Devils prospect, an unsigned goalie. It was a complicated trade that allowed the Stars to add Tanev with no salary coming with him. Great move by Nil

Looks like the devils are doing the flames a favour. Hmm (markstrom)??

50% of 50% is technically 25%. Dallas gets Tanev at 25%. cheap like borscht.

Leafs wanted Zadorov and Tanev both at 50%. No question Leaf’s 1st rounder would have been on the table along with a Nick Robertson or Topi Niemela. Would have been other pieces there to round it out. Conroe must’ve gotten greedy and asked for Cowan or Minten.
That’s too bad coz package around leaf’s 1st rounder would have been hella better especially since fans of 31 teams believe Leafs will be out in the first round again

Maybe Tre was getting greedy. You never know. I don't think Conroy was looking to do Tre any favors.

Eric Francis had an interesting phone interview with Tanev today.

“We had brief talks in training camp and then basically a couple weeks ago I sat down with Connie and said, ‘I want to try to win – this could be my best chance to do it. He was super understanding and would only trade me to a team where they had the potential to win, and I appreciate that.
“As hard as it was, I felt it was the best opportunity to win a Stanley Cup, which has been my ultimate goal my whole career.”

If Conroy wants to help Tanev by sending him to a Cup contender… Toronto is probably not the place to send him.

Not really. They just bought a draft pick for about $300,000. They're not doing anything this year. If anything, the Flames did the Devils a favour. If it was even the Flames who set up that part of the deal.

Yea I’m super happy for Tanvev and I think DAL paid a fair price. For the Leafs to get him the 2nd rounder wasn’t there so it would’ve taken a 1st. And then to get a 3rd team involved for more retention it would meant even more assets. Toronto may or may not have been the best place for Tanev but neither would the acquisition cost. So I think this works out for Toronto as well. If Tanev is avail on July 1st and if the Leafs still have a need then he’s there for the taking. [img][/img]

Zadorov was a Richard in the room, Conroy is cleaning up the outhouse that Treliving left in a mess. I’m glad he didn’t try and help the man.

Im not defending Brad, he hasn’t done anything great so far in Toronto as yet. but I think we need to be fair too. I think blaming him for Calgary’s present state is unfair. Flames had a great 2021-22. JG bailed on the team at the 11th hour and days later Tkatchuk decided he wanted to go too. Most GMs would never recover from that. He did an admirable job of getting Hu and Weegar and signing Kadri….irrespective of how we we fans would like to Monday morning quarterback the contracts. Didn’t he bring in Markstrom, Lindholm, Tanev, Hanafin as well? Drafted some prospects that are now up with the club. Zadorov turning sour was not in his watch.

Parise and Tavares that walked away as UFAs from the teams that drafted them while still in their primes. Lou was the GM in both cases I think, wasn’t he. History will likely look at him as a failure of a GM right

Treliving did a fantastic job here. The only thing that was undefendable was the Huberdeau contract. Unfortunately, it was the worst contract in the history of the league from the second it was signed.

Didn’t he extend Mathews and Nylander? Sign Domi, Bertuzzi and Reaves for toughness? Let Lafferty walk for free?
He did some good things in Calgary that’s for sure, but letting Gadreau walk, signing Tkachuk to a bridge deal, mishandling Bennett, signing or trading for 7-8 goalies, going through coaches like Lordy goes through underwear, trading a first and 2-2nds for Hamonic, trading a 1st to unload Monahan, allowing Giordano to divide the dressing room, letting Lomberg walk, not re upping Hathaway, signing Brouwer, Neal, the list is endless. Sutter and the owner kicked him in the balls and he ran out the door. Now Conroy is slowly trying to clean up the mess he left.
He’ll turn the Leafs into a bubble team if he’s there long enough.

Well he does have more experience now that he’s been around for a while. He was neutered in Calgary the last year and a half.

Who in the organization is responsible for letting players play while injured? The wheels started falling off when Monahan was injured and still playing, yet they would keep trading away picks as a bubble team.

They weren't a bubble team though. Everyone forgets they won the division twice in four years. How many other teams won multiple division titles while Treliving was running the Flames? GM of the Flames is probably top three in the league for hardest GM jobs in the league.

The Oilers and Canucks have never won the Pacific division.

Good points. With tre there is sour and sweet. He was also lucky.

When Chia went from Boston to Edmonton Chia threatened to offer-sheet Boston for Dougie Hamilton. That's when the Flames got a call asking if they were interested in him.

Hamilton turned into Lindholm and Hanafin. Both of these players were brought in on great contracts, but neither wanted to stay after.

Many of the star players Tre negotiated opted not stay with the team. Not sure if that is a coincidence or not.
