No NFL for me. The players are criminals and the owners are shysters. And the games are boring.

Quick Summary
Man: H. Ostir (17:26 3rd)
Calg: R. Stotts (04:00 1st), B. Schoonbaert (11:22 1st), N. King (15:20 1st), A. Atwal (14:23 2nd), S. Strange (15:07 3rd)
Goal: Man: Harkness (41 shots, 36 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (19 shots, 18 saves)

In the Town of Bedrock its yabba dabba doo time. This was their 20th consecutive win and assures them of 1st place. The last time they did so was 1997. (They lost to Alberta in the semi-final round two games to none that season.) Will Mr. Slate take the team out on the town for a celebration? If so, maybe the Bisons can steal the point they need for a playoff berth. The sad thing is that this was the closest game of the night in the CW.

Quick Summary

Sask: J. Ball (13:14 1st), C. Petruic (01:01 2nd), C. Hobbs (03:40 2nd), C. Petruic (16:46 2nd), A. Zawatsky (09:56 3rd), V. Loschiavo (18:38 3rd), R. Rhinehart (19:29 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (35 shots, 28 saves), Sask: Ross (14 shots, 12 saves)

Oddly, the Banjo-Cats scratched and clawed their way to a 2-0 lead. Then the Banjo-Mutts came back to dominate. In the 2nd period the Mutts started down by 2-1 and ended up by 4-2. In that same period, the Mutts outshot the Kittens 17-1. The teams head south for Saturday‛s rematch. Friday‛s results confine the Mutts to 5th place and a road-trip for the quarter-final round.

➤ MacU: Penalty parade costs Griffins in 7-0 loss to Cougars, but they remain just one point out of a playoff spot (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
MRU: C. Hanus (04:35 2nd), B. Stevenson (10:23 2nd), R. Sawchuk (10:55 2nd), B. Stevenson (13:08 2nd), N. Yaremko (04:39 3rd), A. Fyten (12:37 3rd), S. Moe (15:49 3rd)
Mac: none
Goal: MRU: Farkas (24 shots, 24 saves), Mac: Abel (51 shots, 44 saves)

The Bluegars easily dispatched of the Family Guys, led by Sawchuk‛s 20th goal and Yaremko‛s 14th goal. The stats don‛t look good for the rematch when the teams move south for the rematch. Although sitting in 4th, the Bluegars play on Saturday and the evil Monkeys and T-irds have the night off. Therefore a win would vault MRU into a tie for 2nd place.

➤ UofM: Hayden Ostir and Julia Arnold are Boston Pizza Athletes of the Week

Each side is involved in one of the two 3-way races on this final weekend of the regular season. The Evil Monkeys are in the race for 2-3-4 where they hold a 1-point lead over UBC and MRU. The Bisons are in the race for 6-7-8 where Regina and MacEwan are tied with a 2-point lead over the Bisons. Friday night‛s results left everything intact.

For the Bisons to be successful, they must win Saturday afternoon‛s rematch and both the the Banjo-Cats and Family Guys must lose in regulation. If my guess is correct, that would leave the Apes in 4th (if they lose in regulation) or 3rd (if they lose in overtime). A Monkey victory, however, assures them of 2nd and a bye to the semi-finals. Here are the tie-breaker rules:

If two or more teams are tied in points then the following tie breaking criteria shall be used to break the tie. A win in regulation time and a win in overtime are treated as equal. A loss in regulation time and a loss in overtime are treated as equal.

a. Two teams tied: The following shall determine the final league standings:
1. The best win/loss record in head to head games between the two teams.
2. If still tied, the number of wins in league play.
3. If still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

b. Three or more teams tied: If three or more teams are tied, the following steps shall be used to determine the rank order of the tied teams:
1. The best win/loss record in head to head games between the three or more tied teams.
2. If three or more teams are still tied, the highest number of wins in league play.
3. If three or more teams are still tied, the best goals for/goals against differential in league play.

Note: Once a team is ranked so that it is no longer tied with any other team(s) at any one of these three steps, that team shall be ranked accordingly in the final standings. Any remaining tied teams shall then proceed to step 1 of the appropriate tiebreaker (depending on the number of teams still tied) to continue the process until all teams are ranked in the final standings.

Hopefully they‛ll bring back the Timbits between periods feature on Saturday. They‛ve gotten away from that this year.

Here‛s how the game went.

Quick Summary
Alta: D. Lategan (14:54 1st), M. Fonteyne (08:07 2nd), M. Fonteyne (03:32 3rd), T. Preziuso (18:36 3rd)
Man: C. Hartje (19:27 2nd)
Goal: Alta: Kruger (19 shots, 18 saves), Man: Harkness (36 shots, 33 saves)

The Herd played a pretty solid game. They utilized the traditional blueprint to beat the Monkeys, i.e. hit them lots, and let them take a lot of shots from outside the slot area. The weakness was a powerplay that went 0-for-6 with few grade A chances.

At the end, they moved Hartje back to the blueline and condensed the forwards.

Since coach Mike Sirant is retiring at the end of the year, they had a pre-game ceremony for him. My expectation is that this will help the team next year. Not that I expect Barry Trotz to return to the campus, but the team is in dire need of some renewal.

This could be a preview of a quarter-final series. The Bluegars, Monkeys, and T-irds have to beware of the Banjo-Mutts ensconced in 5th place. The Bluegars would need help to jump out of 4th place.

Looking at these stats, it looks like Bedrock U is poised to hit 25 straight wins on Saturday. I see that Mac‛s #1 goaltender (Abel) was not dressed for this one. The Family Guys would lose a 2-way tie-breaker with Regina or a 3-way tie-breaker with Manitoba thrown in. So they need at least a point, and some help, on Saturday.

This game was actually tied well into the 2nd period. In the end, the T-irds racked up their 11th straight win. Right now, the Birds and Bisons need to form an alliance. If they both win, they get what they want (2nd for UBC, 6th for Manitoba).

The TSN Turning Point on Saturday occurred 14 minutes into the 2nd period when the Evil Monkeys were leading 3-2 and the Bisons appeared to have a shot. The Monkeys dumped the puck into the Bison zone and goaltender Simon Harkness came out to play it and tried to shoot it behind the net and around the glass. Instead he shot it IN his net, with nobody around, making the score 4-2. Not giving up, the Herd came out on the next shift and created mayhem in the Monkeys‛ zone, hitting a goalpost and a crossbar in the process. However, the next Ape shot was a low danger shot which trickled under Harkness to make it 5-2. Back-to-back unassisted goals, and that was all she wrote. The remainder of the game was simply playing out the string.

MacU: K. Gable (18:57 1st), M. Pasemko (18:19 2nd), J. Taupert (13:59 3rd)
Calg: A. Atwal (06:52 1st), J. Maser (08:19 1st), M. Westhaver (19:25 1st), C. Gengenbach (03:56 2nd), A. Atwal (05:33 2nd), N. King (08:34 3rd)
Goal: MacU: Davis (38 shots, 32 saves), Calg: Stankowski (19 shots, 16 saves)

This result gives Bedrock U a record 25 wins on the season, and their 23rd in a row. The Family Guys, however, miss the playoffs by virtue of a tie-breaker.

➤ UofR (Saturday): Cougars lose to UBC, but wind up with final Canada West postseason berth (with boxscore)
➤ UBC: ‘Birds close out season with a 12th straight win, will face Regina again in quarter-finals (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Reg: J. Fletcher (08:38 3rd)
UBC: J. Sandhu (12:54 1st), S. Huo (01:41 2nd), C. Douglas (05:12 2nd), J. Lee (17:07 2nd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (50 shots, 46 saves), UBC: Schwebius (26 shots, 25 saves)

It seems appropriate that the Banjo-Cats backed into the playoffs with two regulation losses. The three teams “fighting” for the final playoff berth went a combined 0-6-0 on the weekend. The T-irds cruised to a win in this game, and these teams will meet again next weekend in the quarter-finals.

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 35 ~ 2022-23 ~ POLL 18

The OUA East had big shifts. With Concordia moving up, UQTR also got a boost to the A category. McGill also came close to a boost to B. At the other end Moncton, Laurier, and Regina fell from C+ to C. There are just 6 teams in C+, which is usually the largest segment. The strange thing this year was the big gap in the CW. No teams at all in C+. Sask was #11, followed by #26 MacEwan.

* indicates total includes a tie game
Conf. indicates overall conference record
Conf-x indicates exhibition record within conference
USP-x indicates exhibition record within USports but outside conference
USP ∑ indicates regular season and exhibition record against USports teams
Other indicates record against non-USports teams
Total indicates record against all teams
AOA is the average of averages against each category of opponent.
~ Indicates results "smoothed" to reduce impact of categories with fewer games. The categories are merged and the value applied to both.

SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (14-10-4, 18-12-5, OHT35 #11)

Best-of-Three Series Schedule:

Sat Feb 18 Saskatchewan at Mount Royal (2:00 MST/3:00 CST)
Sun Feb 19 Saskatchewan at Mount Royal (2:00 MST/3:00 CST)*

Oddly enough, the Bluegars swept the Banjo-Mutts, 3-1 and 6-0 at home, and 3-2 and 8-1 last weekend in Saskatown. The Bluegars had late losses against MacEwan and Holy Trinity, which cost them a first round bye. The Bluegars outscored their opponents 119-65, and Sask barely edged their opponents 91-90. The Mutts have shown flashes of brilliance, so cannot be counted out.

REGINA COUGARS (8-17-3, 11-20-5, OHT35 #29)

Sat Feb 18 Regina at U.B.C. (7:00 PST/9:00 CST)
Sun Feb 19 Regina at U.B.C. (7:00 PST/9:00 CST)*

Although the Banjo-Cats were also swept by their opponents, they at least got a point for an OTL against the T-irds. At home, Regina lost 6-1 and 3-2 in OT. and on the coast last weekend they lost 6-3 and 4-1. UBC is riding a 12-game winning streak. Regina enters on a 1-6-1 skid. The stats over the last three years really favour UBC, however there was a time when these teams were fighting in the sub-.500 segment of the standings. A win for Regina would be the biggest surprise of the opening round.

U of C has won 23 in a row , UBC also on a 12 game tear.

My Bears are still second with 5 loses this year.

It's going to be interesting in the CW division

➤ MRU: Four Cougars named to Canada West Men's Hockey All-Star Teams
➤ YouTube: MRU Men's Hockey Hype Video | 2023 Playoffs

Quick Summary
Sask: C. Petruic (06:30 1st), V. Loschiavo (16:38 1st), T. Prefontaine (10:10 2nd), C. Hobbs (16:53 2nd), D. Holt (05:23 3rd)
MRU: C. Bouchard (15:58 1st), S. Moe (02:01 2nd), C. Bouchard (06:50 3rd)
Goal: Sask: Ross (27 shots, 24 saves), MRU: Farkas L (23 shots, 18 saves), Berry (10 shots, 10 saves)

The Banjo-Mutts played very well in this one, the kind of performance which surfaced several times throughout this season. (Although none of those were against the Bluegars.) MRU scored on a 3rd period penalty shot when trailing 5-2 to make the score more flattering. The Sawchuk/Yaremko duo were held off the scoreboard, which is a rarity.

Quick Summary
Reg: E. Houk (14:23 3rd)
UBC: S. Atkinson (02:28 1st), J. Kryski (08:47 1st), S. Mutala (06:08 2nd), S. Atkinson (14:18 2nd), L. Kindree (15:52 2nd), S. Atkinson (00:45 3rd), J. Wismer (08:07 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (42 shots, 35 saves), UBC: Lane (24 shots, 23 saves)

Scott Atkinson notched a hat-trick to lead the T-irds to a massive victory. He was 10-17-27 in 23 regular season games. I doubt that these Puddy-Tats scare these Tweety Birds, even without an umbrella-toting little old lady in the picture.

I also linked the CW all-star announcement. Here‛s the players:

Quick Summary
Sask: none
MRU:C. Bouchard (00:25 1st), J. Power (03:45 2nd), R. Sawchuk (08:50 2nd), J. Tarzwell (17:30 2nd)
Goal: Sask: Ross (28 shots, 24 saves), MRU: Farkas (17 shots, 17 saves)

This game was basically the inverse of Friday‛s opener. The Banjo-Mutts still managed to almost stifle the Bluegars‛ dynamic duo. (Sawchuk scored, Yaremko didn‛t.) Of course, the Bluegars stifled all of the Mutts. They seldom raised a fuss on offence. The winner of Sunday‛s matinee will face the Bedrock Dinos next weekend.

Quick Summary

UBC: C. Douglas (03:14 1st), J. Williams (05:58 1st), T. Rask (18:03 1st), L. Kindree (15:55 2nd), C. Douglas (01:15 3rd), J. Williams (07:07 3rd), S. Mutala (18:22 3rd)
Goal: Reg: Evanoff (32 shots, 25 saves), UBC: Schwebius (32 shots, 32 saves)

The lack of competitiveness of the bottom four teams was on full display in British California. The score may have been a bit misleading. After two periods, the Banjo-Cats outshot the T-irds 24-19 yet were trailing 4-0. In any event, a merciful end to the season for Regina. The T-irds are now off to Edmontown to face the Evil Monkeys next weekend.

After two games that were not really close, this one was even all the way. Actually, it looked like MRU was doing better in the 3rd, but that doesn‛t really matter. Too bad for the Bluegars. They are losing a lot of their best players next year, and this was their golden opportunity to be seen on a national basis.
