Money is always a issue, especially for this Owner. I don't get that point, so what we had a abundance of Cap space. Still a waste
- Buff36

My point is he could have been on a vet minimum deal or a $10 million deal. The bigger issue is that Adams couldn't move on from him.

Not trying to argue this but.

So if they sign really bad players but only do it for one year it’s not an issue, correct?

I’ve liked Bryson this year.

And if you keep okposos robinson and girgensons on the 4th line and don’t force them up the lineup. Then they are fine

But too many times Donny would those okposos up the lineup and slow everything depth.

- Sabretooth9

Makes sense, we just disagree on those 4th line players. While Bryson has been better this year, he still isn't a good defender IMO.

With a line of thinking like Kevyn Adams has, who's really shocked that he would find value in a player like Erik Johnson?
- buffalofan19

He's great on the PK though, as you can see

**IN HIS ROLE** he's had the most positive effect on defense on the entire team, this year.

lol what. So we’d be better if we didn’t have questions around the entire ownership, front office and coaching structure is a wild statement.
- ImThatGuy

Well, yes. And it isn't about the whole structure - it is about being aggressive in roster building. They seem to draft well. I can replace a coach in a heartbeat, but I can't build a roster with an empty cupboard.

He made a move that checked a lot of boxes, and it didn't work out the way that they had hoped. He was signed to be a 6D and to help the kids, and it turns out he was washed up. It isn't the end of the world. To their credit, he did find the press box many nights. I would have also liked him gone sooner.

The fancy stats actually say that he has been pretty good this year. And if I am not mistaken, their record with him in the lineup is fantastic. Of course, that is not the end-all (see Samuelsson, 2022-2023).

Bryson?

Honestly haven't looked at his stats until now, but with a 45.5CF% and under a 1 pp/60, I'm surprised.

Beat me to the punch lol. He's having his best year for sure, I just wouldn't want to call Bryson good. Depends on the stat too it seems, for whether it's better or about the same as last year. Better goaltending helps a lot there though.

He isn't necessarily "good", but he has been good this year. Certainly better than EJ and probably Clifton as well. Would be a good 7th D if nothing else. We've been (deservedly) dumping on Meatballs and Adams today, but what can't be denied is that they've resurrected a lot of guys that many here had given up on. Those are assets preserved.

The 1-year deal point is valid. The far bigger offense is taking a career underachiever and saying "that's the guy I want our young players to emulate" all the while saying "we are serious about winning" with a straight face.
- buffalofan19

To be fair. We don’t know what the locker room is like and behind closed doors.

I was just told it’s too much of a country club lifestyle.

Bryson for the right price this summer. Can be my 7th d pick

Which one Johnson or Clifton

This is correct, and I would add Tampa to that list. The 4th line given to him didn't do him any favors, but this is a lineup that should be in a playoff spot.
- Slump Buster

Sabres have a better roster then Tampa?

Really? Why?

Tampa has a PPG Norris trophy contending defensemen, a forward who is close to leading the league in points, and three other forwards who are at or close to a PPG in Point, Hagel and Stamkos.

They also have a number of quality veterans at forward and defense.

Credit where credit is due. He un-Ralphed Dahlin and Tage/Mitts blew up. As previously stated, I did like Donny last year and wonder what changed.

That's fair and probably right around where he should be. But if that's the case, I think it does prove the point a bit...he was getting time with Power in the top4 there. We can't say Donny had the best of shakes here.

Not sure how many boxes adding Erik Johnson checked when it was strongly evident that he was done as a player.

Many found that move mystifying, especially when you add in what they paid him.

He played in 50 Sabres games.

He didn't find the press box often until he allegedly quit on the team after the first game he was benched for.

The one thing that's screaming out is he's a one system coach who the league adjusted to. This year, they started defensively, tried to switch back to up-tempo, then started throwing loads of low danger shots at goal, now back to low event hockey. Nothing has really worked consistently for them and I think that's just Donnie's inability to adapt. Watching Byram run into people because simple movement isn't part of their game is embarrassingly noticeable. Last year, Dahlin and Power were all over the ice and played a role in creating a lot of their offense. That seems way down this year.

All that and they have 4 more wins than Buffalo. Yikes
