Dubas has submitted a formal request to be moved to the Metro. - Woderwick
Yzerman isn't stupid. He played his whole career with Lidstrom and now he has the two best Swedish defensemen since Lidstrom on his team. That's no accident. He knows what wins Cups.
This should make Dubas change his tune about keeping Nylander and leaving the defense the same because the Tampa Bay Lightning's D, by itself, is terrifying. They have THREE number 1 defensemen if they get Karlsson plus Vasilevskiy behind them and two of the highest scoring forwards in front of them. The starting line-up looks like a (frank)ing All-Star team. Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman, Karlsson and Vasilevskiy. Insane. |

What are your thoughts on Berggren? - Arctic_AARDVARK
Hella hands with some quick feet. Has really good vision but needs to work on some polishing for his plays. Good hockey thinkingz but could be quicker on the decision to pass or not, which has been getting better by all accounts. Undersized. Could see him projecting as a Tatar/Nyquist with better skating and a Abdelkader crash and bang style if he grows up a bit physically and continues to use his body to create possession. |

If he did play that way...Leafs would have probably tried harder to keep him. |

I’m just proud that I spent time lo King into Berggren before the draft. I wanted the Wings to get him and they did. only a few spots behind the super sneaky pick of Veleno. |

If he played that way, he'd probably be one of the best power forwards in the league. But his first run with the Flyers he was pretty fragile so maybe he didn't play that way to maintain his long term health. That being said, he's built like a bag of milk. Still, a shame when one of the biggest players on the team plays like one of the smallest, especially in the playoffs. |

The Leafs don't think keeping Nylander and improving the D are mutually exclusive. |

Well Doughty re-signed, Karlsson is getting traded to Tampa Bay and there's no way he's not getting re-signed there so how exactly are the Leafs going to magically get better on D without making a trade?
Could the prospects in the system develop into good defenders? Yes, that's possible but they don't exactly have anybody that's suppose to become a top-pairing defender either so that's another long shot.
They could rip off another team but that's pretty rare and hard to bank on.
The solution is to trade something of value to get something of value in return and that means moving Nylander. Should they do it now? Definitely not because Nylander's value will probably go up after playing with Tavares but at some point, it's going to have to happen not only to save the cap space but to get a good return on the blueline. |

Why does it have to be Nylander? If you really want a true elite D that means Marner has to go. No one's gonna trade a true 1D for Nylander. You gotta give to get. If you really want balance on the team that's the risky call that has to be made. Thinking Nylander gets it done is some wishful thinking Leafs goggles tunnel vision. |

Nylander plus whatever else it takes; Kapanen, Liljegren, Sandin, 1st round pick.
Marner is untouchable. |
