Here‛s the schedule:
Thu Feb 23 Saskatchewan at Calgary (7:00 MST/8:00 CST)
Fri Feb 24 Saskatchewan at Calgary (7:00 MST/8:00 CST)
Sat Feb 25 Saskatchewan at Calgary (7:00 MST/8:00 CST)*
And here‛s the season records:
Calgary
v. Top 5: 11-3-0
v. Bottom 4: 14-0-0
v. Sask: 3-1-0
v. Sask (5 years): 7-8-3
Saskatchewan
v. Top 5: 4-9-3
v. Bottom 4: 10-1-1
v. Calgary: 1-1-2
v. Calgary (5 years): 11-4-3
These teams have met in the last two playoffs (2021 was cancelled). In 2020, Saskatchewan won a semi-final 2-0. In 2022, Calgary won a quarter-final 2-1.
The story of the season is Bedrock U‛s 23 game winning streak entering the playoffs. They started going 3-3-0 in the pre-season, then lost on Friday and won on Saturday in their first three series. Then BOOM! The biggest winning streak in CW history, including 11 series sweeps. But don‛t count out the Banjo-Mutts. They scored 91 goals, and gave up 90, which seems very .500ish. However, they are coming off a mild surprise win over the Bluegars.

Alberta is coming off a bye and UBC beat Regina in two straight games in the quarter-finals.
The series may come down to who gets the goaltending. Both sides went with a 3-some and before settling down. Alberta‛s Ethan Kruger‛s stats were: 12-2-0, .923 S%, 2.00 GAA. He is now the clear #1. UBC‛s Kaeden Lane was: 10-2-1, .906 S%, 2.67 GAA.

➤ Summaries: LeagueStat : CW
➤ UofS: MHKY: Huskies Snap Dinos Win Streak with 5-3 Victory (with boxscore and video)
➤ UofC: Huskies stun Dinos in Game 1 (with boxscore and video)
Quick Summary
Sask: C. Hobbs (14:10 1st), J. Kaluski (16:40 1st), J. Dmytriw (03:22 2nd), S. Collins (08:53 3rd), J. Ball (18:51 3rd)
Calg: T. Upper (09:22 1st), J. Gricius (02:49 3rd), J. Gricius (03:49 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Ross (18 shots, 15 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (20 shots, 16 saves)
The weekend started a day early in the Town of Bedrock, where the biggest winning streak in CW history has now indeed gone down in history.
The Banjo-Mutts treated the Dinos like a whole bunch of fire hydrants, stifling them at every movement. In fact, the Bedrock Boys managed just 3 shots in the 2nd period. Trailing 3-1 entering the 3rd period, Jake Gricius (in 28 games, 15-19-34 in the regular season) scored two quick ones to tie the game and make it anybody‛s game.

Calg: R. Stotts (13:54 1st), B. Schoonbaert (12:48 3rd), C. Gengenbach (15:04 3rd), N. King (18:03 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Ross (22 shots, 19 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (33 shots, 31 saves)
The Banjo-Mutts actually seemed to be the better team for most of this game. However, it was very defensive, and tied 1-1, until three goals (two by the Dinos) were scored in just over a two-minute stretch of the 3rd. An empty-netter then put it away. Sask has a real chance to pull off back-to-back upsets.

Goal: UBC: (Lane (34 shots, 31 saves), Alta: Kruger (28 shots, 24 saves)
This was a good battle, marred by a severe headshot upon Evil Monkey Daneel Lategan. Jonny Lambos of the T-irds was assessed a 5-minute major and game misconduct. I believe he gets an automatic one-game suspension (at least) for game two. Lategan was permitted back in the game a long time later, and scored. In my opinion, any player clearly concussed should not be permitted to return.
In any event, the T-irds built a 3-1 lead after two periods before the Monkeys stormed back to tie it in the 3rd. Overall, I would have to call game two a toss-up.

Goal: Sask: Ross (23 shots, 18 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (18 shots, 17 saves)
The score is a bit misleading here. The Mutts managed to check Calgary pretty well, holding them to 24 shots (one into an empty net). The problem for them was they never got the saves when needed. Plus Bedrock U held them to just 18 shots. Of note, the Mutts were trailing 4-1 after two, but pulled their goalie early. They gave up an empty-netter with 7 minutes left.
The Dinos will now host the conference championship and have secured a berth in the University Cup.

Goal: UBC: Schwebius (43 shots, 39 saves), Alta: Kruger (29 shots, 26 saves)
This has been a heck of a series so far. It is hard to see both CW games at once (plus HNIC and the Scotties), but this has been quite good. The T-irds switched goaltenders, which could be an edge for them in game 3. Schwebius also held them in the game for long stretches. I missed the beginning, where UBC built a 2-0 lead, but thereafter the Evil Monkeys carried the play. The difference was the powerplays. The Monkeys went 3-for-6, the T-irds went 0-for-5. The GWG was in the last 2 minutes on a tough call against UBC. One of their players was skating by a defenceman with one hand on his stick. He lifted it to get by but boinked him in the face.

After two close games, this was relatively easy for the Evil Monkeys. They really took over in the 2nd period, where they built a 3-1 lead.
So the #1 and #2 seeds are in the final after receiving scares in the semi-finals. Bedrock U will host the final, a unique opportunity for them. They lost the final to Alberta in 2011 and 2014, and to Saskatchewan in 2012. They last hosted and won finals in 1995 (over Manitoba) and 1996 (over Regina). En route to the 1996 final, they hosted and beat Alberta in the semi-finals. I believe that was the last time they hosted Alberta in the playoffs.

This was classic playoff hockey, with Bedrock U holding the edge most of the night. The U-Sports rankings are usually gerrymandered to boost the teams to have qualified. Also, the rules state that the conference champions MUST be seeded #1 to #3 and the OUA runner-up must be #4.
Based on the foregoing, I expect Calgary to be the #1 seed (and face U.P.E.I., destined to be #8 regardless). I also expect Alberta to be #5 or #6 and the OUA bronze team to be #7. Here are my expected outcomes for the four possible scenarios:
New Brunswick and U.Q.T.R. win:
#2 New Brunswick v #7 OUA Bronze
#3 U.Q.T.R. v #6 Saint Mary‛s

#1 Calgary v #8 U.P.E.I.

I would also not be surprised to see a further gerrymander in the first two scenarios where Saint Mary‛s and Alberta would switch places so that they would be on the opposite side of the draw from the conference champion. I don‛t tink they‛d switch U.P.E.I. and the OUA bronze team in the #7 and #8 slots.
Given the closeness of the OUA series so far, the choice of opponent may not make much difference.

Preview: March 9-12: USPORTS ENDS, ACAC & BCIHL SEMIS BEGIN
The CW is done, but the rest continue to battle on. Calgary and Alberta are patiently waiting for the U-Cup schedule to be announced. Four OUA teams are fighting over three U-Cup berths, the AUS final is all square, and the ACAC and BCIHL are down to four teams each.
OUT EAST
CONCORDIA STINGERS (19-7-0, 3-1-1, 28-9-1, OHT35 #9)
LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES (18-6-3, 3-2-0, 25-11-5, OHT35 #7)

➤ Lakehead: Team Website
This is a one-game bronze medal playoff for the USports wild-card berth in the nationals. Usually this game has at least one slightly-above-mediocre participant. This year, however, both sides would be credible U-Cup teams and a threat to whomever they may play. Lakehead will host this game Saturday night at 7:00 EST (6:00 CST).
U.Q.T.R. PATRIOTES (21-4-1, 4-1-0, 29-8-2, OHT35 #4)
WINDSOR LANCERS (18-7-2, 4-0-1, 27-9-2, OHT35 #10)
Links:
➤ UQTR: Team Website
➤ Windsor: Team Website
Windsor‛s series wins over Brock and Lakehead have boosted them to where they would be #6 in the OHT35 if a full re-ranking were to be done. Of note, of the nine teams still alive all but the host UPEI are in the top 10, and UPEI is #12. Windsor gets to host because the gold medal Queen‛s Cup game must be held in Ontario. Hopefully the RSEQ will get a men‛s league going soon with UQAM wanting in. Windsor starts their games at 7:30 EST (6:30 CST).
SAINT MARY‛S HUSKIES (20-9-1, 4-1-1, 26-11-2, OHT35 #8)
NEW BRUNSWICK REDS (24-4-2, 4-1-1, 33-9-2, OHT35 #3)

Like the CW, and unlike the OUA, this is a best-of-three series and here‛s the schedule & results:
Sun Mar 5 Saint Mary's 2 New Brunswick 4
Tue Mar 7 New Brunswick 5 Saint Mary's 6 (ot)
Thu Mar 9 Saint Mary's at New Brunswick (7:00 PM AST/5:00 CST)
Of note, the SMUskies held a 3-2 edge over the Squirrels in the regular season, so this series going to the limit is not a shock.

OUT WEST
N.A.I.T. OOKS (10-7-7, 2-1, #5)
UA-AUGUSTANA VIKINGS (14-6-4, #2)
Fri Mar 10 N.A.I.T. at Augustana (7:00 MST/8:00 CST)
Sat Mar 11 Augustana at N.A.I.T. (6:00 MST/7:00 CST)
Sun Mar 12 N.A.I.T. at Augustana (6:00 MST/7:00 CST)*
I was hoping that the Ooks would lose to Briercrest last week, because it has been years since Briercrest won a playoff series. Although it was close, the Ooks are where they always are. It‛s not that long ago that they went unbeaten all season. In the last 9 seasons where playoffs were finished, NAIT has four championships and five runners-up. The Vikings last won a title in 2012.
CONCORDIA THUNDER (9-12-3, 2-1, #6)
RED DEER POLY KINGS (17-6-1, #1)
Fri Mar 10 Concordia-Edmonton at Red Deer Poly (8:00 MST/9:00 CST)
Sat Mar 11 Red Deer Poly at Concordia-Edmonton (7:00 MST/8:00 CST)
Sun Mar 12 Concordia-Edmonton at Red Deer Poly (4:30 MST/5:30 CST)*
Concordia racked up a mild upset by defeating SAIT. They last won a title in 2003 and lost the final in 2010 and 2022. Since re-entering the ACAC in 2013-14 Red Deer has not qualified for a final, but did win 11 championships between 1970 and 1994.
VICTORIA VIKINGS (11-8-1, #3)
VANCOUVER ISLAND MARINERS (13-6-1, #2)
Thu Mar 9 Victoria at Vancouver Island (7:15 PST/9:15 CST)
Sat Mar 11 Victoria at Vancouver Island (7:30 PST/9:30 CST)
Sun Mar 12 Victoria at Vancouver Island (7:15 PST/9:15 CST)*
The Mariners just started operations in 2017-18 but were runners-up in 2019 and 2022. Since the 2020 and 2021 playoffs were cancelled that represents a great deal of playoff success. The Vikings have four BCIHL titles, the most recent being in 2017. They also operated in the WCIAA from 1969-70 until 1972-73 (when it split in two, they went to the CW). In four years, three seasons were winless and in the other they went 3-17-0. (Total record: 3-75-0.)
OKANAGAN LAKERS (7-9-4, #4)
SIMON FRASER RED LEAFS (19-1-0, #1)
Fri Mar 10 Okanagan at Simon Fraser (7:00 PST/9:00 CST)
Sat Mar 11 Okanagan at Simon Fraser (3:45 PST/5:45 CST)
Sun Mar 12 Okanagan at Simon Fraser (7:00 PST/9:00 CST)*
The Lakers are in just their 2nd season. They finished 4th both times. Last year the league had a page playoff tournament. Okanagan beat Victoria in the quarter-final and lost to Vancouver Island in the semi-final, to finish 3rd. The Red Leafs (dumb name!) broke an 11-year drought by winning the title last year. They‛ve only lost one game in the last two years, albeit in a weaker league that lost Holy Trinity and Selkirk College, who combined for 6 of 7 championships before Covid cancelled two playoffs.

The CW is done, but the rest continue to battle on. Calgary and Alberta are patiently waiting for the U-Cup schedule to be announced. Four OUA teams are fighting over three U-Cup berths, the AUS final is all square, and the ACAC and BCIHL are down to four teams each.

CONCORDIA STINGERS (19-7-0, 3-1-1, 28-9-1, OHT35 #9)

This win for the Squirrels gives them the AUS title, to go along with a 1st place finish. This was a pretty decisive win. Especially in comparison to the battles in the CW and OUA.
Still, in the OHT35 they could be pipped for 2nd by UQTR. The SMUskies slide down to 11th, but are still ahead of U-Cup hosts UPEI. I usually don‛t add in playoffs. But this year I‛ll put out a new ranking after the OUA is finished. There are just two games left, the OUA gold and bronze games. Windsor is set for a big jump, but still will finish 5th or 6th, up from 10th a the start of the playoffs. As mentioned, UQTR could jump into 2nd, but they could also fall into 5th.
The U-Sports rankings may not use the OHT35 rankings for some reason. I expect the U-Cup rankings and draw to look like this:
If U.Q.T.R. wins:
#2 New Brunswick v #7 OUA Bronze
#3 U.Q.T.R. v #6 Saint Mary‛s
#1 Calgary v #8 U.P.E.I.
#4 Windsor v #5 Alberta
If Windsor wins:
#2 New Brunswick v #7 OUA Bronze
#3 Windsor v #6 Saint Mary‛s
#1 Calgary v #8 U.P.E.I.
#4 U.Q.T.R. v #5 Alberta
They will want the OUA bronze team to face UNB and Saint Mary‛s to face the OUA gold medal team.

This series started a day early. Friday is an off day and then it continues Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday. The odds are heavily in favour of a Simon Fraser v Vancouver Island rematch in the final. To their credit, Victoria was 10-5-0 in the new year after a shaky start.
