The Banjo-Mutts had their season preview and roster page update on the same day. Sask is losing their top scorer (Franklin) and other players spread throughout all echelons of the depth chart. Like everybody else, they are going with a smaller roster (from 29 to 25). Unlike most others, they have a more or less normal turnover.

The rest of the CW starts their regular season on Friday night, but the Bisons have a bye. Instead, they will travel to the Excited States for a pair of games. On Saturday, they will visit The Ralph and likely playing the NCAA‛s 4th ranked team before about 10,000 fans. On Sunday, they make a short trip east where they will face Bemidji State, themselves ranked 4th out of eight teams in the CCHA.

Back in the day, Bemidji State and last week‛s opponent Lakehead were conference and NAIA rivals before Lakehead joined GPAC and Bemidji State joined the NCAA. Speaking of which, I have linked a local TB news story about last weekend.

To have any degree of success this weekend, the Herd will need much stronger goaltending than either starter provided last weekend.

The live links may be altered prior to game time. Updated live links are likely to be available from the opponents‛ schedule & results pages.

The CW Coaches‛ Poll was announced at the links. Here‛s the summary of the poll in comparison to the actual pre-season results.

NOTE: Coaches ranked all opponents 1-8. First-place votes worth 8 points, second-place worth 7 points etc.

A year ago, the Mythical Mutants started their debut season in the CW with an impressive sweep on the road in Regina. After that, Mac won just one more game and Regina had a solid season. The Banjo-Cats were a tough opponent for anybody. The CW Coaches‛ Poll has these teams 7th and 8th. FWIW, there is a big gap between #7 and #8.

ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (2021-22: 16-3-1, 6-1-1, OHT35 #n/a)

In my opinion, these teams were the CW‛s top two in the exhibition schedule. Whilst the Evil Monkeys are 1st in the Coaches‛ Poll, the Bluegars moved into 2nd. They played two exhibition games against one another, each claiming a win. This is a home-and-home series. The Bluegars have threatened to break into the CW‛s upper echelon for a while now but have never quite made it. Also, you can‛t pay cash for a ticket at MRU. I loathe this trend.

TRINITY WESTERN SPARTANS (2021-22: 2-18-0, 1-2-0, OHT35 #n/a)

Holy Trinity is breaking in a new coach and almost half of a new roster. Their prep has been limited with one exhibition game against UBC and two against Simon Fraser of the BCIHL. Meanwhile, the Banjo-Mutts look to have a solid core of returnees and had some good pre-season results. To their credit, TWU really improved by the end of last season. This series could be tough for the Spartans.

CALGARY DINOSAURS (2021-22: 12-7-1, 3-2-1, OHT35 #n/a)

UBC has had a lot of turnover, albeit with an enviable recruiting class. Their exhibition results were dubious, with their only wins coming against Holy Trinity, Simon Fraser, and MacEwan. Meanwhile, Bedrock U split six games against Alberta, MRU, and Saskatchewan. The T-irds need to obtain some results to follow up on the success of last season. Although 3rd in the Coaches‛ Poll, I have UBC seeded 7th after the pre-season.

NATIONAL NEWS

So Squirrels‛ coach Gardiner MacDougall will be assisted by Mark Howell from Calgary, Clarke Singer (Western), Patrick Grandmaitre (Ottawa), and Brett Gibson (Queen's). So it will be a nation-wide team of first choice players for the first time.

September 29: MANITOBA BISONS ROSTER

The Bisons‛ roster page was updated today and there was one new addition who did not play on the weekend and was not previously announced, and one more announced last year who did play once on the weekend.

ERIC FAWKES - F - Winnipeg Blues (MJHL)

The new name is #23 Eric Fawkes, a 6'3" 194 lbs. forward, who tallied 23 goals and 39 assists for 62 points in 48 games for the Blues in the MJHL. He was also committed to play for RPI in the NCAA but has clearly had a change of heart.

ANDRE SUTTER - F - Ramperswil (U20-Top) & EHC Seewen (MSL)

This player was announced last year and played in the pre-season only. He was not on the regular season roster. He is only 5'8" which makes him unique on the squad. He has roots in BC and Switzerland. He last played in Canada in 2017-18 in the Junior B VIJHL. I do not know where the Swiss leagues fit into hockey's scheme of things. In 2020-21 he had 16 points in 10 junior games and no points in 4 senior games. There were no listings for him in 2021-22.

35 Brett Murphy (G - Dryden - SIJHL)

DEPARTURES (10)
1 Jeremy Link (G - South Blues - MJHL)

25 Garrett Sambrook (D - Swift Current - WHL)
27 Carter Doerksen (D - Nipawin Hawks - SJHL)
30 Zach Bennett (G - West Kelowna - BCHL)

On paper, the recruited players are collectively better than the departures. The only players in their Top 13 scorers to depart are Keaton Jameson (now gone to Utah of the ECHL) and Reece Harsch (who was part of the USports exodus to the AHL and ECHL during the Covid shutdown, and is now with Fife in the EIHL). The big question is goaltending, where last season‛s #3 at the start of the season (Brett Murphy) played the best last weekend.

Sept 30: CW SEASON STARTS WITH BISONS‛ BYE

The Bisons start with a conference bye but instead have a Saturday-Sunday weekend. Before we get to Friday‛s games, there is some additional news.

The guys at 49-Sport did a pre-season breakdown of the CW. That story is linked.

Also, UMFM radio and Bison Sports could not make a deal on broadcasting rights, so nothing is expected to happen in that regard this year. A story is linked along with a podcast preview episode.

Finally, UND posted some notes and a 17 page PDF for the Saturday night game.

The guys at 49-Sport made a conjecture-based selection of the USports Universiade team. I suspect a few Evil Monkeys will be selected.

The Banjo-Cats need to lobby the schedule-maker in order to play somebody else to start next season. They started last season going 0-2-0 against the Griffins.

The first period was even, with 2 goals on 14 shots for each side. However, the Mythical Mutants scored 3 goals on 7 shots in less than 9 minutes of the 2nd period to chase Mager from the Regina net. The Kittens were purring in the 3rd, closing the score to 6-5 before an empty-netter sealed the deal. The PPs were clicking, with Regina 3-for-5 and MacEwan 1-for-2.

Also, the Manitoba Moose are now headed to Regina for an exhibition game during Regina‛s bye week. The Moose have played the Bisons six times, holding a 4-2 edge. No games have been played since 2010.

The first half of the game was quite good and was the focus of my attention on CWTV. But once the Evil Monkeys started tossing bananas in every direction, the Bluegars were bamboozled. The defensive focus for the Monkeys was impressive. The held the Bluegars to just 4 shots in each of the 2nd and 3rd periods.

This game had a nicely staggered start time, 30 minutes after the first two games and 30 minutes before the game from British California. So I tuned in when Alberta had things sewn up in their game. Last year, Sask had a great broadcast but this was weak. It sounded like they asked for volunteers from the crowd. The game wasn‛t much to look at, either. The Banjo-Mutts treated Holy Trinity like fire hydrants.

I was able to listen to this on radio. Mitch Dyck opened the scoring in the 1st period, which ended tied 1-1. However, UND scored four times in the 2nd period to salt it away. In the nets, Brett Murphy started and played two periods, making 26 saves. Ross Hawryluk came on the 3rd period and made 11 saves. After the disaster against Lakehead, this is encouraging. The radio guys gave Murphy some credit as well.

After a scoreless first, the Banjo-Cats came out like they were on catnip in the second period. I managed to catch the period after my Saturday shopping and it was all one-way traffic. I switched over to the UBC game in the intermission and missed seeing the Mutants‛ rally to make it 4-3. Three goals in less than 5 minutes put this away for the Kittens. On the night, Regina was 4-for-7 on the PP, whilst Mac was just 1-for-8.

This was a matinee game, which started an hour later than the Mac game. The stagger allowed me to see most of this one. It had a lot of ebb-and-flow, with a few dead spots. In the end, it had tension, two OT PPs, and a shoot-out.

This was a deceptive score. Trailing 4-1 mid-way through the 3rd period, the Bluegars pulled their goaltender in a desperate bid to get back in the game. They did score 6-on-4 to close to within 4-2.

Goal: Reg: Evanoff (38 shots-35 saves), Mac: Abel (L) (21 shots-17 saves), David (20 shots-17 saves)

UBC: E. McIndoe (03:16 1st) , S. Mutala (16:18 1st) , J. Wismer (02:53 3rd)
Goal: Cgy: Stankowski (39 shots-36 saves), UBC: Lane (31 shots-28 saves)

This was a matinee game, which started an hour later than the Mac game. The stagger allowed me to see most of this one. It had a lot of ebb-and-flow, with a few dead spots. In the end, it had tension, two OT PPs, and a shoot-out.

AB: J. Prokop (03:53 2nd) , J. Smallwood (06:11 2nd) , N. Volcan (10:16 2nd) , J. Prokop (00:31 3rd) , J. Paterson (16:17 3rd) , E. Florchuk (16:54 3rd)
Goal: MRU: Berry (31 shots-27 saves), Alta: Schneider (28 shots-26 saves)

This was a deceptive score. Trailing 4-1 mid-way through the 3rd period, the Bluegars pulled their goaltender in a desperate bid to get back in the game. They did score 6-on-4 to close to within 4-2. However, the Evil Monkeys scored two empty-net shorthanded goals to put it away. Impressive sweep for the Apes to start the season.

Sask: J. Dmytriw (06:35 1st) , J. Dmytriw (12:54 2nd) , A. Zawatsky (03:19 3rd) , J. Dmytriw (15:12 3rd) , G. Kinniburgh (17:01 3rd) , J. Kaluski (03:44 2nd OT)
Goal: TWU: LaBelle (56 shots-50 saves), Sask: Kooy (8 shots-4 saves) Hobbs (W) (24 shots-23 saves)

This could have been the upset of the season. Holy Trinity held a 5-1 lead early in the 2nd period, and a 5-2 lead entering the 3rd. The Banjo-Mutts piled on 22 shots in the 3rd period to comeback and force overtime. Jared Dmytriw of Sask gets credit for the season‛s first hat-trick.

Oct 5: BISON PREVIEW CHARTS

Ahead of the Thursday weekend preview (which will hopefully have links to preview stories from all teams), here is a look at the Bisons in chart form.

The first chart contains the Bison record against each opponent last year, plus the number of games against each opponent scheduled for 2022-23.

In 2021-22 the Covid lockdowns caused the shortening of the season, down to 20 games. This year the CW is back to 28 games. But whereas before this meant an even four games against each opponent, it now means that two opponents must be played only two games in one series. For the Bisons, that means they will face MacEwan and Saskatchewan in just one series.

Looking back, the Bisons did fairly well against the better teams. They split with Alberta, Mount Royal, and Calgary. Against UBC they had a one goal loss and an overtime loss. Even the 1-3-0 against Saskatchewan is not particularly disastrous. The big problem was the 0-4-0 against Regina and 1-1-0 against TWU. It was those results which got them eliminated from the playoffs.

In overall recruiting and roster turn-over, it seems that Manitoba and MacEwan improved and everybody else was weakened, even if ever so slightly in some cases. I suspect that the Covid lockdowns, which caused an unprecedented mid-season exodus across the country, took their toll. Time will tell if this was just a one-off.

The Bison forwards are so-so. They did not have reliable scoring a year ago. They did return 11 of their top 13 scorers, the big loss being Keaton Jameson. I suspect that their replacements for him and the low-end departures (players with 3 or fewer points) will be adequate.

The defence should be a strength. They will be sitting two solid prospects each game. Provided they are coached within a reasonable defensive system, they should do well. They have five WHL grads, veteran Mitch Dyck, and two highly rated MJHL rookies.

The goaltending is a big question-mark. The games I saw against Lakehead and Regina were cringeworthy at times. Brett Murphy, last year‛s #3 at the start of the season and #2 at the end, looked steady. His only game last year was a win over Saskatchewan. I do not want to jump to conclusions on the newcomers, but they will need to prove themselves. At the same time, the same thing can be said in Regina and UBC (where their losses in net are especially pronounced), and to a lesser extent on other teams.

Regina has a wide variety of opponents in bye-week exhibition games. On Thursday it‛s Briercrest College of the ACAC and on Friday it‛s the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The Moose training camp just started with early cuts from the Winnipeg Jets and players on try-out deals. This was a late addition to the schedule, likely because as recently as last weekend the Moose never had a roster. The Moose will also face the Bisons for the 7th time on October 11th at the Ice Plex. Former Bison goaltender Liam Hughes has a try-out with the Moose, as does Ben Hawerchuk, son of Dale Hawerchuk.

In the Battle of Edmontown, the Evil Monkeys host Friday, and Mac hosts Saturday. Mac managed a split with Regina (not bad for them) but Alberta destroyed MRU and looked impressive.

➤ UofM: MHKY: Bisons battle from 3-0 down, but can't complete comeback, falling 6-4 to UBC (with boxscore)
➤ UBC: Birds down Bisons in wild third period

Before I get to the game news and views, those UBC uniforms are tough to read. They have a chest-high dark blue hoop which sits nicely behind a primarily white logo but which obscures the dark blue numbers. This was worse than Manitoba‛s black numbers on a dark brown jersey, or Regina‛s yellow numbers on a white jersey, in past seasons.

Here‛s how they lined up:

MANITOBA
Goal
34 Hawryluk (35 Murphy)

Defence
2 Stewart - 27 Gottfried
8 Toth - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk

Forwards
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
20 Apetagon - 19 Arpin - 21 Basarab
13 Sutter - 28 Behun - 29 King

14 Keane (F) - 23 Fawkes (F) - 26 McCorrister (F)

U.B.C.
Goal
30 Lane (60 Schwebius)

Defence
40 Smart - 26 Lambos
24 Lee - 43 Pouliot
9 Smith - 27 McDonald

Forwards
17 Kindree - 21 Huo - 29 McNabb
39 McIndoe - 15 Atkinson - 41 Williams
23 Rask - 37 Douglas - 34 Mutala
8 Miller - 10 Doust - 13 Wismer

Scratches
7 N Form (D) - 12 Keon (D) - 14 Kryski (F)
18 J Form (F) - 19 Sandhu (F) - 31 Luding (G)

Quick summary:
UBC: J. Lee (04:31 1st) , J. Lee (06:39 1st) , C. Miller (12:36 1st) , E. McIndoe (13:16 3rd) , J. Williams (14:47 3rd) , S. Mutala (19:27 3rd)
Man: C. Hartje (04:30 2nd) , D. Skoleski (03:44 3rd) , B. Davis (10:37 3rd) , B. Davis (14:32 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Lane (15 shots, 11 saves), Man: Hawryluk (34 saves, 29 shots)

I‛ve seen new goaltender Ross Hawryluk play twice now and it seems clear that if the Bisons ever want to win a game with him in net they‛ll need at least 5 goals. He allowed three weak goals from what were not quality scoring chances, and one mishandled puck set up a 4th. Unless those two games are not all reflective of his unreported exhibition games, this could be a big problem.

The T-irds grabbed a 2-0 lead early, despite not really generating a Grade-A scoring chance. The period ended with the Herd trailing 3-0. I was a bit surprised to see Hawryluk back in goal for the 2nd period. The Bisons adopted a new strategy, so it seems. They iced the puck at every opportunity. This ended the problem with turnovers and the easy goals on long shots. Even when UBC won the ensuing face-off, all that would happen is whack-and-hack in the slot, and Hawryluk does well against those sort of shots.

The Bisons tied the game at 3-3 mid-way through the 3rd. However, at that point they couldn‛t get a save when needed. UBC‛s 4-3 goal was on a turnover by Hawryluk. The Bisons tied it up a minute later, but the tie only lasted 15 seconds. An empty-netter sealed the deal.

The rematch goes Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at The Rink. There isn‛t much for seating so the crowd is really jammed tight.

MANITOBA BISONS 4
BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS 3

This was scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd. There was nothing about this on the Bemdji site, but the score popped up on the Bison Schedule & Results page. The win gave the Bisons a 3-3-0 pre-season record, and a split of their tour of the Excited States. Maybe Hawryluk had a good game. I have no details, nor do I know where to find any.

Here‛s the result that everybody wants to read about! The Mythical Mutants won the Battle of Edmontown. I am not a big fan of Saturday matinee games. This game forced me to miss seeing the Blue Jays blow an 8-1 lead. One good thing: The line-up pages they distributed listed the players by line and specified the scratches.

Here‛s how they lined up, cast in order of appearance:

MANITOBA
Goal
35 Murphy - 1 Harkness

Defence
8 Toth - 6 Dyck
16 Hartje - 4 Malchuk
2 Stewart - 27 Gottfried

Forwards
12 Patrick - 19 Arpin - 28 Behun
10 Skoleski - 22 Davis - 17 Veloso
18 Hooker - 9 Thiessen - 11 Ostir
29 King - 21 Basarab - 20 Apetagon

Scratches
5 Schioler (D) - 13 Sutter - 14 Keane (F)
23 Fawkes (F) - 26 McCorrister (F) - 34 Hawryluk (G)

U.B.C.
Goal
60 Schwebius (30 Lane)

Defence
24 Lee - 43 Pouliot
40 Smart - 26 Lambos
9 Smith - 27 McDonald

Forwards
39 McIndoe - 15 Atkinson - 41 Williams
23 Rask - 37 Douglas - 34 Mutala
17 Kindree - 21 Huo - 29 McNabb
8 Miller - 19 Sandhu - 13 Wismer

Scratches
7 N Form (D) - 10 Doust (F) - 12 Keon (D)
14 Kryski (F) - 18 J Form (F) - 31 Luding (G)

The Bisons had one change, inserting Patrick for Sutter. He also moved from D to LW and his line was the first over the boards in the 1st and 2nd periods. Also, Hooker was injured 5 minutes into the game and did not return. The injured list may have grown.

Quick summary:
UBC: E. McIndoe (11:31 1st) , C. McNabb (13:04 1st) , C. McNabb (16:39 1st) , S. Atkinson (18:17 1st) , C. McNabb (02:13 2nd) , S. Atkinson (09:28 2nd) , J. Lee (03:03 3rd) , C. Douglas (18:56 3rd)
Man: D. Skoleski (02:29 1st) , T. Apetagon (07:14 1st) , C. Hartje (16:25 1st) , T. Apetagon (13:51 2nd) , B. Davis (16:21 2nd) , N. Basarab (17:51 2nd) , B. Davis (19:57 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Schwebius (31 shots, 24 saves), Man: Murphy (16 saves, 11 shots), Harkness (23 shots, 21 saves)

The Bisons could set records for the most losses by a team scoring 7 goals (maybe 5 and 6, too). Eleven goals in the series, and not even an OTL point. Now many of UBC‛s goals, especially the early ones, were on blown coverages. But the numbers speak for themselves. The game was tied 6-6 after two, and the Bisons had some momentum. Then a drifter from the point eluded Harkness. There were then no more goals until an empty-netter.

The Bison PP was 2-for-6 (4-for-10 on the weekend), which sounds good until you consider that the T-irds went 4-for-5 (4-for-8 on the weekend).

Did anybody think that the Mythical Mutants would beat the Evil Monkeys yet again? Me neither. The PPs are clicking around the CW this year. The Monkeys were 3-for-7 and the Family Guys were 2-for-5 in this one.

Once again, I was able to catch a good amount of the night cap game from the coast. This was a good old fashioned butt-kicking.

➤ UBC: McNabb hat trick, lethal power play leads UBC to wild win in Winnipeg (with boxscore)

In the Town of Bedrock, it‛s Yabba Dabba Doo Time. The Dinos salvage a split for the second consecutive weekend. That makes sense. Sask‛s loss means that every team in the CW has at least one loss.

This is an important series for the Bisons. Their 0-4-0 record against the Banjo-Cats (and 1-1-0 record against Holy Trinity) is what did them in last year. These teams split a pair of pre-season games, both winning away. Regina cannot be happy with an away split against The Family Guys on opening weekend and should be feeling some pressure in their home opener.

Bison d-man Chase Hartje was the U of M‛s male athlete of the week last week, as per the linked story. Although the Bisons and Kittens have played just twice each (whilst the rest of the conference has played four games) the Bisons have the top two scorers in the conference (Hartje is 2-6-8 and Brett Davis is 4-3-7) and Devon Skoleski (2-4-6) sits at 11th.

Generating goals has not been the problem for the Herd, it is stopping them. Including the pre-season, they have surrendered 39 goals in 8 games. Simon Harkness has "normal" regular season numbers (0-1-0, .913 S%, 3.26 GAA) after playing 36 minutes in relief. However, he came out of the pre-season at #3 on the depth chart. IMO, as goaltending goes, so go the Bisons. I‛ll be interested to see what they do. Whoever got the win in Bemidji must have played well enough to beat Regina.

The Bisons must have confidence that they can generate goals in this series. I‛ll be hoping they can hold Regina below 8 goals. Also, I'll be interested to see which, if any, of the injured players will return to the lineup. Last week, Schioler, Keane, Fawkes, and McCorrister were on the IL and Hooker was injured early in Saturday's game.

Holy Trinity looked overwhelmed by MRU last weekend. They were also dominated by Sask except when building the 5-1 lead they blew in overtime. The worst news for them is that after the Evil Monkeys lost to The Family Guys last Friday, they might not be so easy to catch asleep again.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (2-2-0, 6-4-0, OHT35 #9*)
CALGARY DINOSAURS (2-2-0, 5-5-0, OHT35 #16*)

➤ MRU: Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Riley Sawchuk
➤ UofC: Dinos face crosstown rival in Hall of Fame game

The cross-town rivals meet in what could be a very tight series. Bedrock U has split with both UBC and Sask, and the Bluegars were crushed by Alberta before crushing TWU. It will be interesting to see how MRU handles a close series. These teams split four games last year. Of course, with MRU one has to watch their leading scorers. Nolan Yaremko (4-3-7) and Riley Sawchuk (2-4-6) are always worth watching.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (3-1-0, 6-3-1, OHT35 #5*)
U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (3-0-1, 6-2-2, OHT35 #8*)

➤ CW: MRU forward, UBC defenceman combine for 10 points in impressive showings
➤ USports: UBC's Lee notches back-to-back goals, named U SPORTS men's hockey player of the week

Both sides have done well out of the gate but yet neither really looks quite like a contender, at least for now. UBC‛s goaltenders do not look like adequate replacements for Rylan Toth. And I‛m still trying to figure out how Sask fell behind TWU 5-1 before rallying for a win. It would be a real boon if either side could sweep this series.
