It's not about the 9 players that is the problem with Tampa, it's about Point. Sergachev and Vasi all needing big extensions right away with all of that.

The Leafs won't have that, they'll have the core locked up and simply have to move on with low cost everywhere else.

Tampa would have to make major moves at a disadvantage to keep those 3, which they absolutely must IMO.

based on his last 2-3 seasons and the fact that Gardiner is already a 50 point defenseman on the Leafs, Karlsson isnt worth either of those deals

Also, I wouldn't trade Reilly for Karlsson up straight, given Toronto needs shut down Dmen, not an upgraded Jake Gardiner.

Karlsson is an upgraded Gardiner that has won 2 Norris trophies been nominated twice more and a been a first team all star 5 times.

Basically if Jake Gardiner was the top Dman of his generation, Karlsson would be Jake Gardiner.

Tampa would have to hope their newer prospects can replace those guys looking for raises and trade them for picks/other prospects. To be honest, I'd rather be in this situation with the cap and being competitive than be in the basement and still dealing with cap problems like the Oilers.

This hands down. Seriously when will these (frank)s get it into their thick neanderthal skulls that not everything in hcokey has to do with Toronto. Any (frank)ing team that has the assets to acquire Karlsson would make a deal to get him... get off your (frank)ing high horses.

Seriously. If Toronto really was the center of the universe MiB would be raking in the dough with angles of the other 30 teams and how their moves all center around the TML.

Here's how this could happen (although I am far from convinced that it will) :

Salary cap concerns - If Yzerman was in on Tavares, then obviously he had a plan of action in place to fit in Tavares' contract. A Karlsson contract wouldn't be too different from a Karlsson contract in terms of caphit or term. So, how does Yzerman the warlock make it happen?

Buy out Callahan.

Trade Killorn or Johnson.

Sergachev goes to Ottawa as part of the deal - there goes any worry about his next contract.

It's not that outlandish. Vinik has shown he will spend to the max to win, and Yzerman is adept at using his Jedi Mind Tricks to glamour other GM's.

From this Tampa fan's perspective, I'd rather Karlsson go out west somewhere - maybe Dallas or San Jose or Vegas. Karlsson is great, but he has peaked and will likely never put up Norris numbers again while skating on a surgically-altered ankle that is missing a bone. Karlsson himself said his skating has lost a touch. If the cost to acquire Karlsson is Sergachev or Point, I would decline the trade if I was Yzerman. I honestly don't think Karlsson is worth north of $10 or $11 million per season. A few years ago, yes. Now? No.

They mostly just give it to the guy with the most points, not the actual best defenseman. So there's a very good chance that he'll be nominated again.

Oh I'm totally with you, and I agree it's not as if Tampa is screwed. The biggest problem is unless they want to get hosed on giving away Palat, Paquette and Johnson (or trying to 'give away' Callahan), Raddysh, Cirelli and Foote might all have to go as well.

It's a real tough position to put yourself in just to add one more player, even with how good he is.

If Tampa has to give up anything like Sergachev, or not resign someone next season, they will be weaker overall.
