Well that's a relief!

The issue is that the Leafs probably have the weakest group of defensemen in the east after Montreal and the Islanders. That group may not even get you to the playoffs. If Dubas is intent on seeing where it goes with this group, I think it'll be a big mistake.

I don't believe the forward group is close either. Kucherov is the best hockey player in the world. Their depth runs 4 lines deep. Our 3rd and 4th line would be some team's first or second line.

People love to discount +/- but the fact is Karlsson has been on the ice for more even strength goals against than for. When I looked last year, he was the ONLY top 20 defenseman you could say that about.

Despite what the advanced stats people want to claim, he didn't get all those minuses just as he was skating off the ice on a line change and he wasn't in on every + play either.

That stat also fully agrees with the eye test that suggests Karlsson looks a lot like Gardiner in his own end.
