Bill Meltzer: Quick Hits: Folin, Remaining UFAs, Charity Classic and More - bmeltzer
I think we’re having a great summer! JvR was a signing I always thought we needed seeing how deep LW was in UFA but I also would have understood if Hextall didn’t try to landed a big name player.
I also really like the Folin signing. I assume Hextall is familiar. He’s right handed. Big. I look at the signing for what it is. We gave up Manning and we slightly upgraded. I think certain guys may need to be scratched at times (Gudas/Sanheim), so there is flexibility there. I don’t think anyone expected Myers to play this season but we definitely should see him this season, even for one or two games.
I’m Encouraged by this team again. I think by signing JvR and possibly signing Simmonds says that the core is gonna remain together for a few more years.
Its been four seasons since I’ve felt good about this team. Go Flyers! |

They tried to give it to him last year we saw how that turned out. Unless he’s suddenly able to develop a vision for the ice he’ll slot in on the 4th line - Just5
Laughton wasn’t given a genuine chance at 3C last year. Look at his ice time and wingers compared to Filppula’s.
For a really good laugh, look at how Voracek did with and without Filppula’s veteran vision. |

Actually Raffl is a top 9 forward for this team, and useful on the PK. He is one of the few wings who can actually play defense. They need him! |

but hak has no offensive vision and plays a boring defensive system and JVR hates defense |

Totally wrong .He played 8 different forward positions on the team and is in a contract year 2018/19.He is needed as joker and best defensive winger

"There really is no more than meets the eye right now to the Flyers' signing of defenseman Christian Folin to a one-year contract. They wanted a seventh defenseman with some NHL experience, preferably a righthanded player. That's why Folin was signed. He's righthanded and rounds up the top seven for now.
In and of itself, Folin's signing does not portend a trade involving Radko Gudas, nor does it significantly affect whether Phil Myers makes the team out of camp."
Exactly. Folin doesn't make the Flyers back 6 better at all. But I could see an instance where either Hagg is under-performing or Sanheim or Ghost need to be sat down when I would play Folin. At least he will try to go behind hos own net or to move someone from the crease, and do more than stand at the top of the faceoff circle and wait for others to defend.
If Laughton ends up being slotted as 3C or the team goes with their current top 6, it will be ugly. And once the season, Hexy will have to choose between giving up an asset or writing off the season to fix the obvious holes. |

Maybe was also against Manning leaving but Folin is a D-Man with a right handed
shot.Absolutely needed on this team as Gudas did a very average season

The signing was exactly what we needed and a guy that can fill in but won't take a spot from a kid. And we saw what manning got on the market no chance we were going to match that. I'm just saying people are over stating the player folin is. He is not a gudas replacement. He is not a top 6. He is a 7th man hence the contract he got. |

Exactly. He was signed to be the 7/8 guy on the depth chart. And when the coach sits you to play THAT GUY, it sends a message. Hope it happens early and often.

"As a result, the 33-year-old is still on the open market. I don't think the Flyers will sign him and would, instead, rather give Scott Laughton a crack at moving up to the third-line center role. Nevertheless, the longer Letestu remains unsigned, the more likely he become a one-year bargain for a team looking for a versatile veteran role player."
Instead of Letestu, who wouldn't really make the team better and would command more money, why not sign Derek Grant to be your new 4C and PK specialist. He had better stats than Laughton (24 points, +3, 53.3% FOW) and was an integral part of one of the league's best PKs. Sign him and trade Laughton for a 2nd round pick. If it works, package Morin with him and make it a 1st rounder. |

Yeah, I can't see him being worth more than say a 4th at the very best. He's supposed to be a scoring forward but he doesn't generate much offense.
The thought of him trying to play center at the NHL level makes me shudder. - hereticpride
I think different. I think Weal is a good player for generating offense. I see great potential in Weal. For instints Weal took over for an injury that occured during the season for a month and cashed in 11 points. That was preety much his only ice time except Weise being benched for a couple games and weal went to work! Weal can an amazing contributor to our team. |

Derek Grant was 9th in SH TOI/PG among Anaheim forwards last season.
Flyers won't make your suggested deal. Hextall is not incompetent. |

You are probably right about not making the deal, if for no other reason than it only makes sense if you resign yourself to the fact that Laughton is a bust. It doesn't hurt that the Flyers value players who throw the puck in the general direction of the net rather than on it. Hey, it still counts for Corsi! At least with JVR on the team, Ghost won't win the "What was he shooting at?" Derby anymore.
Notable: Grant S% = 18.5%, Laughton = 9.3%. But do we really care if they go IN the net? Of if we score more than the other guys? Apparently not!
Also, people talk about Laughton and the PK, but he didn't play much more than Grant (85 vs 53 min) but was on the ice for a lot more goals against. Of course, management thought Laughton would be a great replacement on the PK for PEB. Vegas was sure happy about that! |
