I love how Tampa has to give up bit pieces and picks to get Karlsson but the Leafs gotta give up Nylander + to get a different, "lesser" defenseman. |

Nope. Matthews > Ekblad. Not even close. - Steven_Seagull
There's not a lot of defensemen in hockey I'd take over Ekblad, but I agree.
Matthews > Ekblad. |

MB and Dorion starting to overtake Chia and may rival Milbury soon. - RafiDRW
Dorion gets a slight pass because of Melnyk. I'm confident Melnyk is tying Dorions hands on trades. |

That's how everything works with the Leafs. Have to overpay to make stars come here. Edmonton of the East! |

Steve Y panicking.
Has one year left before he has to let go one of his core players, and tries to push Tampa all-in for at least 1 season.
Even if Tampa adds Karlsson without giving up Kucherov / Point, Leafs are still superior team. Just too much quality Matthews-Marner-Tavares-Nylander-Kadri and comrades. - plantheparade
Well.
I wouldnt say superior. Equal. |

Had boy genius Kyle Dubas not gone after Tavares, Toronto might have been able to make a play for what the Leafs really need - a stud defenceman like Erik Karlsson.
Instead it looks like he’s going to a division rival.

I agree. They definitely should have just said no to Tavares. Straight up refuse to sign him, pull themselves out of the running. If Johnny persists, you just need to say "no" more firmly. Kinda like 'NO! John.....no' while maintaining eye contact. That would make sense I think.

Even with Tavares, I don't believe the Leafs have the depth to compete with the Lightning. The Leafs have a good team but Tampa's depth at all positions will make it hard for the Leafs to move past round 2. - Bolts91
You are surely entitled you your opinion. In my opinion, even though Yzerman has done a remarkable job with underpaying star players such as Stamkos and Hedman, there remain challenges, including making Kucherov happy. Incidentally Kucherov scored one more point than Marner in his first two full seasons (in more games) and Marner is probably the third best forward on the Leafs. There appears to be a great deal of filler (may contain cereal or soy by-products) type players on the Lightning roster.
For example Ryan Callahan would have been dumped or purged from the Leafs lineup a couple of years ago - when underperforming/talentless/overpaid types were moved from the lineup. He would never make this Leafs team, even as a fourth liner and he makes $5.8 m a year with Tampa for 18 points last season. Leafs are improved with JT and if they remain healthy will improve on the 105 points they had last season. In the playoffs, we'll see, my hope and expectation is that they will wipe their ass with the Lightning.

And Sundin didn’t want to join a team mid-season, and Tavares wanted to resign with the Islanders.
Leafs can offer Markov a chance at the cup and a f*** you right back to Bergevin. - Feeling Glucky?
He didn't want to join another team mid-season. He tried to come back to the Leafs but Burke said no. |

This one was good
Though a little bit presumptuous on the price for Klolrlsson - TheMussel
that and they still have to sign Nylander with the 16mil
But I dont see how you get Karlsson without it costing Nylander or Marner.
and Tavares + Nylander is better than Karlsson from a pure wins/points perspective

Leafs have money, $650K is a good minor league salary. At least symba has a boner.
