Ohtani looks very guilty right now
His interpreter basically blamed it on Ohtani's lifestyle and said he had to do it to make ends meet while only making 85K a year.
Ohtani first said he had no idea he was taking funds.
No (frank)ing chance he didn't know.
There are 2 wires from his PERSONAL banking account directly to ILLEGAL bookies, that has been confirmed.
Ohtani could be suspended for the year. |

If it is confirmed by MLB and anything touched MLB betting, he could be banned for life.
I am 100% positive MLB doesn't want that to happen to their prized cash cow Dodgers, so everyone has the brooms out now and lifting carpets everywhere.

Its a wild story to follow.
One of the transfers was made while he was having his TJ too. There is an extremely low chance someone not even related to him could get 4.5M directly to a bookie
I really hope the hammer is laid down here, lets not pretend that other athletes aren't engaging in this sort of thing. It could become quite the problem over the next decade.
The annoying part is the MLB knows they can get away with a year without Ohtani while he isn't pitching. The most likely scenario here is he is banned for the year. Slap on the wrist. |

Let’s see if the interpreter is charged with stealing from Ohtani. If so, there will need to be evidence that Ohtani didn’t know. If not, it will suggest that something is up. I doubt MLB does anything quickly unless it’s pretty clear that Ohtani knew. |

What the heck is going on with Bert?!? They made it sound like he was being benched early last game, but Keefe thanked him by name for battling to play and there was Domi's comments too. Is he still battling the flu? - Whipper

Wow so easy. Uniqueness 7. I was afraid I might miss out with some of those late 70's Pens, early 70's Hawks or early 80s oilers |

Right? I thought going super old-timey on the Hawks would work - but Mikita is a 6% and Glenn Anderson on the Oil was a 5! After the Hawks cost me 10% and the Oilers 12%, I dug a bit deeper into the 70s Penguins to keep it respectable!

The most suspicious bits are that MLB were initially saying that they didn't need to do an investigation and considered the issue closed, meanwhile the Dodger lawyers are giving their static, "Nothing to say, nothing to see, let's all just move on," and Ohtani himself has said nothing at all. The league has since rescinded - likely from the public scrutiny involved.
If nothing else it's a massive optics problem - but the problem is that the timeline doesn't suit the stories. This has massive conflicts and coverup written all over it (taken verbatim from the internet, but it agrees with the information I've read elsewhere):
2024
Federal authorities began to investigate Mizuhara's gambling in January, according to ESPN, as they looked into Bowyer's bookmaking.
In records of the wire transfers, ESPN found the name "Shohei Otani" next to several bank accounts, as well as the word "loan."
Tuesday, March 19, 2024
Hoping to clear up the situation, Ohtani made Mizuhara available for a 90-minute interview to ESPN. Mizuhara reportedly told the outlet his story.
Mizuhara and Ohtani's spokesperson both said the same thing: that Ohtani had transferred money to clear Mizuhara's gambling debt in 2023. The debt had reportedly reached at least $4.5 million.
"Obviously, he [Ohtani] wasn't happy about it and said he would help me out to make sure I never do this again," Mizuhara told ESPN. "He decided to pay it off for me.
"I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting. I want people to know I did not know this was illegal. I learned my lesson the hard way. I will never do sports betting ever again."
Wednesday, March 20, 2024
The Dodgers held a team meeting after their season-opening win, explaining to the team that Ohtani loaned money to cover Mizuhara's gambling debts. However, Mizuhara was not accused of theft at that time.
ESPN was reportedly ready to publish the story on Wednesday, when Ohtani's spokesperson got back in touch with ESPN. This time, the spokesperson said Ohtani had been "the victim of a massive theft, and we are turning the matter over to the authorities."
The spokesperson told ESPN that Ohtani wasn't fully aware of the situation until after the game Wednesday because Mizuhara was "able to control information to Ohtani in his position as the interpreter," adding that Ohtani and his representatives did not realize until Wednesday that money was missing from his account.
The spokesperson denied Mizuhara's story and said Ohtani neither knew of Mizuhara's gambling debt not transferred money to Bowyer's associate.
During the Dodgers' season-opener in Seoul, Ohtani and Mizuhara could be seen talking in the dugout as normal.
In the afternoon in the United States, ESPN and The Los Angeles Times release their reports over the gambling allegations. Mizuhara was fired within hours.
Thursday, March 21, 2024
Ohtani is seen in the dugout without Mizuhara, who was let go by the team. After Los Angeles' 15-11 loss to the Padres, Ohtani did not speak to the media. Instead, he reportedly told Japanese reporters outside his locker to "have a good night" and left.
Friday, March 22, 2024
MLB said in a statement that they have opened a formal investigation into the incident. |

Thanks for the info. I hadn’t read much detail. I do think that charges against Mizuhara would be the best outcome for Ohtani if he didn’t know. That takes a suspension away unless something ugly comes up.

So Leafs are doing the resting thing with their players for the last 15% of the regular season. Sounds good, but they're also not fulfilling their patrons wish to see the best product on the ice, while they pay top dollar. Not a good look. Will it help them in the playoffs? Not sure. Maybe the management can put their jobs on the line if this doesn't work and they lose in the first round once more. How about Shanahan and Keefe falling on their swords this time? Guarantee us a self sacrifice and we'll go along with it. But I hardly doubt they'll do this. It's all about the cash you know. |
