Realistically, do you expect a better performance from Levi this year than Anderson last year?

I don't think that should be the expectation. League average would be great, but even that is asking a lot.

- Lunaion

Anderson’s season was a tale of two stories.

First half he was arguably a top 15 goalie, then the age caught up and he was just as bad if not worse then Comrie and UPL down the stretch and ended up finishing with negative goals saved above expected by the end of it all.

If Levi is strictly average, heck even slightly below average the goaltending is miles better than last year.

The Sabres got the worst goaltending in the league by a fair margin from January on and were still playing meaningful games in April.

And yes, that’s also considering the defensive albatross in front of them.

Yeah almost as good as comrie was in a similarly small sample.

Korpisalo was bottom 5 in GAR in both 22, and 21. The article is suggesting that the shift is due to a change in style. So its not an analytics driven bet, its an observation that perhaps this change will bring out better results.

But the numbers as a whole show far more bad goaltending than good.

- Michael Ghofrani

you just moved the goal post to a 3 year sample vs last year though

Yeah i moved them because the goal post of one season isnt much to go off of.

Thats how we landed comrie

To understand your perspective:

- The offense will regress

- The defense has slightly improved

- The goalie just has to be below average

Playoffs?

[quote=RhinoFan]They also lost the most promising offensive player on their team outside Stutzle. Korpi isn't good either. IMO they didn't rise or fall.
- washedup20

IMO the Sabres are in the same boat.

We didn't lose anything and seemingly got two better RHD that can help prevent shots. I'd say we lifted a bit, but same area. We were better than Ottawa by a lot last year, so isn't it fair to assume they're kinda back of the pack again?

I don't think it's that simple.
You gotta go deeper into Ron Jeremy to find out how good Levi will be.

Agree that anything is an improvement over last year. Just worried that it’s a mountain of pressure for a rookie goalie with no viable partner for relief

Beane shouldnt be complacent.

Why not add Taylor from indy? He's available.

They will have their 1C back, and you could argue addition by subtraction, getting the cat out of the room will vibes them into the same middling area as the Sabres.

It's a real possibility their veteran goalie will play more consistently, giving them a better chance than the Sabres as well, I have no clue though.

I'm holding out for the Gummy Bear Celly Song.

EDIT: Not even kidding though - what teams are we bumping out of the playoffs from last year and even if we manage to be better than one of those teams - are we also better than Detroit / Ottawa / Pitt? I don't know man.

Not to mention - Columbus could actually turn it around and Montreal isn't going to be completely awful either.

- JCSabs06

What makes you think that this a one way street. Maybe the Sabres continue on the upswing and maybe the others aren't as good.

Perhaps the BOARD should wait and see what happens when it happens. Such negativity all the time is counterproductive for the soul.

What team are we knocking out of the playoffs? After that, are you certain that we have improved significantly beyond Ottawa and Detroit and think that we can for sure beat out Sid and Malkin in possibly their last push?

Is the NHL now gifting playoff positions based on last year's points and offseason doings or not doings?

Yes. And if you “win the offseason” automatically you win the first round too
