McSavalot kinda' sucked at the Worlds. I certainly had zero confidence in him during that tournament...granted a different team.

He had a career year this year and is unlikely to do it again next year. I think there's a good reason Babcock didn't start him more often and it's because McElhinney is and always has been a mediocre back-up. I don't have much confidence in him either, especially if Andersen got hurt for a significant period of time.

If they can sign Lehtonen (who is now plan D or E), for 1 year, they should do it. He's not durable and he can't be a starter but he's always had talent, he's a big body and he's much more proven than anybody else the Leafs currently have. If nothing else, he's trying to extend his career and should be motivated to perform to earn his next contract.

It's either you sign him for free now (same theory as with signing Vermette as the 4C right now) or you overpay for one when you need one at the deadline. The Leafs have a lot of space, they can afford to use it on 1 year deals to shore up the holes.

Still better than McElhinney's career average, especially if the back-up is to be expected to play 25-30 games, which the back-up should be able to do.

Yeah, it gave me the feels.

I might've complained about him when he was placed in a role he wasn't suited for or for being poopty defensively, but there's certainly nothing to complain about his character as a person or his joy at being a Leaf.

I think one of the most poignant things I've seen in hockey is that clip where he's at the glass and his wife is holding his child there with a #42 DADDY jersey on and he's smiling at them. Guy was happy to be on the team and certainly tried his best.

I wish him and JVR success and happiness where ever they go.
