If Zaitsev progresses from 2016 instead of regressing as he did last year (very much hoping it was injury related), then you have Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev, Dermott, Hainsey, and maybe Carrick/Holl/Ozhiganov as other options. Rosen and Borgman are both lefties.

I know literally nothing about Ozhiganov, but I did like Holl and Rosen in the Calder Cup. But none of these guys appear to be a defensive defenseman.

Regardless, without Leo, JVR and Bozak, they are better defensively from the front end, and they can improve from within *if* Zaitsev improves.

Not as much as if they land an established top-4 guy, but as these threads (and empirical evidence) show, the price may not be worth the return.

So Sorry Symba. Willie and his hair are here for the long haul. Management is scrounging their Canadian Tire money to get even better. East of Leaf Nation, there are two teams that are looking at Canadian Tire Fire.

We are talking about a top 3 defenseman who is literally in his prime. Don't even bring up his ankles, everyone gets injured.


Bracco is a huge wildcard.
Kapanen may just be a second line winger.
Sandin may be a top 4 in 3-5 years.
Gardiner has value and so does Zaitsev but that's because they're proven, and, necessary in a Dorion trade because the Sens want to be competitive next year considering the 1st is with Colorado.

It seems like a lot but two late 1sts and a 2021 3rd/2nd is not that big of a deal.if you guys don't make the SCF in two seasons it's 2019 1st, 2020 2nd and 2021 3rd plus a lot of moving parts and darts thrown at the dartboard.
If Dorion/scouting is able to do anything with late 1st and 2nd that would be great but it certainly isn't a top 10 draft pick +++++++.

Karlsson has a lot of value, especially at 10M/AAV for 8 years.

Im hoping Mitchy takes a bit less to stay with the team ala JT. You figure Mathews is gonna be at least 11. He is still no McDavid. But I dunno I get this weird sense that while he is appreciative and respectful and all, he isnt all that thrilled he is playing for a Canadian team..of course I dont have much to base this on other than certain manerisms I guess.

I also think Willie is the sacrafice to get some help on the backend...which would suck since we drafted and developed him, ya know what winning teams in the past have done.
