Leafs cap situation right now is more than ideal. There's literally no dead weight. The only iffy contract is Zaitsev and even then he's still young enough that for the next 2 years or so there's room for improvement while the cap rises and his hit becomes more manageable(I'm optimistic).

As for now I'd really just roll with what we've got. Defence isn't as big of a deal as others are making it out to be aside from perhaps replacing Polak. We'll score enough goals that as long as Freddy doesn't play more than 55 games we'll be fine.

I would be okay starting the season with the team they currently have but I think Gardiners value will never be higher coming off his last season with his current cap hit.

he's just a guy, there is nothing special about him. just an average defenseman. 3.8 million per is 1.8 million to much. if the leafs replace gardiner with him on their defense, they lose gardiner's offense and trade it for a guy who is ok at everything.

no, if you do that you replace a burgeoning elite offensive defenseman with trash that you're gonna pay almost 4 mil a season and then wonder why you don't have the cap space to sign all your young talent.
