Good post.

Underappreciated buffalo blue collar lunch bucket guy.

Hes not underappreciated. Hes over paid and over stayed. FFS i own a girgensons jersey and still wear it to games. The fact that he is such a topic of discussion just means adams hasn't done enough to make the forward group whole.

Tatar is still a free agent who will sign in the 3-4mill range. A real two way middle 6 forward but i guess we don't need him because adams resigned our 4th line and two 5/6 dmen with that money. Its pathetic

Good post

I do not have a Girgensons Jersey. Although he's an excellent defensive forward.

Literally stone cold facts provided that shows Girgensons is a great defensive forward

Ion: I disagree

Days before historic 1.5 billion dollar lottery won, I say take home is just shy of 1 billion, estimated take home for the winner, just shy of 1 billion

Ion: I disagree

Well I got news for you, 2+2=4

Patrice Bergeron was a great defensive forward. Girgensons is a 4th liner who's good at defense.

The lot of you seem to misunderstand what “defensive forward” actually means.

Bergeron was a 2-way forward. He could score and play defense. Datsyuk was maybe the best ever 2-way forward.

A defensive forward doesn’t score much but plays good defense.

I’m not even defending Girgensons but there’s been more than a few charts that shows his defensive capabilities.

"The Frank J. Selke Trophy is an annual award given "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game." The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers Association at the end of the regular season."

https://www.nhl.com/news/...c-287904026?tid=287709666

Where does it say anything about offense?

Though I feel like we're getting bogged down in semantics.

Girglesons is a 4th liner good at defense. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. The problem is overpaying and overplaying the guy when he's just not that good. And he's been here for 10 years.

Now the Norris Trophy has a closer definition to what you're talking about re: 2-way forwards, only it's obviously defensemen.

"The James Norris Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position.""

I was going to mention the Norris trophy as a perfect example - it doesn’t always go to the best overall defenseman, but almost always goes to the highest scoring defenseman.

The Selke winner has been the same way since the 90’s but it actually used to go to the forward who “best excels in the defensive aspects of the game” until a guy named Sergei Federov showed up.

Bobby Orr ruined the Norris pretty much the second he showed up lol

Shouldn't Girgensons great D skills be used against other teams best players. You call out lon for statistics shown and lon comes back showing that a lot of his 5vs5 ice time isn't plus are PK has sucked since he's been here. So he's good Defensively against other good 4th line players. I don't get calling lon out.

You have watched him play, would you ever vote for him for the selke award?

Girgs is a leader(laughable) and has outstanding individual defensive stats….while being a part of some of, if not the worst rosters the NHL has ever seen. His presence is a continuation of the embarrassment that is the Sabres under Terry.

What was the last offseason by a Sabres GM that was worthy of thinking they are a contender?

This offseason like the previous 2 GM's has left a significant amount of questions unanswered, what do you think are the driving factors that leads multiple GM's to build rosters out this way?

Dude I hate Girgensons I just see a lot of charts showing his defensive metrics, you’re reading into something that isn’t there - I in no way think he’s even close to a Selke candidate.

I’m not gonna sit here denying facts and telling people they’re wrong without evidence like the Hockeybuzz 5 do.

Clearly it’s been shown that Girgs is a good defensive - not 2-way - forward. I don’t think he brings enough in other aspects of the game to warrant a roster spot at this point. Neither does Old Man Okposo. Jost could have replaced both of them at once and then we would’ve had an additional spot for Rousek or Murray but vibes man.

Are vibes and synergy the same thing? That’s the bigger question…

Girgenson's quality of competition ranked 18th in RAPM on the team.

In the role he played, and the competition he played against, he was extremely useful in his own end of the ice at even strength.

Bergeron on the other hand was ranked 1 in RAPM QoC and had similar defensive impacts.
