn hard to do much offensively).
He actually HAD started to play better in 3 of his last four games, especially the win in Florida. Never said a word when Tortorella did the constant digs, damn with the faintest praise thing he does.... even though Tortorella unquestionably burned the candle at both ends on Couturier for his first 40 games this season, understanding the risk of hitting the wall in the second half but deciding there was no other choice.
Couturier didn't run the media. Like a man, he didn't duck when asked to speak. He allowed himself a minute of frustration and then turned the rest of what he said to pledging to keep working and not rocking the boat. He answered everything honestly, including that the HC hadn't told him anymore than the generic "needs to be better" stuff he told the media.
Yes, I know Tortorella loves confrontation. Yes. I know he will dig and prod and instigate until the player takes the reigns to initiate the actual discussion about EXACTLY what is wanted.
Every coach has his own methods. These are Tortorella's, like it or not. - bmeltzer
He didn't go running, buy mouth piece, his agent, did. Something? |

I was told the same thing when I correctly pointed out how the alumni was too involved in the Flyers operation behind the scenes. Turned out I was correct. Same here and its not difficult to figure out. Unless you're blind or just refusing to look. We're talking running the hockey team, not Comcast. Which makes your comment pretty non-sensical. Tortorella has both Jones and Hilferty in his back pocket. If your influence guides the team's direction, then you are running the team. The Flyers have hitched their wagon to Tortorella's brand of hockey and his antique ideas of culture, standards and his ancient brand of hockey. Tortorella is not some front man put forth to take the heat while the real bosses run the team behind the scenes. He is the lead dog, for now.

I like the way this group plays. Talent wise they need to. I think they do have more talent than I thought and I like the way some of the young guys have progressed. I don’t particularly love some of Torts methods but I don’t hate them as much as watching a team mail games in far to regularly over the last 10 years and no one seemed to be held accountable. |

For conversation, in terms of the Flyers mailing it in, not playing with effort, etc.
This season, under Tortorella, the Flyers currently have a .564 points percentage.
Under Dave Hakstol
15/16 .585
16/17 .537
17/18 .598
Alain Vigneault
19/20 .645
That's 3 seasons under two past head coaches where the Flyers had a higher points percentage that this season under Tortorella.
