You are probably right about not making the deal, if for no other reason than it only makes sense if you resign yourself to the fact that Laughton is a bust. It doesn't hurt that the Flyers value players who throw the puck in the general direction of the net rather than on it. Hey, it still counts for Corsi! At least with JVR on the team, Ghost won't win the "What was he shooting at?" Derby anymore.
Notable: Grant S% = 18.5%, Laughton = 9.3%. But do we really care if they go IN the net? Of if we score more than the other guys? Apparently not! - hockeyal
how do you plan on getting a 2nd rd pick for a bust like laughton then? |

If they turn us down, I'd take a 7th. If Brandon Manning can get $2.25M/yr, anything is possible. People are even willing to sign bums like Zac Rinaldo! |

I'll make this as basic as I can. Do you think it is likely or unlikely that Grant can repeat that S% in future seasons?
He racked up that 18.5% in 66 games last season. In the previous 86 games in his NHL career, his S% was 0!
Laughton is not a bust. He is an NHL player with 190 games under his belt.
What I find hilarious and ironic is that you have such disdain for Gostisbehere then you make comments about caring if we score more than the other guys. Gostisbehere is one of the top offensive defenseman in the NHL. The hypocrisy does not surprise me. |

He will be 2 at the end of the month. We liked the idea of having two close together that were the same gender and got lucky with that
Btw @nutter the three point star is a guarantee for boy. 100% success rate, though the sample size is small. Two empty net goals |

Also, people talk about Laughton and the PK, but he didn't play much more than Grant (85 vs 53 min) but was on the ice for a lot more goals against. Of course, management thought Laughton would be a great replacement on the PK for PEB. Vegas was sure happy about that! - hockeyal
Serious question.
What is your criteria for a "bust"? Is it compared to other players taken after him in his draft? Is it compared to other #20 picks in other drafts?

I think we’re having a great summer! JvR was a signing I always thought we needed seeing how deep LW was in UFA but I also would have understood if Hextall didn’t try to landed a big name player.
I also really like the Folin signing. I assume Hextall is familiar. He’s right handed. Big. I look at the signing for what it is. We gave up Manning and we slightly upgraded. I think certain guys may need to be scratched at times (Gudas/Sanheim), so there is flexibility there. I don’t think anyone expected Myers to play this season but we definitely should see him this season, even for one or two games.
I’m Encouraged by this team again. I think by signing JvR and possibly signing Simmonds says that the core is gonna remain together for a few more years.
Its been four seasons since I’ve felt good about this team. Go Flyers! - SuperSchennBros
Good to hear you slipping back to team positive. It is way more fun with the "We can do it!" Attitude rather then the "now we are gonna suck a again" mentality.

"There really is no more than meets the eye right now to the Flyers' signing of defenseman Christian Folin to a one-year contract. They wanted a seventh defenseman with some NHL experience, preferably a righthanded player. That's why Folin was signed. He's righthanded and rounds up the top seven for now.
In and of itself, Folin's signing does not portend a trade involving Radko Gudas, nor does it significantly affect whether Phil Myers makes the team out of camp."
Exactly. Folin doesn't make the Flyers back 6 better at all. But I could see an instance where either Hagg is under-performing or Sanheim or Ghost need to be sat down when I would play Folin. At least he will try to go behind hos own net or to move someone from the crease, and do more than stand at the top of the faceoff circle and wait for others to defend.
If Laughton ends up being slotted as 3C or the team goes with their current top 6, it will be ugly. And once the season, Hexy will have to choose between giving up an asset or writing off the season to fix the obvious holes. - hockeyal
What's wrong with the current top six? Or are you suggesting that Laughts will need some support from the top six as to not be a disaster?

The guy has played almost 200 games in the big league. Laughton is not a bust by most people's definition. He is not that old either. Not even in his prime. People are quick to give up on players just because they don't jump into a big role right away. Morin and Laughton are two players that maybe playing a bigger role for the Flyers in the near future. |

Here’s a solid suggestion: Don’t respond to Hockeyal. Not sure I’ve seen a bigger Mr, Negative on this forum. One in a while we all throw something on the table that most don’t agree with. This guy’s throws everything negative! I wonder if this guy is just doing this to wind everyone up. Relax Al. No need to be the King of negativity. |

To be honest I think it is okay to have different positions on this board. Makes for a more well rounded discussion. Your right about him being very negative though. Must be hard to watch your favorite team and never believe they have a chance to win or feel anger to the coach and GM.
I think it is only an issue when people get personal on items and start flipping out. Some quotes from some posters are personal by nature like the still born post. That was a little off the board in my opinion. |

I don't have a problem with a negative post towards a player or the team if it's accurate. The problem is his opinions are obviously flawed. Just like the rest of team negative.

Nothing, if your goal is to be a middle of the pack team that can light the lamp enough to offset their weaknesses against weaker teams, or teams on the second half of a back-to-back, or just taking the night off. But if you care about winning games in May/June, they are not good enough. Maybe if you could get 30 minutes out of Provorov and AMac every night in the playoffs, but even Provorov can't handle that game after game. A team that made a quick exit, put up 7, 5, and 5 goals BEFORE Provorov was injured. That is how good the Flyers back six is. That is good enough to qualify for the playoffs. Is that all you expect? |
