Sorry but i can't take you seriously after that. Yes the Wings need a coach like Roy that pulls his goalie with over 11 minutes left in the 3rd period.

You do know Yzerman didn't hire Blashill don't you? He gave him a chance because the Wings were nowhere near a playoff contender and they needed better draft picks. Erne was one of the few physical bottom 6 the Wings had and again, they were going nowhere near the playoffs so what did it matter. If those are your issues, you are grasping at straws.

Not saying Lalonde is a HOF coach but common. Wings have improved their goal scoring, PP and PK to be either pretty good or decent.

I would also add that the NYI and TB aren't likely to pass Detroit because of Roy and Cooper, neither team is in a rebuild. They'll likely pass Detroit because one was a perineal powerhouse which has some of the top players in the league, including the world's best goalie, the other is loaded with talent and is more than a decade past their last rebuild.

Surprised by this. Maybe he needs an opportunity with more regular minutes. There goes our tough guy. Never heard of the player we traded him for.

I don't know why they signed him to begin with, if they weren't planning to play him

Same for Holl.
This free agent signings have been very hit (Compher,Gostisbhere) or miss (Holl,Copp) for Yzerman. He has to be careful.

I think Holl was the first FA signing they did, maybe they weren't sure of getting the others. The term surprised me

Don't think Kostin wanted to be in Detroit anymore. The game against the Avs showed that. He wasn't physical and the 7th goal i think it was, he didn't even try to stop Foudie from scoring even though he was right beside him he let him have 2 cracks at scoring without doing anything.

They basically dumped Kostin since Simek is similar salary but is a UFA and won't be signed. He's a 31 year old AHLer and a Czech so he's as good as gone this summer.

Maybe Simek was acquired for GR so that Eddy could move up. Yeah, Kostin is a cap dump.......for who?????? Who is coming in?

Don't think Simek is a good replacement for Edvinsson in GR. He's been sitting in the press box with the Sharks and his AHL numbers aren't that good. Sharks needed a roster spot for Kostin and they are close to max contracts too so they dumped him to make room.

Berggren is coming up for Kostin so unless Yzerman finds a way to dump a defenseman, i doubt we see Edvinsson this season unless injuries hit.

Simek actually has a higher AAV than Kostin ($2.25m vs $2m). The reason the Wings gain $900k in cap space on the deal in is because Simek is already in the minors, while Kostin is not.

In other words, it's probably not primarily about saving cap space this season (since they could have cleared even more space just by sending Kostin to GR), but more about clearing the cap space/roster spot for next season.

Watch all those teams loading up with a bunch of additions get bounced in the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs. Most of the time, that is what happens to good teams that make too many additions at the deadline.

Wings never won a cup when they made a lot of trades at the deadline back when they were good. They won it when they would only make 1 or 2 depth moves (usually a depth defenseman).

Seems weird to make that move now. I like kostin and wish he got more looks this year, especially if they do hang on to make it and run through some injuries I'm not sure why you'd ship him out for nothing now instead of in the summer.

So, in summary, he really stood pat, eh?
Should have move a D out for sure, but I can see how there would be no takers for Holl. Still, should have at least waived him, I guess.

From my seat, this was addition by subtraction. I liked Kostin, he's a bull and brings heavy hitting with some scoring punch......not much of that was demonstrated with the Wings. Now that there's a roster spot open, maybe Johnny Burgers comes up and lights up the NHL thus earning a spot on the roster that's so richly deserved.....Or Mazur, Or Kasper, or, or, or........ I'm uncomfortable with losing the physicality as addressed above; we need heavy-weights in the SCPO.......

Yeah, agree that's perplexing. Can Holl still be waived now? I know it's only around $1.2m saved, but.......someone could claim him and we are off the hook. Someone check my assumptions, please.....

Technically yes, Holl could be waived and even claimed (or even traded). However, he would be ineligible to play in the playoffs for the team that claims him.

Detroit still has ~$3 million in cap space, the trade deadline is over, and the 23-man roster limit is no longer in effect. So there's no need to do anything with Holl at this point. He's not keeping us from calling up anyone we want. Keep him on the roster, play him if you need to, scratch him if you don't. Try to get something for him in the offseason if you can.

I thought the 23 man roster limit only comes off after the season is over for the playoffs...are you sure about that?

Yup. CBA 16.4(a).

The salary cap remains in effect until the playoffs begin, but the 23-player limit goes away at the trade deadline.
