No reason to do a sign and trade. You can trade and then still offer him 8 years, right? As long as he is your property and the contract is not over, you can offer 8 years, I think.

Yea offering less than Doughty and Doughty is on a playoff caliber team. If you are paying a guy to play on your team through a rebuild, it has to be much much more.

Honestly if it were actually possible you'd most likely need to trade maybe Guhle/Risto, Nylander/Reinhart and a 1st? He is going to get paid at least 11 mil so time to like GMJB work on those cap numbers

Teams have the cap room for both, but taking on Ryan is a bad bad contract. Also, said team would have to want to trade a whole mess load of assets to make it happen. So that is a lot to ask.

Here take this $7.25 cap hit for 4 more years and then pay Karlsson like $12.5m per (so $20 per year) and trade us 2 first round picks and 1-2 top prospects. Sure. No problem.

I hear Vegas is top of the list right now, but it worries me that this type of move would actually set them back.

Then how does Ottawa get anywhere near the cap floor? $58.8 They are at $60.8 right now and if they trade both those guys, $13.75 so they would need $11.75 roughly to make the floor. OK it might be possible with what they get back and signing a couple guys (namely Mark Stone).

So all these "experts" or "Insiders" that said the hold up on Tavares may have been a trade of his rights, would have made no sense. What would Toronto have gained by doing that? Silly. Only a sign and trade would allow them to get 8 years at the point, but that was not what they were saying.

We'd have to swap Okposo for Ryan, we'd probably have to lose Reinhart for cap purposes, and throw in Guhle and a pick.

So a reasonable, workable deal would be Karlsson and Ryan for Reinhart, Okposo, Guhle and a 2nd?

Or Karlsson, Ryan for Okpso, Bogo, Guhle and a 1st, 2nd and 5th

I corrected both on twitter and then had to argue the rules with people that said I was wrong even after I quoted the CBA verbatim
