Can't we all just agree Matthews and Ekblad are both great players any team would be lucky to have?

I think this whole thing started due to some weird proposal of Matthews for Barkov and Ekblad that UG laughed at. I mean, as great as Matthews is, that would still probably be an over-payment by Florida. As awesome as Matthews is, those others are also great young players.

They definitely are, even if they have different styles, positions and roles.

It's debatable but Ekblad is 6'4, 218, RHD, plays PK, plays PP, scores goals from the blueline, plays 20+ min a night, 1st overall, OHL exceptional player, total stud defender.

Considering the Leafs have Tavares, Nylander, Marner and Kadri who can all play center, I wouldn't be that upset if they traded Matthews for Ekblad.

- Unholy_Goalie

Great points! ..and yes definitely debatable! ..I personally value an elite center over an elite defenseman. .but you are correct in that would be our strongest position at the moment. .but Matthews at this time is untouchable IMHO. .but Ekblad played amazing with Reilly! ..2 1sts..Nylander Lilly.. and Gardiner. .plus HoHo's hat? ..to Florida

Very intersting read on the Athletic

If the Leafs use Hortons LTIR all season long, the rookie bonus from this year goes to next year as well.

Dubas still wants to make moves, but with those moves he may need to unload a bit of salary along with it....

Also said Leafs have interest in Maroon

It had to be said. You got to at least admire the gulls it took to say it.

Dudes.

It's June 2016 again.

But this time Ekblad is also in the draft.

Who do you pick?

And no, Laine is not the right answer...but I guess it could be.

I gotta think Ekblad becomes the favourite, but in saying that, Leafs needed a center and a number 1 D let alone a righty.

The "sort of worry" here should Tampa acquire Erik Karlsson, as being their counter move to reduce the magnitude of the Leafs' signing of Tavares last weekend, would not have likely existed had the Leafs been in heavy at last season's trade deadline, and acquired McDonagh, instead of Tampa doing so, and having just also extended his contract.
Had the Leafs acquired McDonagh, despite Matthews struggles, they would have beaten the Bruins with their shaky Rask in goal that series, instead of losing in a Game 7. But of most importance, McDonagh would not be part of what will be considered the top 4 back line crew in the game, if Karlsson is traded to Tampa through some cap maneuvering, with likely a third team being involved in that possible deal.

Yup.

But one thing I'm confident in is that we'll always be in good shape cap-wise. Still an interesting article.

Pass on Maroon. Not sure I want to play him ahead of Johnsson and he's not going to want to play on the 4th line.

I'd rather we signed a center to play on the wing on the 4th line. Can't have too many centers (TB good example).
